What I Need to Know?

Our natural environment provides us with the essential services

that we need for life, including air, water, and food. Any deterioration
in the quality of these elements can give an impact on our health and
quality of life, and ultimately on our life expectancy. Nowadays, we
are generally living longer than ever before, but environmental
pollution continues to be one of the critical factors that impact both
our life expectancy and our general health and wellbeing.
Whilst the impact on our life expectancy is significant,
environmental pollution also reduces our quality of life, as living with
illnesses such as cancers and heart disease impact on our
wellbeing.
Apart from the direct influences of pollution on health, such as from air and water
pollution, other elements of our environment also play an important role in supporting
our health and wellbeing.
At your level, being Senior High School students, this module will help you in
showing how to care for the environment which will contribute to your health, well-
being, and sustainable development. This module will discuss the:
1. importance of caring for the environment; and
2. how to care for the environment which contributes to health, well-being,
and sustainable development?

Objectives

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

Show that care for the environment contributes to health, well-being and
sustainable development. PPT11/12-Ii-4.2

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1. discuss the various ways on how to care the environment that contributes
to health, well-being and sustainable development;
2. recognize clearly the importance of caring for the environment; and
3. illustrate the different ways on how to protect the environment through
writing a poem and collage making.

Since you already knew our target for this module, are you ready to learn
more? Hope that you will enjoy all the activities and reading materials we prepare for
you. Good luck and enjoy it while learning!

ENVIRONMENTAL THEORIES

Deep Ecology is an ecological philosophy developed by

Arne Naess in the 1970s. According to him, we must
respect and give high regards to our environment. It is
an environmental philosophy promoting the inherent
worth of living beings regardless of their instrumental
utility to human needs, plus a restructuring of modern
Arne Næss human societies following such ideas. It argues that

the natural world is a subtle balance of complex inter-
3%A6ss,_2003_(cropped).jpg. relationships in which the existence of organisms is
dependent on the existence of others within ecosystems.

Social Ecology is a critical social theory founded by

American anarchist and libertarian socialist author
Murray Bookchin. Also an environmental philosophical
theory about the relationship between ecological and
social issues.

Ecofeminism is also

6
These theories value the care, conservation, preservation of nature, and humanity.
Your search for the meaning of life must explore not just our survival but calls for a
new socio-ecological order. Erich Fromm believes that it is about time that humanity
ought to recognize n ot o nl y it s elf but t h e w or ld ar ou nd it . F or F r omm, a s
hum a n b ei ng s , o ur b io l og ic al urg e f o r survival turns into selfishness and
laziness. Fromm argues that as humans, it is also inherent in us to escape the prison
cell of selfishness.

Why should we care about the environment?

First and foremost, a clean environment is vital not only to our healthy living but the
survival of all living things. The air we breathe is the most essential resource that the
environment provides us with, and our efforts to reduce air pollution are currently not
even pacing the pollution being pumped into the air daily (especially in major cities).
According to the EPA, air pollution may increase the risk of heart attacks, asthma,
bronchitis, and premature mortality. There is also evidence to suggest that most
indoor air can be up to five times more toxic than it is outdoors. But air pollution is
not the only type of pollution we should be concerned with. The CDC also warns that
water pollution may increase risks of gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems,
and neurological disorders. When you think of the environment as something that
may be hurting us if we don’t take care of it, the need for a resolution becomes much
clearer.

How to take care of the environment

The importance of caring for the environment is paramount for many reasons.
Perhaps most importantly, we need to make sure that we leave this place better than
when we came for the next generations whose job(s) will be to also look after the
planet. It wouldn’t be fair to hand them something we fouled up that they are
responsible for cleaning up. With that in mind, here are a few ways to take care of
our environment:
• Turn off the lights when they are not in use. This one is too easy but is one of
the more commonly overlooked ways to reduce energy consumption.
• Reusable water bottles. Fossil fuels are required to make plastic bottles, so
using fewer plastic bottles will help greatly in preserving this precious
resource.
• Recycling is one of the most popular and most impactful ways that you can
help the environment.
• Repurposing the so many things around your home like the plastic bags can
be reused at the grocery store or used as small wastebasket bags.
• Choose natural soaps, shampoos, body washes, and laundry detergents to
help keep our natural water supply clean.

MY COLLAGE

10
What I Have Learned?

TAKE NOTE:
➢ As Christians, we must be environmentally concerned. In order to do that, we
must understand our responsibility and comprehend the original relationship
between man and nature.
➢ Genesis 1:26-28 tells us that God created man and woman in His image and
gave them dominion over all the Earth. This included all the animals that God
had created as well as the entire Earth. God also charged their descendants
with the care for all the Earth (Gen. 1:28).
➢ Although Scriptures are in general agreement with many of the ecology
groups that man is responsible for his environment, Christians may disagree
with them on the question of why the environment is important and how it
should be maintained.
➢ Perhaps one reason that we are commanded to care for the Earth is as an
illustration of responsibility and stewardship. God placed man over the Earth
as the crown of His creation. We are to show care, compassion and
responsibility in our relationship with creation. In this way, we can appreciate
better the special relationship which God has established with man, who was
created in His own image. As believers we will show good stewardship by
accepting the responsibility that was given in the beginning.
➢ Man must learn that our responsibility to the Earth is less important than our
caring for each other.
➢ Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs. It contains within it two key concepts:
• the concept of “needs”, in particular the essential needs of the world’s
poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
• the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social
organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future
needs.
➢ The following environmental theories which have great impact to caring the
environment are: Deep Ecology which promotes the inherent worth of living
being regardless of their instrumental utility to human needs. Next is Social
Ecology which tells that destroying nature is a reflection wherein few people
overpower others while exploiting the environment for profit or self-interest.
Lastly, Cofeminism which argues that ecological crisis is a consequence of
male dominance.

11
➢ We need to take care of the environment for so many reasons and we have to
make this place a better place to live in for the next generations. We should
be responsible to our environment as stewards of creation.
➢ Here are simple ways to take care of our environment;
1. Turn off the lights whenever they are not in use.
2. Reuse water bottle.
3. Recycling
4. Repurposing
5. Avoid using detergents
