Water geochemistry

Geochemical analysis of water samples

• Molarity
• It is the concentration of the solution and defined as the
amount of constituent (mol) in a volume of solution (m3)
• Units : mol/m3
• Molality
• It is the amount of constituent (mol) divide by the mass of
the solvent (not the solution) (kg)
• Units : mol/kg
Water geochemistry
• Combining weight
• The atomic or formula weight of an element, compound or in an ion
divide by its valence
Eg: Na+ =22.991/1= 22.991
Ca 2+ = 40.08/2 = 20.04

• Milliequivalent weight
• Concentration (mg/ l) divides by the combining weight
Eg: 35mg/l of Na concentration
=35(mg/l)/22.991
= 1.52meq/l
Water geochemistry
Piper diagram (trilinear diagram)
• A graphical representation of geochemical data of an analysis (major
elements).
• It represents the major cations and anions in separate ternary plots and then
they projected into a one diamond shape graph
• The apexes of the cations are
• Calcium
• magnesium
• sodium plus potassium
• The apexes of the anions are
• Sulphate
• chloride
• carbonates plus hydrogen carbonates
