– In three dimensions each node on a frame can have at most three 
linear displacements & three rotational displacements.

– In two dimension each node can have at most two linear 
displacements & one rotational displacement.

• Steps to analyzing beams using this method
– Fined the fixed end moments of each span (both ends left & right)
– Apply the slope deflection equation on each span & identify the unknowns 
– Write down the joint equilibrium equations

– Solve the equilibrium equations to get the unknown rotation & deflections
– Determine the end moments and then treat each span as simply supported beam 
subjected to given load & end moments so you can workout the reactions & draw
