1.0 INTRODUCTION

The term School Resource Centre or SRCs emerged in Malaysian education

since 1st May 1983 when the Ministry of Education directed all schools to use this term
instead of school library. The directive was issued to signify the variety of SRC’s
collection which not only limited to printed materials but also other formats including audio
visual collection.

SRCs in Malaysia provide information and ideas that are fundamental to function
successfully in today’s information and knowledge-based society. The SRCs equip
students with information literacy skills and help them develop life-long learning habits,
enabling them to be knowledgeable and responsible citizens.

SRCs aim to provide a range of learning opportunities for both large and small
groups as well as individuals with a focus on intellectual content, information literacy, and
the learner. In addition to classroom visits with collaborating teachers, the SRCs also
serve as a place for students to do independent work, use computers, audio-visual
equipment and research materials; and also to hold special events such as thematic
exhibitions and reading club activities.

The SRCs programme is a collaborative venture in which the teacher-librarians,

teachers, and administrators work together to provide opportunities for the social, cultural,
and educational growth of students. Activities that are part of the school library media
program can take place in the school library media center, and other SRCs’ linked
facilities such as the audio-visual room, computer laboratory, and Access Centre and
other special rooms set up by the schools.
2.0 BACKGROUND OF ACTIVITIES

There are a few activities librarians and teachers can use to engage students
and start them on the path to being lifelong readers.

SMK Muara Tuang always helds Libary Scavenger Hunt yearly. This activty is a
great way to assess the students’ knowledge of the order of the library while having fun at
the same time. The librarians, with the helps of the students will prepare a checklist for
each of the students with items that they must find in the library within a given time. The
questions cab be tailored to fit the age and proficiency level of the students. For example,
questions might include the following: “Name a book written by Judy Blume”, “How many
librarians are in SMK Muara Tuang?” or “What are the names of the librarians?” The
winners will be awarded with amazing and surprise prizes.
3.0 BENEFITS OF USING SCHOOL RESOURCE CENTRE (SRC)

The school library provides information and ideas that are fundamental to
functioning successfully in today’s information and knowledge-based society. Not only
that, the school library also equips students with life-long learning skills and develops the
imagination, enabling them to live as responsible citizens. There are many benefits when
using School Resource Centre (SRC).

First of all, the benefits of using SRC is libraries offer more than books. Today,
technology of every kind is found at the library such as e-books, audio books, DVDs,
CDs, and reference materials such as atlases, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and
almanacs. Libraries are a place of relaxation, learning, and discovery. There are
cosy, quiet nooks and crannies to read. Students find it's a quiet place to do
homework rather than a noisy home. Another one of the many benefits of going to
the library is leaving less stressed-out and it can be a great place to make friends.
It is a relaxing, reading environment with much more to offer than books.
Next, the benefits of using SRC is librarians are trained to help. Students can
reserve books, or save the information needed from their laptop at home and just
swing by the library to pick up the items. The librarians will have the items
ready. Librarians love reading and will help the students to pick out the right
reading level and genre for them. Librarians are professionally trained to help
students to find what they are looking for at the library. They will point in the right
direction, answer questions, or help students find a book that will enjoy them. Not
only that, the librarian also teaches student how to carry out research. Many
students do not know how to research using written material which makes university
hard. Many school librarians teach students how to do research. So, the students do
not have to worry because they always have library helpers that help to assist with
anything in the library.
In a nutshell, SRC provide information and ideas that are fundamental to
function successfully in today’s information and knowledge-based society. The SRC
equip students with information literacy skills and help them develop life-long
learning habits, enabling them to be knowledgeable and responsible citizens.
4.0 RECOMMENDATION

Most high school students do not see the library as a cool place to be. Whether or
not the librarian and teacher can change that by planning some entertaining and
enriching activities for the students to perform during their scheduled library time. By
putting some time into planning these library events may be able to get the students to
voluntarily spend more time in the library. There are many fun activities that can be held in
library.

First of all, the fun activities that can be held in library is get caught reading. This
school-wide activity encourages students to read during their free time. Make an
announcement to the school that the library will be giving out coupons and gifts to
students who are caught reading by the librarians during the day. Students can be
anywhere in the high school and be in the midst of reading to receive their prize. The
prize can be a gift certificate or a coupon to the student store. The librarian can then take
a picture of the student to add to a collection of students who were caught. If the prize is
worthwhile, this may convince students who would not normally read to pick up a book
and begin reading.

Beside that, the fun activities that can be held in library is book buffet. The Book
Buffet activity gives students an opportunity to read genres that they never would have
picked up by themselves. Place a different book on each desk in a classroom. Tell
students that they will be reading the book for 5 to 8 minutes and then you will tell them to
switch with someone else. These books should be of a great variety with many different
types represented. At the end of the class, students should have switched 5 to 10 times.
Ask them if there are any books, they started that they would continue to read if they had
the chance. If so, make sure those students get a copy of the books they enjoyed.

In a conclusion, learning the way around the library can be daunting for the
unfamiliar. Library games can help encourage students to go to the library.
Whether the librarian and teacher are helping familiarize students with the
library in a school or public library setting, they can use activities and games to
encourage students to feel comfortable utilizing the library’s resources.
5.0 ISSUES

There are various issues found in the library of SMK Muara Tuang. Firstly, there are
not many collection of updated resources such as books, magazines and newspapers.
Most of their collection are of older books with poor condition. This is due to the poor
management of the books as they are often scattered in the book racks by irresponsible
students.

Next, there are no computer access in the library for students to search for
information online. They are relying solely on the books in the library. However, the school
have its own computer lab. Therefore, students are not really interested in visiting the
library as there are not much attraction. There are several board games such as chess,
scrabble and others but student nowadays are more attracted to online games.

Besides that, the condition of the liibrary’s flooring are in a very poor condition. The
flloor creaks so loud when it is being step on. Some part of the floor feels like they are
sinking when being step on. This can be extremely dangerous as the book racks may not
be on the stable position and might fall.

Last but not least, the library are quite small and crowded for the large amount of
students to gather in. this is due to the arrangement of tables and chairs which took
almost half of the capacity of the library. Including the capacity of the book racks, the
library can feel a little crowded and suffocating.
6.0 ORGANIZATION CHART
7.0 CONCLUSION
The SRC in SMK Muara Tuang is good but not for a large population of
student. The collection, facilities and attraction in it should be upgraded. By doing so,
it can help the school to have a better academic achievement a small student are
interested in visiting the library to study. Other than that, the organization of the
library also should be take into attention.
On a brighter side, the SRC in SMK Muara Tuang is always active in
collaborating with language club to run activities. This is really encouraging to
students as they are able to showcase their talents.
