I am very pleased to announce to the osteoarthritis imaging com-
munity that the International Society of Osteoarthritis Imaging (ISOAI)
has launched a new scientific journal entitled Osteoarthritis Imaging pub-
lished with Elsevier. I am honored to have been selected by the Board
of Directors of the ISOAI as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief. This Editorial
is intended to give an overview of the aims and scope, the reasoning for
why this journal is needed and what the potential advantages are when
publishing with Osteoarthritis Imaging.
The international Workshop on Osteoarthritis Imaging (IWOAI) was
founded by Felix Eckstein, David Hunter and Ali Guermazi in 2007. It
was and still is intended to serve as a platform and unique opportunity
for scientists, researchers, interested members of the pharmaceutical in-
dustry and others to present novel scientific advances, meet and have an
in-depth and open-minded discussion about the best way to advance the
field of osteoarthritis imaging, its relevance for disease understanding
and its role in clinical trials. The IWOAI was just held for the 15th time in
Rotterdam, The Netherlands, perfectly organized by Drs. Edwin Oei and
Jos Runhaar as a hybrid meeting due to the still on-going Covid restric-
tions regarding international travel [1]. The feedback of participants
on-site as well as on-line was overwhelming and despite the limited on-
site presence, the hybrid format allowed for fruitful in-depth discussions
across continents and time zones. During the conference Osteoarthritis
Imaging was officially launched.
The ISOAI was founded in 2019 and is fully grounded within the
imaging community. The founding members have been regular atten-
dees of the IWOAI for years. The ISOAI has now decided to launch Os-
teoarthritis Imaging for several reasons. Imaging has advanced rapidly
over recent years and the progresses in imaging technology and appli-
cation have been tremendous. The ISOAI clearly sees a need for dis-
tribution of research results in a journal with a special focus. There has
been an on-going rapid increase in publications over the last decade and
many manuscripts originating within the field of osteoarthritis imaging
and related topics currently are not ideally suited for the existing jour-
nal portfolio. As an example, some of these papers may be perceived too
methodology-oriented by the more general osteoarthritis researcher or
clinically not relevant enough for the clinically-focused radiologist or
imaging specialist. In addition, and beyond more traditional full-length
and short original research articles, Osteoarthritis Imaging provides an
opportunity to publish in formats rarely supported by other journals in-
cluding but not limited to perspectives, debate-style controversies, mini-
reviews, and narrative and systematic reviews. Letters to the Editor and
Editorials will also be considered. The journal deals with advances in
the methods and application of medical imaging in the context of ba-
sic science, clinical osteoarthritis research, its clinical application and
clinical trials. Although medical imaging aspects are emphasized, the
journal adopts an interdisciplinary approach.
We hope to be able to apply for indexing as soon as possible and
therefore the support of the entire community is hugely important to
make this goal achievable. Osteoarthritis Imaging is a fully open ac-
cess journal with reasonable and transparent article processing charges
(APCs) and members of the ISOAI will receive a permanent discount.
The ISOAI supports equity, diversity and inclusion in research and pub-
lishing, which is reflected by our Editorial Board. We welcome diverse
opinions and encourage global participation.
I am extremely grateful for the overwhelming support so far
and the extensive list of distinguished Editorial Board members
from all over the world is reflecting this enthusiasm! I am look-
ing forward to seeing Osteoarthritis Imaging come to life and hope
