AR in the Manufacturing Industry

TeamViewer – Assist AR

TeamViewer assist AR is a tool that can be used by the manufacturers support expert to guide the
technician through any repair and maintenance problems they might encounter. A factory worker in
Greece can, using AR, get the experts in Germany to help the repair without the expert needing to be
there. The expert can remotely help guide anybody through their problems. It a useful for a great
number of things, when one of the machineries in the warehouse is broken, the company would not
need to wait for an expert to get there which will lead to a big reduction in costs. (Team viewer assist

Microsoft HoloLens – Thyssenkrupp

Microsoft HoloLens is a type of Smart glasses that allows you to interact with high-definition holograms
overlaid in the real world. It is used by Thyssenkrupp to create mobility solutions in the real world. The
glasses can not only be used in manufacturing but also in engineering & construction, healthcare, and
education. An example of what it can be used for is measuring furniture and this data is then sent
directly to the manufacturer. This allows the company to make quick decisions and react quickly. In
addition, they can then show the customer what the new furniture will look like and what its function
will be. This provides extra value and customer satisfaction as well. (Vyas, 2017)

Maintenance – Siemens

An example of a use of AR in manufacturing, is a step by step guide on how to fix an issue/develop a

product. For example, at Siemens they have developed an AR tool to show information about a machine
that they are using/developing. The AR device scans the machine using infrared, and then shows the
steps needed to finish the product or what type of maintenance has to be done. It’s not only a lot easier
for technicians in the company, but it’s also a lot less time consuming. The tool can also be used in real
time with senior technicians who can see through the eyes of the maintenance worker, to guide them
through the process of creating a product.

Personnel training – Range Rover

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) collaborated with BOSCH and RE’FLECT to create AR-enabled employee training
software. The app’s goal is to train new technicians without having to remove and reinstall the vehicle
dashboard. The mechanic merely needs to aim the iPad at the dashboard to see everything which is
hidden behind the paneling, thanks to the newly built application. The technician can readily determine
the specific location of sensors, wirings, and connections, as well as interact with each individual
component.

Aircraft Assembly Process - Boeing

Boeing and AR in the Assembly Process. Boeing uses AR to improve efficiency and simplify the wiring
process of their 787-8 Freighters, approximately “130 miles of wiring go into every new aircraft”
(Boland, 2021) and each type of aircraft has its specific wiring configurations. Before AR was introduced
in the manufacturing process, this was done manually by technicians using their laptops and charts
“which meant they were constantly looking away from the project in front of them to get the assembly
instructions” (Kalluru, 2020). So, one benefit of using AR is that it “allows the company to receive
instructions in real-time without having to multitask” (Kalluru, 2020). One of the ways in which Boeing
applies AR is by using the Google Glass application. Upskill made a video showing the benefits of using
this technology (Ballard, 2020).
