Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Rationale

As you can see in this day forward everyone has the ability to

create their own market in many forms but not everyone has the capability

to handle their own retail store focusing mainly on street vendors, since

not everyone is blessed to have entered college or graduated with a

degree. Marketing is not that easy or hard as long as you have the skills

you need for handling the work which are understanding, intelligence,

being competent enough and also the capacity to adjust in your

environment. Marketing strategy is essential once you build a business

whether it is small or big since aside from the products you’re selling,

having a marketing strategic abilities is also the one that can greatly

affects one’s sales. It can also guide and emphasizes the path you are

taking to reach your goals and specific objective.

There are a lot of street vendors in the Philippines that have

different unique strategies that could help their business increase its

marketable ability considering that there are many factors that can change

one’s business to either its victory or demise. The researchers chose this

topic because foreasmuch as they see and experienced it is the strategic

method that are used in each business whether it is small or big that

makes the competition between the party thrilling and abrupt series of

price reduction that can attract customers.

1.2 Setting the Problem

The study will take place in the streets of Quiapo, Manila where

information and evidences can be gathered. The answers from

respondents chosen by the researchers which will be later on analyzed

will be from street vendors. One of the biggest problems faced by food

vendors is how will they increase their sales or profit based in the

strategies they used considering there are many elements and factors that

would disturb their strategies. The problem occurs in the streets of Quiapo

where a lot of food vendors are gathered.

1.3 Literature Foundation

“The Marketing Communication strategies of street vendors in Dar

Salaam Tanzania”

As stated by Nasibu Rajabu Mramba (2015) the marketing

communication is considered to be the center of the business process or

operation. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of knowledge/education on

how micro enterprises use this important marketing function. They

conducted a qualitative data consisting an interview and a group

discussion from the 59 street vendors in Dar es Salaam. They Analyze it

using qualitative content analysis. The result shows that, the MCS that the

street vendors use are frail or weak and is quite similar, though, the price

and marketing skills among street vendors are a factors that can be highly

influenced in terms of their choices. Therefore, it implies that Street

vendors' marketing opportunities are wasted because the public do not

know or not aware about what they can offer. This means that there is an

interference for the street vendors, specifically to their development in

marketing skills.

1.4 Seriousness

Prior to the previous studies, strategic methods which can be used

by the street vendors are really significant into one’s business since some

of the business which are noticed by the researchers that are not using

such strategies are not competent enough to go head to head with

markets that are utilizing these strategies in their market. This is needed in

order for the vendors to best determine the future direction of their

business.

1.5 General Objectives

Currently, the researchers saw and experienced some of the

aforementioned problem which is the lack of the use of strategic methods

that can be used in attracting the consumers of the business. This study

were conducted by the researcher to help street food vendors gain

awareness to their marketable ability when it comes to having a perfect

strategic method that can be used in their business.

1.6 General Purpose

The general purpose of the papers created and studied by the

researchers is to help street food vendors realize the importance and

capability of market strategic method in their sales.

1.7 Statement of the Problem

The chosen study of the researchers seeks to know whether

various strategies and skills in the market can help street food vendors

increase their income

The following questions were asked by the researchers to further

analyze the situation and better grasp the position the vendors were in:

1. What are the background profile of the vendors in terms of the

following:

i. Age

ii. Gender

iii. Business Experience

2. How can the background profile of the vendors affect their

ability to develop and establish a good market strategy?

3. Will the income of vendors who are implementing market

strategies and skills differ from those who are not?

4. Based on the result of the study, can the skills and ability of

the vendors be better improve with the help of certain

agencies that could possibly benefit both parties

1.8 Significance of the Study

This study will help people, especially, the one who are in business, not

just to give awareness but for them to gain deeper knowledge about

strategic planning in business.

This study would be beneficial to the following:

Consumer -They are the one affected because of the dynamic change of

commodities’ price. This can help the consumer to know how the

strategies of a certain vendor works and the effects of the price regarding

on the specific goods.

Researchers - this study will be a tool for researchers to apply their

knowledge and perspective. Also, this study would be beneficial to

researchers for them to understand, analyze, and discover more findings

about the strategic method of street vendors.

Vendors - the findings of this study will be beneficial to enrich their

knowledge and understanding regarding to their strategic method. The

information gathered from this study will help them identify their problems

which may lead to better strategies that will help them to increase their

income.

Academe - this study will serve as an information to a specific areas

wherein learners could strengthen their ideas and enable them to develop

their skills.

Future researchers - some of the data presented may be used as a

reference in conducting research. Also, will serve as a reference that will

provide background or an overview about the related topics.

Incoming entrepreneur - This study will help them get the idea on how

strategies works and its importance in a business. Also, they can know the

effective strategies that they can put in their future business.

1.9 Scope and Delimitation

The study covers the strategies used by street food vendors in

Quiapo, Manila and focuses on the possibility that marketable technique

can abruptly change the income of vendors, it can either cause the

business to prosper or lead it to its downfall. The researcher limited this

research to this coverage only, the study which are not controlled by the

researchers will not be take in to attention. Due to lack of respondents in

Quiapo, Manila the researchers have decided to choose 30 respondents

to be part of the Study. The research will not be formed without the help of

the surveys gathered by the researchers which will be later on analyzed.
