Class 10 - Science
Sample Paper 01

Solution

Section A
1. (a) (ii) and (iii)
Explanation: A combination reaction is one in which or more reactants combine to form a single
product. In reaction (ii), MgO and H2O combine to form Mg(OH)2. In reaction (iii). Al and O2 combine to
form Al2O3. A combination reaction is also known as a synthesis reaction.
Reaction (i) is decomposition reaction and reaction (iv) is displacement reaction.
2. (a) 15-18 times / minute
Explanation: It is different for everyone but considering an average an adult respiratory rate is 15 to
18 breaths per minute, but respiration rate under 12 or over 25 breaths per minute while resting is
considered abnormal. Newborns can have breathing rates of up to 50 breaths per minute, but by the
time a child reaches 12 years of age, the normal range is 18 to 30 breaths per minute. And after it comes
to near 15 to 20 approx.
3. (c) the solution remains colourless and no deposition is observed on iron nail
Explanation: No reaction takes place because iron is less reactive than aluminium. It cannot displace
Al from its salt solution.
To practice more questions & prepare well for exams, download myCBSEguide App. It provides
complete study material for CBSE, NCERT, JEE (main), NEET-UG and NDA exams.
4. (c) lens and screen only
Explanation: Parallel rays get converged at the focus.
5. (d) (i) - (b), (ii) - (d), (iii) - (a), (iv) - (c)
Explanation:
Insects, and some other invertebrates, exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between their
tissues and the air by a system of air-filled tubes called tracheae. Tracheae open to the outside
through small holes called spiracles.
Earthworms need oxygen just like humans, but they don't have lungs. They have a special skin
that allows them to “breathe” oxygen right through it.
Most fish exchange gases using gills on either side of the pharynx (throat). Gills are tissues that
consist of threadlike protein structures called filaments. These filaments have many functions
including the transfer of ions and water, as well as the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide,
acids, and ammonia.
The lungs are the primary organs of the respiratory system in mammals.
6. (c) in case (i) but not in case (ii)
Explanation: The mirror reflects while the lens refracts the light.
7. (d) White
Explanation: If you mix red, green, and blue light, you get white light. Red, green, and blue (RGB) are
referred to as the primary colours of light. This is an additive colour system. As more colours are
added, the result becomes lighter, heading towards white. RGB is used to generate colour on a
computer screen, a TV, and any coloured electronic display device.
8. (c) IV
Explanation: Presence of KOH solution, germinating seeds and rubber cork in conical flask and water
in beaker.

9. (d) Twinkling of stars

Explanation: Twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction. Distant star acts like a point source of
light. When the starlight enters the earth’s atmosphere it undergoes refraction continuously, due to
changing refractive index i.e. from Rarer to denser medium. It bends towards the normal successively,
hence the amount of light enters our eyes fluctuates sometime bright and sometime faint.
10. (c) Yellowish green
Explanation: The neutralization reaction takes place when hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide
are mixed.
11. (d) (i) - (d), (ii) - (a), (iii) - (c), (iv) - (b)
Explanation:
The epiglottis is a flap made of elastic cartilage covered with a mucous membrane. It opens
during breathing, allowing air into the larynx. During swallowing, it closes to prevent
aspiration, forcing the swallowed liquids or food to go down the esophagus instead. It is thus
the valve that diverts passage to either the trachea or the esophagus.
Platelets are the cells that circulate within our blood and bind together when they recognize
damaged blood vessels. When you get a cut, for example, the platelets bind to the site of the
damaged vessel, thereby causing a blood clot.
Electrocardiograph (Cardiograph) is an instrument used in the detection and diagnosis of heart
abnormalities that measures electrical potentials on the body surface and generates a record
of the electrical currents associated with heart muscle activity.
A sphygmomanometer, also known as a blood pressure meter, blood pressure monitor, or
blood pressure gauge, is a device used to measure blood pressure, composed of an inflatable
cuff to collapse and then release the artery under the cuff in a controlled manner, and a
mercury or mechanical manometer to measure the pressure.
12. (d) In the presence of air
Explanation: Roasting is heating of an ore in a regular supply of air in a furnace.
13. (a) (a) - (i), (b) - (iii), (c) - (ii), (d) - (iv)
Explanation: Twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction.
The rainbow is formed due to the dispersion and total internal reflection of sunlight by the tiny water
droplet, present in the atmosphere.
The rising sun appears red because the sun is near horizon, and therefore the sunlight has to travel
larger distance in the atmosphere which scatters away most of the blue light (shorter wavelength) by
the atmospheric particles.
The phenomenon of scattering of light by the colloidal particles is known as the Tyndall Effect. Light of
all wavelengths are scattered equally by the clouds and hence clouds appear white.
14. (b) Starch in leaf
Explanation: The covered part of the leaf does not show presence of starch, while the uncovered part
shows starch.
15. (b) (A)
Explanation: Concave mirrors are used by the dentist to see the large images of teeth of patients since
concave mirrors form enlarged images. Concave mirrors are also used for shaving purpose. Convex
mirrors form diminished images. They are used as rear-view mirrors in cars, motorcycles, scooters, etc
since they give a wide field of view.
16. (a) Combination
Explanation: 2 reactants combine to give one product. Thus, the given reaction shows the
combination.

myCBSEguide

17. (b) BL > BU

Explanation: The lighted building will throw more light.
18. (d) The band of 7 colours.
Explanation: When a white light is passed through a prism it gets split into combination of seven
colours which is known as the spectrum. The colors of the spectrum of white light are those seen in a
rainbow. They are usually named in order as: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
19. (b) Electromagnetic waves
Explanation: Electromagnetic waves (or electromagnetic radiation) are waves made of oscillating
magnetic and electric fields and include radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-
rays and gamma rays. Thus, light is just one part of the electromagnetic spectrum, the part that our
eyes can see.
20. (c) Pseudopodia
Explanation: Pseudopodia (also known as "false-feet") are temporary cytoplasm-filled parts of the cell
wall that are able to change their form in order to move and capture food or ingestion. It is basically a
temporary protrusion of the surface of an amoeboid cell which helps it to locomote (move) and capture
its food (ingestion).

21. (a) Antacid

Explanation: Antacids are mild bases which are given to a person suffering from acidity as acids reacts
with bases to form salt and water. The excess acid present in the stomach is neutralised by the bases
present in antacids and relieve indigestion.
22. (a) II and III
Explanation: Except these parts, other labeling are correct.

23. (b)
Explanation: The net power of the lenses placed in contact is given by the algebraic powers of the
individual powers.
Equivalent power of the lens combination P = P1 + P2

where f1 and f2 are the focal lengths of the two lenses, and F is the focal length of the
combination.

Explanation: The sine of the critical angle is equal to the reciprocal of the refractive index of that
material i.e.
sin c =
sin 45o =
=

= = 1.414
Section B
25. (c) Baking soda
Explanation: Other salts in the options usually appear as crystalline salts, but baking soda appears as a
white powder. Crystalline salts contain water of crystallization.
26. (b) NaCl, H2O, CO2, NH3
Explanation: Raw materials used for the manufacture of baking soda (NaHCO3) are sodium
chloride(NaCl), carbon dioxide(CO2), ammonia (NH3), and water (H2O).
The equation is as follows:
2NaHCO3(s) Na2CO3(s) + CO2(g) + H2O(g).
27. (a) Atmospheric refraction
Explanation: Twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction. Distant star acts like a point source of
light. When the starlight enters the earth’s atmosphere it undergoes refraction continuously, due to
changing refractive index i.e. from Rarer to denser medium. It bends towards the normal successively,
hence the amount of light enters our eyes fluctuates sometimes bright and sometimes faint.
28. (c) Zn
Explanation:

Galvanization is the process of applying a protective coating of zinc to iron to prevent the rusting of
iron. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which steel sections are submerged in a bath
of molten zinc.

29. (b) basic nature increasing

Explanation: The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is. The pH scale ranges from 0 to
14. A pH of 7 is neutral. A pH less than 7 is acidic. A pH greater than 7 is basic. The higher the
concentration of H+ ions, the lower is the pH value. The increase of pH from 7 to 14 indicates the
increase in the concentration of OH - ions. Means a pH range from 7 to 14 indicates basic nature
increasing.
30. (b) IV
Explanation: ZnSO4 solution is colourless. It is contained in IV.
