Class 10 - Science
Sample Paper 01
Solution
Section A
1. (a) (ii) and (iii)
Explanation: A combination reaction is one in which or more reactants combine to form a single
product. In reaction (ii), MgO and H2O combine to form Mg(OH)2. In reaction (iii). Al and O2 combine to
form Al2O3. A combination reaction is also known as a synthesis reaction.
Reaction (i) is decomposition reaction and reaction (iv) is displacement reaction.
2. (a) 15-18 times / minute
Explanation: It is different for everyone but considering an average an adult respiratory rate is 15 to
18 breaths per minute, but respiration rate under 12 or over 25 breaths per minute while resting is
considered abnormal. Newborns can have breathing rates of up to 50 breaths per minute, but by the
time a child reaches 12 years of age, the normal range is 18 to 30 breaths per minute. And after it comes
to near 15 to 20 approx.
3. (c) the solution remains colourless and no deposition is observed on iron nail
Explanation: No reaction takes place because iron is less reactive than aluminium. It cannot displace
Al from its salt solution.

complete study material for CBSE, NCERT, JEE (main), NEET-UG and NDA exams.
4. (c) lens and screen only
Explanation: Parallel rays get converged at the focus.
5. (d) (i) - (b), (ii) - (d), (iii) - (a), (iv) - (c)
Explanation:
Insects, and some other invertebrates, exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between their
tissues and the air by a system of air-filled tubes called tracheae. Tracheae open to the outside
through small holes called spiracles.
Earthworms need oxygen just like humans, but they don't have lungs. They have a special skin
that allows them to “breathe” oxygen right through it.
Most fish exchange gases using gills on either side of the pharynx (throat). Gills are tissues that
consist of threadlike protein structures called filaments. These filaments have many functions
including the transfer of ions and water, as well as the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide,
acids, and ammonia.
The lungs are the primary organs of the respiratory system in mammals.
6. (c) in case (i) but not in case (ii)
Explanation: The mirror reflects while the lens refracts the light.
7. (d) White
Explanation: If you mix red, green, and blue light, you get white light. Red, green, and blue (RGB) are
referred to as the primary colours of light. This is an additive colour system. As more colours are
added, the result becomes lighter, heading towards white. RGB is used to generate colour on a
computer screen, a TV, and any coloured electronic display device.
8. (c) IV
Explanation: Presence of KOH solution, germinating seeds and rubber cork in conical flask and water
in beaker.
23. (b)
Explanation: The net power of the lenses placed in contact is given by the algebraic powers of the
individual powers.
Equivalent power of the lens combination P = P1 + P2
where f1 and f2 are the focal lengths of the two lenses, and F is the focal length of the
combination.
F =
24. (c) 1.414
Explanation: The sine of the critical angle is equal to the reciprocal of the refractive index of that
material i.e.
sin c =
sin 45o =
=
= = 1.414
Section B
25. (c) Baking soda
Explanation: Other salts in the options usually appear as crystalline salts, but baking soda appears as a
white powder. Crystalline salts contain water of crystallization.
26. (b) NaCl, H2O, CO2, NH3
Explanation: Raw materials used for the manufacture of baking soda (NaHCO3) are sodium
chloride(NaCl), carbon dioxide(CO2), ammonia (NH3), and water (H2O).
The equation is as follows:
2NaHCO3(s) Na2CO3(s) + CO2(g) + H2O(g).
27. (a) Atmospheric refraction
Explanation: Twinkling of stars is due to atmospheric refraction. Distant star acts like a point source of
light. When the starlight enters the earth’s atmosphere it undergoes refraction continuously, due to
changing refractive index i.e. from Rarer to denser medium. It bends towards the normal successively,
hence the amount of light enters our eyes fluctuates sometimes bright and sometimes faint.
28. (c) Zn
Explanation:
Galvanization is the process of applying a protective coating of zinc to iron to prevent the rusting of
iron. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which steel sections are submerged in a bath
of molten zinc.
31. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The metal zinc readily reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen gas (H2) and
zinc chloride (ZnCl2).
32. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: The metals placed at the top of the series are most reactive.
33. (b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
34. (d) A is false but R is true.
Explanation: We can see the virtual image when the object is in between f and P.
35. (d) A is false but R is true.
Explanation: A is false but R is true.
36. (b) I and III
Explanation: The reactions between
i. Zinc and dil HCl and
ii. dil HCl and Na2CO3 are fast whereas the reaction between Zn and NaOH is slow. There is no
reaction between NaOH and Na2CO3.
Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2
Na2CO3 + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2O + CO2
37. (c) towards the screen
Explanation: When the image distance increases, object distance decreases. Thus, the distance
between the mirror and screen will decrease. So, the mirror should be moved towards the screen.
38. (c) II
Explanation: Seeds release CO2 during respiration. KOH absorbs CO2 in flask, creates a vacuum and
causes rise in water level in the delivery tube.
39. (c) converges at focus (f)
Explanation: The point of convergence of parallel beams from a distant object is called the focus.
40. (d) Basic
Explanation: Calcium phosphate is present in tooth enamel and it is known as hydroxyapatite which is
basic in nature. It is present in bones also. It is the hardest known material in the whole body. It is
present on the outside part of the crown area in a tooth.
41. (b) IV
Explanation: All parallel beams are to pass through the focus.
42. (b) increases
Explanation: The lateral displacement will increase if a glass block is made thicker as lateral
displacement is directly proportional to the thickness of the glass slab.
43. (c) D
Explanation:
