1: How many methods are engineering design concept generation?
Concept Generation Techniques
1. Morphological Analysis Combined with 6-3-5 Directed Brainstorming
2. Transformational Design using Mind-Mapping
3. WordTree Based Design by Analogy
4. Far-Field Analogies
5. Principles from Historical Innovators
6. The Theory of Inventive Problem Solving

Q2: How many methods are engineering design concept selection?

Four commonly known MCDM (Multi Criteria decision making) methods are
1. Pugh’s concept selection (Pugh)
2. weighted rating method (WRM)
3. Saaty’s Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP)
4. Roy’s Electre III (Electre)

Q3: Select an object and perform concept generation and concept

selection.
We will use Morphological Analysis Combined Directed Brainstorming for concept generation
and Pugh’s concept selection (Pugh) techniques. The idea is to have infinite ink pen. Which can
work life time without the need of changing ink.

Concept Generation
Morphological Analysis.
First, we will break it in to its functionalities

Sr no. Functions
1 Easy to handle
2 Light weight
3 Continuous flow
4 Modern design
5 Shock proves
6 Different inks
Brainstorming
During the brainstorming, two designs came out. One design uses water as a ink and convert
water into ink by using electricity. Other design uses heat and solid ink. The solid ink will melt
after heat and converted in to ink.

Concept Selection
Pugh’s concept selection (Pugh)
The decision-matrix method, also Pugh method or Pugh concept selection is a qualitative
technique used to rank the multi-dimensional options of an option set. It is frequently used in
engineering for making design decisions but can also be used to rank investment options,
vendor options, product options or any other set of multidimensional entities.
For the above case, we will use different criteria matrix. The weight matrix is also used to
because of relative importance of some parameters.

Score Quality
1 Bad
2 Normal
3 Excellent

Criteria Weight Design 1 Design 2

Weight 0.1 1 2
Different inks 0.15 2 3
Modern design 0.05 3 2
Safety 0.3 2 1
Life time 0.4 1 2
Total 1.00 1.55 1.85

Based on the above criteria we will use our design 2 for the further detailed design.
