The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK),

Surathkal is located in Mangalore City, Karnataka State,


India. Surathkal was earlier a small coastal town but with
rapid growth of the city, it is now included within the city
limits of Mangalore. Mangalore is the headquarters of the
coastal District of Dakshina Kannada and boasts of being an
important centre of business and trade in Karnataka State.
The presence of an all-weather major port at Mangalore
has seen rapid industrial growth in the hinterland covering
large parts of Karnataka and extending up to the state

Sri U. Srinivasa Mallya, a visionary and a philanthropist
(NIT Act 2007, Parliament of India, contributed immensely to the development of the coastal
region of Karnataka. Among the many achievements to his

probably the most significant one. In recognition of his role
as the founder and architect of NITK, the campus is named
after him as 'Srinivasnagar'.

the Government of India, Government of Karnataka, Alumni, Industry and other
nominees. The Chairman of the Board is nominated by the Government of India.
The Director is the administrative head of the Institute. The functioning of NITK is
governed by NIT Act 2007 and Rules laid down by Government of India.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal has established itself as one of the top technological institutions in
India and richly deserved recognition as an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act 2007. Accreditation of all our academic
programs by NBA; many with the highest rating, recognition as a QIP Centre, initiation and operationalization of MoUs with several
national and international institutions, more competitive student admissions and improved performance of students in examinations
are achievements that bear testimony to our commitment to maintain quality in all processes
and systems.

NITK is making sustained efforts towards consolidation of the state-of-the-art infrastructural


facilities for teaching and research, attracting highly qualified and motivated staff into the
existing pool and ensuring availability of all other amenities necessary for imparting globally
relevant technological education. A research culture is taking shape in the Institute through
enhanced R & D activities, creation of centres for interdisciplinary research, establishment of
industry-sponsored chairs, stronger interface with industry, alumni and a special focus on new
post-graduate and doctoral programs.
In commemoration of 50 years of glorious existence, NITK is celebrating its Golden Jubilee during August 2009-August 2010.
As part of these celebrations a large number of academic and technical events showcasing the expertise/talent of our
human resources and state of the infrastructure will be held. The Golden Jubilee will be an occasion to rejoice the success of this
renowned institutions and also to plan for the exciting future. On behalf of team-NITK, I cordially invite you to participate in the

HOW TO REACH NITK


The Institute is located 22 kms north of Mangalore City along the Kanyakumari Mumbai National Highway
17, amid 300 acres of sylvan surroundings with the picturesque Western Ghats on the east and sun-kissed
sands of the Arabian Sea to the west.
New Delhi
NITK is easily accessible from all parts of the country. Being situated right on the NH 17, the Institute and
Campus is very well connected by bus routes to the North and South. Mangalore is also connected by NH

48 to Bangalore and there are over 200 luxury buses plying daily between Mangalore and Bangalore.
Mumbai
Surathkal, on the Konkan Railway (linking Mumbai to Kanyakumari), is the nearest rail station and is a
stopover for most trains passing through Konkan Railway. While Surathkal and Kankanady Junction are
Goa the closest alighting points for visitors coming by train from the North; Mangalore Central is the Terminus
for many trains from South India. The Mangalore airport is just 20 km from the Campus and there are
