Tecnologia de Micropilotes
Noviembre 2021
Outline
• What is a micropile? Types of micropiles?
Components and design principles?

• Construction Sequence

• Testing

• Applications

• Examples
• Predrilled vertical or
battered element

• Intended to work on
tension or
compression

• Typical D = 7 to 9.5”

• Bond length in
bedrock (Typ.)

• Retrofit and new!

• Cased vs. DM-4 2019/AASHTO
uncased 2017: Components
section

• Central bar:
stinger vs
continuous

• Plung depth

• Stinger depth

• Bond length
Design principles (DM-4/AAHTO/FHWA)

• Structural capacity of cased vs. uncased zones

• Concrete and steel: tension vs compression

• Geotechnical design – bond length

Drilling:
• Drilling: permanent
casing. Drill bit typically
inside – eccentric tool

• Bond zone
determination

• Retrieve of drilling bit

• Lowering the bar

“controlled manner”

• Grout
Testing (FHWA/AASHTO):

• Verification testing: typically 1 or 2 per

substructure. Before production micropiles. Taken
to 2 x Unfactored load.

• Proof testing: typically 5% production micropiles.

Taken to 1.6 x Unfactored load.

• Similar acceptance criteria but verification

requires 60 minutes creep test vs 10 minutes for
proof testing.
Testing: tension vs. compression

Jack: above vs below beam

deformation

Pads vs. reaction anchors

Acceptance criteria

• Plastic elongation: typically limited to less than

0.3 to 0.5”. Plastic elongation at any point = Total
– elastic

• Creep: < 0.04” in 10 minutes of constant load, or <

0.08” in 60 minutes.

• Pullout failure: at max load micropile is not failing

by pullout, controlled by slope of curve
Pile Cap
Final product. Typical
considerations:
• Bond zone typically
on bedrock

• Typical design load

200 to 400 kips

• Mainly constructed
for compression
load

• By 2021 standard
foundation
element. $$$?
Main applications:

• Foundation
elements: vertical
and lateral loads

• Very useful when

predrilling for
driven piles is
needed

• Retrofits and new

Landslide Stabilization:

• As shear pins - rock slides

(block vs block). Vertical and
battered.

• As axial elements : compression

and tension. Vertical and
battered.

• Need of a pile cap? Head

support?
