INTERNATIONAL AIR TRAFFIC STATISTICS


OCTOBER-DECEMBER, 2019*
There are 81 scheduled international carriers- 7 Indian carriers and 74 foreign carriers. Currently
India has air connectivity with 52 countries through 340 routes.

The scheduled international passenger traffic for the fourth quarter (October-December) of the year
2019 stands at 16.5 million while the international passenger traffic for the corresponding period in
the year 2018 stood at 16.3 million thereby witnessing a growth of 1.2 per cent.

It has been observed that in the Year 2019 except April, May, August, November and December
there is positive growth in all the month in terms of the total number of international passengers

MARKET SHARE
As can be seen from chart 3, the share of

fourth quarter (October-December) of the

per cent respectively. In the same Quarter
39% (Q4) of the year 2018, the share of Indian and
foreign carriers were 40.6 and 59.4 percent

top ten international carriers accounted for

maximum number of international
passengers followed by AirIndia and
Emirates Airlines. All Indian Carriers except Go Air, VISTARA and Alliance Airlines operating on

international routes, find place in the top 10 list (Chart 4). Except Sri Lankan Airlines and Singapore
Airlines, all the foreign carriers in the top 10 list originate from Gulf countries.

Approximately, half of the total India’s inbound passengers are accounted for by the countries in
the region- Africa & Middle East (Chart 5). Same pattern is observed for the number of India’s
outbound passengers (Chart 6).

If we look at the specific countries within the regions shown in the chart (7), it is found that
maximum passengers are carried to and from United Arab Emirates (30.2 percent) followed by
Singapore (7.7) Thailand (7.6 percent) and Saudi Arabia (5.5 per cent). Among European Countries,
United Kingdom is the most travelled destination as about 3.1 percent international passengers
travelled to and from UK during Q4, 2019.

Out of the 29 Indian cities from where international passengers Embark/ Disembark, 5 Indian cities
accounted for most (approximately 69 per cent) of the international passenger traffic (Chart 8).
Delhi tops the position in this category with a share of 28.5 per cent followed by Mumbai (17.8 per
cent share) and Chennai (8.9 per cent share).
Domestic and foreign carriers connect India to 52 countries through 340 Routes. Out of these
routes top 10 Routes accounted for approximately 20 per cent of the total international passenger
traffic during the fourth quarter of the year 2019.
Maximum international passengers were carried on the Dubai-Mumbai sector followed by Dubai-
Delhi.

As regard to freight, share of Indian and Foreign

international carriers, top ten carriers accounted for
almost 67 per cent of the international freight traffic

Emirates carried the maximum freight with 13.4 per
86% cent market share followed by Qatar airways (11.6
per cent), Cathay pacific (10.6 percent) and Air
India (8.6 Percent) during the fourth quarter of the
year 2019 (Chart 10).
INDIAN CARRIERS FOREIGN CARRIERS
Air India is among top five scheduled freight carriers
with market shares of 8.6 per cent during the fourth
quarter of the year 2019. Other Indian Carriers,
carry approximately 5.5 percent of the total international freight traffic.

As far as India’s inbound freight traffic is concerned, Africa & Middle East tops the position with a
share of 28.4 per cent followed by Asia Pacific (24 per cent share) and Europe (23.9 per cent share)
during the fourth quarter of the year 2019 (Chart 11).

If
we look at India’s outbound freight traffic, Africa & Middle East tops the position with a share of
51.2 per cent followed by Europe (20.2 per cent share) and Asia Pacific (16.3 per cent share) in the
fourth quarter of the year 2019 (Chart 12).
