Brief Introduction
In this time of advance technology, every piece of information is readily available at
your fingertips. However, one needs to be mindful of the authenticity or truthfulness of the
ideas before utilizing them. The ability to recognize the relevant pieces of information will be
useful in writing your research report.
After collecting all relevant information and concepts, you may now integrate such
information into your paper. However, you need to know that there are unintentional
incidents of plagiarism that could lead to serious consequences. In this regard, you need a
guide on how to have a better grasp of the information that is relevant to your topic while
building credibility of your paper. In this lesson, you are going to ascertain ways of

incorporating other writers’ work into your writing. Here are the following ways to incorporate
your sources.
1. Quotation – must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the source.
They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the
original author.
 Consider any words, phrases, or brief passages that you believe should be
quoted directly.
When to use it?
 To add the power of an author’s words to support your argument
 To disagree with an author’s argument
 To highlight particularly eloquent or powerful phrases or passages
 To compare and contrast specific points of view
 To note the important research that precedes your own
2. Paraphrasing – involves putting a passage from source material into your own
words. It must also be attributed to the source. Paraphrased material is usually
shorter than the original passage, taking a somewhat broader segment of the source
and condensing it slightly.
 Paraphrase important supporting points that come up in the essay.
When to use it?
 To clarify a short passage from a text
 To avoid overusing quotations
 To explain a point when exact wording isn’t important
 To explain the main points of a passage
 To report numerical data or statistics (preferred in APA papers)
3. Summarizing – involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only
the main point(s). Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and take a
broad overview of the source material.
When to use it?
 To establish background or offer an overview of a topic
 To describe knowledge (from several sources) about a topic
 To determine the main ideas of a single source

Examples:
Below is a passage taken from Raymond S. Nickerson’s “How We Know-and Sometimes
Misjudge-What Others Know: Imputing One’s Own Knowledge to Others.” Psychological
Bulletin 125.6 (1999): p737.
“In order to communicate effectively with other people, one must have a reasonably
accurate idea of what they do and do not know that is pertinent to the communication.
Treating people as though they have knowledge that they do not have can result in
miscommunication and perhaps embarrassment. On the other hand, a fundamental rule of
conversation, at least according to a Gricean view, is that one generally does not convey to
others information that one can assume they already have.”

Quotation Paraphrasing Summarizing

As stated by Nickerson Nickerson (1999) suggests that Nickerson (1999) argues that

 Provide support for claims or add credibility to your writing

 Refer to work that leads up to the work you are now doing
 Give examples of several points of view on a subject

 Distance yourself from the original by quoting it in order to

4. Citation – is a reference to the source of information used in your research. It also

gives your readers the information necessary to find that source again and helps
them distinguish your ideas from those of your sources. This will actually emphasize
the originality of your own work.

 In-text citation - refers to any citation in your text which uses the author’s last name
and the year of publication.
When integrating a summary or paraphrase, use the author-date-system.

Activities
Integrate to Create!
A. Directions: Your teacher asks you to write an essay on why students should proofread
their work. While looking for additional information, you come across the following excerpt
from a blog written by Alex Turner:
“Students must remember to proofread their work to improve the quality and clarity of
their research papers. For example, editing helps students to delete the unnecessary words
in sentences. In this case, editing enhances clarity and flow of information in sentences.
Also, this process ensures that students correct spelling mistakes, grammar, and sentence
structures. Along these lines, people must re-read their works severally to remove inevitable
errors made during the writing process. Besides, research papers with minimal grammatical
mistakes achieve high scores. Thus, every student must remember to proofread the work
when writing a research paper to remove possible grammatical errors” (Turner, 2019, par.
4).

Integrate the entire excerpt in your essay using quotation, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
Be sure to cite the source in your answers using the APA in-text citation.

1. In your own words, write the best paraphrase you can of Turner’s passage.
Alex Turner, author of the blog, Writing a Research Paper pointed out that…

2. Using what you have learned, write the best summary you can of Turner’s passage.
Turner reiterated to the students that…

3. Rewrite your summary or paraphrase to include a quotation from Turner’s passage.

It is important for students to proofread their work because as Alex Turner stated…

The integrity of your research report depends on the credible sources of information that
you will incorporate in your paper and how well you employ the following skills:
1. Quotations - must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the
source. They must match the source document word for word and must be
attributed to the original author.
2. Paraphrasing - involves putting a passage from source material into your own
words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source. Paraphrased
material is usually shorter than the original passage, taking somewhat broader
segment of the source and condensing it slightly.
3. Summarizing - involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including
only the main point(s). Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and
take a broad overview of the source material.
4. Citation – is a reference to the source of information used in your research. Any
time you directly quote, paraphrase or summarize the essential elements of
someone else's idea in your work, an in-text citation should follow.

Checking Your Understanding

Directions: Read the excerpt and take note of relevant information using summary,
paraphrase, and quotations. Then, cite your answers using the APA in-text citation.

_______ 6. While the extent of media coverage for hate crimes has risen and fallen over
time, these considerable shifts in media coverage bore no connection to the reality of
hate-based sentiment or activities (Colomb & Damphousse, 2004, p.160).
_______ 7. According to Leslie Berestein (2003), the Middle Eastern water pipe known
as the hookah recently "has been resurrected in youth-oriented coffee houses,
restaurants and bars, supplanting the cigar as the tobacco fad of the moment" (p. 10).

_______ 8. Belenko (2001), as cited in Henggeler et. al. (2006, p. 42), indicates that
cross-disciplinary collaborations between criminal justice and substance abuse
professionals within structured court and closely supervised environment help decrease
drug and alcohol abuse.
_______ 9. Conservation efforts traditionally have represented Yosemite as a work of art
marked by distinct borders (Solnit 263). While Solnit acknowledges that this
representation may serve to protect the park, she also suggests that it limits the
individual’s relationship to the landscape (263).
_______ 10. Efforts to preserve Yosemite “as though it were a painting” create a
distance between the visitor and the landscape (Solnit 263). Solnit worries that such a
distance between nature and visitor implies that nature is “a place in which we do not
belong, a place in which we do not live, in which we are intruders” (263).
