– Gone to: đi chưa về

now.
–> Mary đã từng ở Pháp nhưng giờ đã về Anh rồi.

Cách sử dụng thì quá khứ hoàn thành


Khi hai hành động cùng xảy ra trong quá khứ, ta dùng thì quá khứ hoàn thành cho hành động
xảy ra trước và quá khứ đơn cho hành động xảy ra sau.
 I met them after they had divorced each other. (Tôi gặp họ sau khi họ ly dị nhau.)
Khi thì quá khứ hoàn thành thường được dùng kết hợp với thì quá khứ đơn, ta thường dùng
kèm với các giới từ và liên từ như: by (có nghĩa như before), before, after, when, till, untill, as
soon as, no sooner…than
 No sooner had he returned from a long journey than he was ordered to pack his bags.(Anh ta mới
đi xa về thì lại được lệnh cuốn gói ra đi.)
 When I arrived John had gone away.(Khi tôi đến thì John đã đi rồi.)
 Yesterday, I went out after I had finished my homework. (Hôm qua, tôi đi chơi sau khi tôi đã làm
xong bài tập.)
Trong câu điều kiện loại 3 để diễn tả điều kiện không có thực
 If I had known that, I would have acted differently.
 She would have come to the party if she had been invited.
Hành động xảy ra trong 1 khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ, trước 1 mốc thời gian khác
 I had lived abroad for twenty years when I received the transfer.

Indefinite articles (Mạo từ không xác định "a" và "an")
 Dùng "an" trước một danh từ bắt đầu bằng:

 Động từ theo sau Both….and….luôn được chia ở số nhiều

2. Not only…….but also ..( diễn tả ý: không những …..mà còn…..). Sau Not only….but also có các

Ex: - Not only Mai but also Tan are good students in my class.

 Either ….or dung trong câu khẳng định để diễn đạt ý hoặc người này hay người kia, hoặc cái này
hay cái kia. Theo sau có thể là N/ Pronoun (làm chủ từ hay túc từ); Động từ nguyên mẫu hay danh động
từ

Ex: - Either he or I have to go to the meeting this afternoon

1. Khi chủ ngữ và túc từ trong câu chủ động là đại từ, ta phải thay đổi cho phù hợp.

2. Khi chủ ngữ trong câu chủ động là: people, I, we, you, they, someone, somebody,

You wouldn’t be so hungry if you had had breakfast this morning.(Kinh nghiệm: Hoặc không
cho trạng từ thì ta dịch tình huống)
3. Đôi khi thì hiện tại đơn được dùng cho cả hai mệnh đề của câu điều kiện để diễn tả một
sự thật hiển nhiên; nó được gọi là zero conditional.
Ex: If we don’t water these flowers, they die.(Nếu chúng ta không tưới nước cho cây thì chúng
sẽ chết)
4. Mệnh đề chính trong câu điều kiện loại 1 có thể là một câu đề nghị hoặc lời mời(Động
từ chỉ mệnh lệnh)
Ex: If you are wrong, I am right (Nếu bạn sai thì tôi đúng)
If you see Peter at the meeting, please tell him to return my book.(Nếu bạn gặp Peter tại cược
họp thì hãy bảo anh ấy gửi lại cho tôi cuốn sách)

5. Đổi từ if sang unless:

Quy tắc 1: Thêm “s” vào cuối danh từ để chuyển thành danh từ số nhiều

Ví dụ: pen -> pens (cái bút), car -> cars (xe ô tô), house -> houses (ngôi nhà),…

Quy tắc 2: Danh từ tận cùng là -ch, -sh, -s, -x, thêm -es vào cuối để chuyển thành danh từ số
nhiều

Ví dụ: watch -> watches (đồng hồ), box -> boxes (cái hộp), class -> classes (lớp học),…

Quy tắc 3: Danh từ tận cùng là -y, đổi thành -ies để chuyển thành danh từ số nhiều

Ví dụ: lady -> ladies (phụ nữ), baby -> babies (em bé),..

Lưu ý: Một số danh từ tận cùng là y, nhưng chỉ thêm “s” để thành danh từ số nhiều.
Ví dụ: boy -> boys (cậu bé), ray -> rays (tia)

Quy tắc 4: Danh từ tận cùng là -o, thêm -es vào cuối để chuyển thành danh từ số nhiều

Ví dụ: potato -> potatoes (củ khoai tây), tomato -> tomatoes (quả cà chua),…

Lưu ý: Một số danh từ tận cùng là o, nhưng chỉ thêm “s” vào cuối để thành danh từ số nhiều.

Ví dụ: zoo -> zoos (sở thú), piano -> pianos (đàn piano), photo -> photos (bức ảnh)…

Quy tắc 5: Danh từ tận cùng là -f,-fe,-ff, đổi thành -ves để thành danh từ số nhiều.

Ví dụ: bookshelf -> bookshelves (giá sách), số nhiều của leaf -> leaves (cái lá), số nhiều của knife ->
knives (con dao),…

Lưu ý: Một số trường hợp danh từ tận cùng là f, nhưng chỉ thêm “s” để thành danh từ số nhiều.  

Ví dụ: roof -> roofs (mái nhà), cliff -> cliffs (vách đá), belief -> beliefs (niềm tin), chef -> chefs (đầu
bếp), chief -> chief (người đứng đầu)… 

Quy tắc 6: Danh từ tận cùng là -us, đổi thành -i để thành danh từ số nhiều.

Ví dụ: cactus – cacti (xương rồng), focus – foci (tiêu điểm)

Quy tắc 7: Danh từ tận cùng là -is, đổi thành -es để thành danh từ số nhiều.

Ví dụ: analysis -> analyses (phân tích), ellipsis – ellipses (dấu ba chấm),…

Quy tắc 8: Danh từ tận cùng là -on, đổi thành -a để thành danh từ số nhiều.

Ví dụ: phenomenon -> phenomena (hiện tượng), criterion – criteria (tiêu chí),…

2.2. Trường hợp đặc biệt

Có một số danh từ khi chuyển từ danh từ số ít sang danh từ số nhiều vẫn giữ nguyên, không thay
đổi.

Ví dụ: a deer -> deer (con hươu), a fish -> fish (con cá), a sheep – sheep (con cừu),..

Một số danh từ số nhiều bất quy tắc:

1. Few/ A few: dùng trước các danh từ đếm được số nhiều.


  * FEW: rất ít, hầu như không có (chỉ số lượng rất ít, không nhiều như mong muốn, thường có nghĩa
phủ định)
    EX: I don’t want to take the trip to Hue because I have few friends there.
    They hardly find a job because there are few jobs.
    * A few: Một vài, một ít (thường có nghĩa khẳng định và chỉ một số lượng nhỏ, gần nghĩa với some)
      EX: There are a few empty seats here.
       You can see a few houses on the hill.
2. Little/ A little: dùng trước các danh từ không đếm được.
  * Little: rất ít, hầu như không có (chỉ số lượng rất ít, không nhiều như mong muốn, thường có nghĩa
phủ định)
   EX: I have very little time for reading.
   We had little rain all summer.
  * A little: một ít, một chút (thường có nghĩa khẳng định và chỉ một số lượng nhỏ, gần nghĩa với some)

IV. All, most, some, no, all of, most of, some of, none of:
1.All (tất cả), most (phần lớn, đa số), some (một vài), no (không), được dùng như từ hạn định

- Chúng ta có thể bỏ of sau all hoặc half khi of đứng trước từ hạn định (không được bỏ of khi of đứng

1. Thay đổi động từ trong câu tường thuật
Động từ tường thuật là động từ giới thiệu câu nói trực tiếp hay câu nói gián tiếp. Khi đổi từ câu
trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp, động từ tường thuật được thay đổi tùy theo trường hợp cụ thể.
Dưới đây là các động tường thuật dùng trong câu:
Said → said that
Said to sb → told sb
Ex: - He said, “I am twenty years old.”
He said that he was twenty years old.
- He said to me, “I work in a factory.”
He told me that he worked in a factory.
2. Thay đổi thì trong câu tường thuật:
Khi động từ tường thuật ở các thì quá khứ, chúng ta đổi thì trong câu gián tiếp như sau:

a. Câu điều kiện loại 2 và 3
Ex: “If I were older, I would retire.”, he said.
He said if he were older, he would retire.
b. Câu trực tiếp diễn tả một chân lí, hay một thói quen ở hiện tại.
Ex 1: Trực tiếp: The teacher said, “The earth moves round the Sun”
Gián tiếp: The teacher said that The earth moves round the Sun.
Ex 2: Trực tiếp: My wife always drinks coffee for breakfast.
Gián tiếp: He said that his wife always drinks coffee for breakfast.
c. Động từ tường thuật ở thì hiện tại đơn, hiện tại tiếp diễn, hiện tại hoàn thành, tương
lai.
Ex: He says/ He is saying/ He has said/ He will say, “The bus is coming.” → He says the bus
is coming.
d. Không thay đổ thì của động từ trong câu gián tiếp nếu có thời gian xác định trong quá
khứ.
Ex. She said, ‘‘I was born in 1980’’
She said that she was born in 1980
e. Các động từ khiếm khuyết: could, would, might, ought to, should thường không thay
đổi trong câu tường thuật.
Ex. He said, ‘I might come’
He said that He might come’
- Khi tường thuật mệnh đề ước muốn: “wish’
Ex: He said; “I wish I had a lot of money”
 He wishes (that) he had a lot of money
- Khi tường thuật cấu trúc: “It’s (high/ about) time”
Ex: She said; “It’s about time you went to bed; children”
 She told her children that It’s about time they went to bed

I . REPORTED SPEECH: STATEMENTS (Câu trần thuật)


Ta dùng động từ say hoặc tell để tường thuật:

* S + said + (that) + S + V
* S + told + O + (that) + S + V

Ex: He said, “I have just bought a computer today.”


He said that he had just bought a computer that day.
Linda said, “There is someone at the door, Bill.”
Linda told Bill that there was someone at the door.

II. REPORTED SPEECH: QUESTIONS (Câu hỏi)


a. Yes-No questions: Khi đổi sang câu gián tiếp, ta cần thêm if hoặc whether trước chủ từ của
câu hỏi được tường thuật:

* S + wondered + if /whether + S + V
* S + wanted to know + if /whether + S +V
Ex: He said to me, “Are you from Canada?”
He asked me if/whether I was from Canada.

- Các hình thức cảm thán bắt đầu bằng “what’ và “how” chuyển sang gián tiếp bằng:
