PARKROYAL AT THE PICKERING, SINGAPORE

Terrapin Bright Green, (2017), wrote that the Parkroyal’s design aims to blur the line between outdoor
and indoor using biodiverse plantings on skygardens cantilevered at the façade of the structure, visible
to the hotel rooms. The E shape of the building allows the natural lighting to pass the rooms. Rainwater
harvesting system is also used for the hotel’s water features. The presence of biomorphic forms and
patterns can also be found at the hotel’s interior. The Parkroyal on Pickering is a conspicuous fusion of
nature and architecture and a subtle demonstration of environmentally sustainable urban design.

1.1 Environment
Parkroyal was built as a hotel as a garden that really increased the site's green growth potential This
hotel is located in the central business district and Chinatown districts of Singapore, close to
Singapore's first privately owned garden - Hong Lim Park. Parkroyal is an illustration of how a city
may be made to be 200 percent green.

1.2 Macro Climate

Singapore is located closer to the equator and has a tropical climate with plentiful rainfall, high and
consistent temperatures, and high humidity throughout the year. Many of its climatic factors, such
as temperature and relative humidity, do not vary much from month to month. (Meteorological
Service Singapore, n.d.).

1.3 Form Development

The building has an E-shaped form. All of its guest rooms are facing the north, and each has a view
of the Hong Lim Park and the hotel gardens.

1.4 Function
The proposal, planned as a hotel and office in a garden, is an investigation into how we may not only
maintain but also expand greenery in a densely built-up city center in an architecturally stunning,
integrated, and sustainable manner. Parkroyal is located in the east wing of the building, while the
attorney general's chambers are located in the north-west wing. (Huan, et.al, 2018).

1.5 Concept
A contoured podium, known as topographical architecture, is inspired by terraced gardens. It
includes plazas, lawns, and terraces that flow into the interiors. The clean, sleek tower blocks blend
seamlessly with the adjacent high-rise office structures. The serpentine strips of fluted concrete flow
uninterruptedly along the length and width of the podium. The serpentine strips of fluted concrete
flow over the length and breadth of the podium without interruption or recognition of the exterior-
interior divide. (Huan, et.al, 2018).

1.6 Design Details

Designer specifically designed the bottom of the garden hotel and the border of the hanging gardens
in the architecture design area to create a similar to the rock concrete panel and verandas, as the
originally vertical increase on the building of the ups and downs of scattered at bizarre evolving
feeling. The entire external design creates a great visual and impact sensation for the viewer. (Nan,
2018).

The hotel’s design concept revolves around Biophilic Architecture. Several biophilic patterns are
showcase along the exterior and interior of the building. Visual Connection with Nature can be seen
on the multilevel skygardens adjacent to the hotel rooms. Biomorphic Forms and Patterns are
featured on the platform and sky-gardens' topological layers; the lobby canopy and front desk's
wooden finishes; and the furnishings and light fittings.
