Ratna: I think you should tell the truth to Mr. Bimo. Perhaps, he will ask you to
take it at home.

Giving advice

Dialoge 2

Brian: Hi, Robert! You know, I got a wallet on the way to hospital

yesterday. Should I give it back to owner of the wallet?

Robert: Well, I think you should do it. Do you know who the owner is?

Brian: Yes, I also got the identity card of the owner in it. It shows me the address.

Robert: That’s okay. You can call the owner first if you want.

E. Tips on Asking and Giving Advice

1. Distinguish between “Advise (verb)” and “Advice (noun)”
2. The form of the "Ought to" verb model has a similar meaning to the
"Should" verb model which means "must". Both are forms of model verbs
that are often used in giving "advice".
3. The phrase "You'd better" is an abbreviation of "You had better" which
can be interpreted as "you should" which is a very firm level of advice
(pressing / forcing)
4. To make the advice we give others feel less pushy, convey the "advice" in
the form of a question. For example like: Why don't you take the bus
instead?

4
5. The difference "Why don't you . . ." and “How about . . ." in delivering
advice are: when using the form of the question "Why don't you . . ." we
will use the infinitive verb form without "to", while when we use the
question form "How about . . ." what we use is the gerund form (verb-ing)

language procedure. if we want to use words that are in accordance with the rules
of the English language and when we want to give an opinion we have to rethink
what we are going to convey so that our opinion can be accepted by others and if
the opinion we give is not accepted by others, we must accept it. gracefully.
