CHAPTER 1
PRELIMINARY

A. Background

An idiom is a grammar that is very interesting to learn and even

practice in everyday conversation. but not a few people, especially
students or college students, still find it difficult to understand what idioms
themselves are. In addition, idioms are grammatical that are patented or
cannot be changed in terms of the word formula. This is what makes many
people confused with the hidden meaning of the idiom. whereas with
idioms, we can make our conversations more interesting.
Therefore, the author describes a paper that contains the notion of
idioms, the purpose of idioms, the meaning of daily conversations, and
even examples of the use of idioms in daily conversations. I hope this
paper can provide useful information for readers.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

A. Definition Of Idiom
An idiom is a language unit whose meaning cannot be drawn from the general
grammatical rules that apply in the language or cannot be predicted from the
lexical meaning of the elements that mean it up. However, the overall meaning of
an idiom with the lexical meaning of the elements that make it up can still be
found in a comparative historical and etymological relationship. So, this means
that there is an idiom meaning that can still be predicted from the lexical meaning
of its constituent elements (Chaer, 1984; in istiqomah,2008).
An idiom is the construction of elements that choose each other, each member
has a meaning that exists only because it is with others or a construction whose
meaning Is not the same as the combined meaning (Kridalaksana, 2005; in
Istiqomah, 2008).
An idiom is a group of words that have their meaning that is different from
the meaning of each word in the group. Idioms cannot be translated literally into
foreign languages. Idioms are a matter of using language by native speakers
(Alwasilah, 1985; in Sastrawacana, 2010).
From the three opinions by Chaer, Kridalaksana, and Alwasilah, it can be
concluded that an idiom is a combination of words where the language unit and its
meaning are different from the word units of its constituent. But not infrequently
idioms can be searched for their meaning through the form of the word that forms
it.
B. Purposes of Idiom used in daily conversation
Actually, in everyday language, idioms may or may not appear at all.
Sometimes expressions are spoken for several purposes such as asserting,
sarcasm, softening language, and others.
Using idioms in daily conversation can also increase our knowledge of other
English grammar. besides that, we can also create a more creative and more fun
conversation atmosphere.
C. Definition of Daily Conversation

2
Daily conversation is formed from two words of daily and conversation. As
reported by Cambridge Dictionary daily means frequent or usual activities we do
every day. While the conversation is a talk, especially an informal one, in which
news and ideas are exchanged. So we can conclude that daily conversation is
conversations that we usually have with other people in our daily life.
D. How is an idiom used in daily conversation
Before we enter examples of using idioms in daily conversations, here are
examples of idioms that are often used:
1. Hit The Sack
This idiom means sleep and usually, it indicates that we are very tired and
want to rest soon.
2. Twist someone’s arm
It means you managed to convince someone and that person agrees to do
what you want.
3. Lose your touch
Usually, this idiom is used to indicate if we are no longer good at doing
work or things that we are usually good at doing, so things get messy.
4. Go cold turkey
This idiom signifies the sudden cessation of an addictive or dangerous
activity, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, or drugs.
5. Face the music
Usually, this idiom is used when someone has to face reality and accept
all the consequences, good or bad (but often bad).
6. Blow of steam
Blow off steam is usually used to express activities to release stress,
anger, or emotions by doing activities as a diversion.
7. Up in the air
This idiom means to state in an uncertain or unclear situation. Or it could
also mean that there is no definite plan.
8. On the ball

3
Usually, this idiom is used to express situations where we are considered
to understand a certain thing, are very prepared, or react quickly (and
appropriately
9. Look like a million dollars
The use of this word is usually as a high compliment because it means
someone looks very amazing and attractive.
10. To pony up
This idiom is used for an expression that means to pay off a debt or pay
something.
Here I will give an example of how idioms are used in daily conversation
with online/offline class themes:
Soobin: hi yeonjun, whatcha doing?
Yeonjun: I don’t know I’m happy now that our lessons are offline but I feel so
tired. I think I’m going to hit the sack.
Soobin: yeah, same with. Have you ever thought that online would be better? We
don’t have to be stored of going to school.
Yeonjun: yeah you’re right, with the online classes we don’t have to worry about
going to school. But if the online class becomes less effective.
Soobin: yeah that’s true too. And also if I stay at home I feel bored. While at
school I can meet with friends.
Yeonjun: right, meeting friends is indeed the most fun. So Soobin if you’re
stressed with the online class what will you do?
Soobin: ah right, online classes are stressful for me. I usually go out to blow off
steam. So how about you?
Yeonjun: I also do like you do. But if I’m lazy to go out I’ll be like a couch
potato.
Soobin: waaw, yes you are. A couch potato. But yesterday I saw on the news that
we will be back online because the corona case is rising again.
Yeonjun: yeah but it’s still up in the air news. So we’ll just have to wait for the
government’s decision.
Soobin: sure. Okay, I want to go home first then. Keep your chin up to the next
offline class bruh, bye.

4
Yeonjun: for sure you too. Bye.

CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION

An idiom is a combination of words where the language unit and its meaning
are different from the word units of its constituent. But not infrequently idioms can
be searched for their meaning through the form of the word that forms it.
Using idioms in daily conversation also increases our knowledge of other
English grammar. besides that, we can also create a more creative and more fun
conversation atmosphere.
Daily conversation is conversations that we usually have with other people in
our daily life.
So we can conclude that idioms can be used in our daily conversation. and
this can produce useful things, for example, our knowledge can be more extensive
about idioms and our conversations will be more interesting.
