DISCUSSION

2.1. The Explanation from Mood and Its Type

English moods refer to a grammatical emotion that express the speaker’s

attitude toward what is written or spoken. The mood is expressed through the verb.
Changing the nuances of verbs can change the tone of a sentence. Verb moods can
indicate a situation or reality.
There are three main moods in English that show how a speaker feels about
the topic discussed in the sentence.
The type of mood is :
 Indicative Mood
 Imperative Mood
 Subjunctive Mood

2.2. The Explanation from Indicative Mood

The indicative mood express facts, beliefs or question. Statements in the

indicative mood may be positive or negative. Indicative mood uses the simple,
progressive, and perfect tenses. This nuance is the "normal" form of verbs, so
almost all verbs used in written or spoken form have this nuance.

Indicative Mood Examples:

 Surabaya is the capital city of East Java.

 Have you finished the task I assigned to you two days ago?
 Ostrich can’t fly.
 His temperature is very high and he starts hallucinating.
 How much money do you get from your job?
 The vacation was funded by our parents’ retirement fund.

2.3. The Explanation from Imperative Mood

The Imperative mood express commands, prohibitions, suggestions,

requests. This nuance is usually used to give orders or make requests. Although
sometimes the word “please” is added, the nuance of the verb is still imperative.
This nuance is sometimes used to express instructions. Statements in the imperative
mood may be positive or negative.

Imperative Mood Example :

 Could you please take your cigarette and smoke outside, please?
 I am your mother. Do not talk back to me that way, Young Lady!
 Mix the flour and sugar with one liter of milk!
 Can you not chew your food so loud, please?
 Keep the operation room neat!

2.4. The Explanation from Subjunctive Mood

Subjunctives mood express doubt or something that is contrary to facts. This

nuance expresses demands, suggestions, hopes, interests of a thing that is very
unlikely to occur, the subjunctive can also be used to declare a request. What is
expressed does not always have to be facts, but it can be possibilities.

Subjunctive Mood Example :

 I wish we could still be together.

 May God bless you and your family.
 She hoped she could meet me again the future.
 If I were you, I would take the car to the workshop and have it checked.
