Who, What, Where

A. OBJECTIVES

After studying this material, students are able to:

1. draw a conclusion about: a) people things, and places; b) people and things (subject and
object) in passive sentences

2. understand the questions and answers which may

1. INTRODUCTION

In short conversations, questions about people, activities, and places are frequently
asked. Sometimes, the short conversations do not either clearly or directly state the answers
for this. However, you are insisted to be familiar to the questions.

Here are some frequent questions on people, places, and things asked on short
conversations;

1. WHO is probably speaking?

2. WHAT wil she probably do next?

3. WHERE does the dialogue probably take place?

Examples 1

Women: ‘’ john has the potential to be a professional musician, but he is too lazy to
practice’’

Man: ‘’ what a shame!’’

Explanation : the response ‘’what a shame’’ shows the 2nd speaker may be a bit disappointed.
John is actually talented, but he does not want to practice to improve.

Examples 2

Women: do you make conections with the maple avenue line?

Man : yes, ma’am. Pay your fare and I’ll give you a free transfer and call
you before we get to maple avenue

Explanation : -there are some key words we can find in the conversation

-the underlined words in the cate that this conversation involves land
transportation. There are ‘bus’and ‘taxi’. Then, the word ‘a transfer’ is impossibly related to
taxi.

2. Who and what in passives

In short dialogues, the speakers may speak either in active or passive voice. After the
dialogues, you are required to draw conclusion from their statements. And the answer you
need to pick are most frequently in the opposite forms. In short, whe the speaker speaks in
active voice, the right answer choice is most probably in passive voice and vice versa. Still,
passive sentence may be confusing you. Thus, you need to be careful who does what.

Example 1

Women : “why were you so late in getting home from work?”

Man : “my boss had me finished all the month-end reports.”

Explanation : look at the statement of 2nd speaker ‘had me finished all…’. This is a passive
sentence. This statements mean that the man’s boss makes the man finish all the reports.
Therefore, the best answer for this is ‘the man was directed to work late until the job is done’.

Example 2

Man : “ms. Gabriel did not look to happy as she left her classroom”

Women : “she was angered by her rowdy students.”

Explanation : listen carefully again to the 2nd speaker. The woman speaks in passive sentence
“she was angered by her students”. This means the students causes her to be angry.

3. Who What, Where in Active Voice

In everyday life, we often prefer to build sentences that have an active voice. When we
describe the situations and actions we will tell from the perspective of the person or object
that acts, it is often correct to use active voice verbs. In such sentences, the subject is usually
the person who performs the action. Usually, the entity affected by the action is referred to as
an object.
Beginners learn English with active voice sentences. Because unlike other sentence types,
active voice sentences have a simpler structure.

2
The most important features of active voice sentences are that they reflect a clearer, harder
and stronger meaning to the reader.

Sentences built with an active voice make the person feel the effect of the action directly.
This is why we use active voice in our daily conversations in general. Now, let’s take a look
at a few dialogs that can be given as examples of active voice sentences.

Example 1

Gerrard : I love reading books. Would you like to offer me some books?

Lampard : Is that so? I love reading books too. There are a few books I’d like to offer you.

Have you read Da Vinci’s Code before?

Gerrard : No, I’ve never heard of this book. Reading this book might be a good idea.

Lampard : Exactly! I’d like to buy this book as a gift.

Gerrard : Thank you so much!

Explanation : In the first sentence of the dialogue, one says that he likes to read books.
Reading a book is something that the subject likes. Therefore, we can easily understand that
the active voice is used in this sentence.

In the continuation of the dialogue, the person used the phrase ‘’I’ve never heard of this
book’’. This is a sentence with negative and past perfect tense form. In this sentence, an
active voice structure is used. The person who has not read the book is the person who set up
the sentence.

3
Ending

Conclusion : In short conversations, questions about people, activities, and places are
frequently asked. Sometimes, the short conversations do not either clearly or directly state the
answers for this. However, you are insisted to be familiar to the questions. We must know it
and understand it.

Suggestion : If you want to make a Short Conversation, by using these words : I Think you
should.. Why don’t you.. and I Don’t think you should.
