Unit IV : Life Issues / Lesson 4: Ecodriving (part 2)

Terminal Objective:
By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to know what is meant by eco-driving and discuss the topic.

Enabling Objective:
• Watch a video and take notes to do a fill-in-the-blank exercise.
• Match the tips to the purposes.
• Fill in the blanks with the missing words.
• Write a talk on eco-driving.

Lexis:
tire, gears, to strangle, eco-driving, to maintain, economical, to economize, appliances, bill, efficiently, emission,
illuminate, smoothly, sparingly, congestion, reductive, liquefy, etc...

Language focus:
the use of “to / in order to / so as to / so that / so” ➔ to express purpose.

Let`s review to what we have seen in the 1st part of the lesson (Ecodriving part 1):

We are all concerned! We must reduce pollution and save the environment. Consumers have to adopt a new doctrine
basing on the principle that says :``Think globally and Act locally``

Top 10 ways to save on energy bills:

By making some small changes to how you use energy, you can save money and help the environment.

1/ Turn off your heater, cooling units and appliances when you go to bed or leave the house. Switch off your computer
and equipment such as printers or wifi routers overnight, or while you're away.

2/ Energy-efficient globes could save you up to 80 per cent off your lighting costs. LED bulbs use less power and last
longer. That means you spend less money and time replacing them.

3/ Using solar energy can help your household save money on energy bills. By using the solar electricity that you
generate, you can avoid buying energy from your retailer. Additionally, solar hot water systems can also help you avoid
gas charges often associated with a gas-fired water heater.
Activity 4 p.214:
- The text is targeted at the car owners.
- The text aims at warning people against the dangers of CO2 emissions and providing tips for driving car ecologically
(driving cars while protecting the environment by reducing CO2 emissions).
- You can help reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution by reducing the amount of fuel you use. This means walking,
cycling or taking the bus for short journeys can be good.

the 4 most important tips for ecodriving: (activity 5 p.215)

1/ drive smoothly and consistently using higher gears when you can.
2/ use your air conditioning sparingly
3/ switch off your engine when you're going to be stationary for more than a minute or two
4/ service the car regularly and maintain the right tyre pressure.

Lexical focus p.215: Activity 3 p.215 :

Activity 2 p.215 :
Find words in the text meaning nearly the same as:
a- discharge = outpouring = ejection = emission
b- effectively = efficiently
c- regularly = softly = smoothly
d- prudently = cautiously = sparingly
e- prematurely = too early = precipitately = ahead of time
f- tips = pieces of advice = a useful piece of information

efficiency (noun) ➔ efficient (adjective) ➔ efficiently (adverb)

- liquefy /ˈlɪk.wɪ.faɪ/ (verb) : to (cause a gas or a solid to) change into a liquid form

- congest /kənˈdʒest/ (verb) : to make something blocked or crowded in a way that causes difficulties.

- reductive /rɪˈdʌk.tɪv/ (adjective) : considering or presenting something in a simple way, especially a way that is too simple.

e.g.: reductive explanations of the origin of life.

2/ Essay: (Bac exam / June 2014)
