Quarter 3 WEEK 5
Taxonomy is the science of naming, describing and classifying organisms and includes all plants, animals and
microorganisms of the world. Using morphological, behavioural, genetic and biochemical observations,
taxonomists identify, describe and arrange species into classifications, including those that are new to
science.

Quarter 3 WEEK 6
Modern day organisms can provide clues about evolution. Fossils, patterns of early development, and
similar body structures all provide organisms have changed overtime. By comparing organisms,
scientists can infer how closely related the organism are in an evolutionary sense. Scientists compare body
structures, development before birth, and DNA sequences to determine the evolutionary relationships among
organisms.
Answer this:
1. The broadest or largest category of classification.
Domain
2. The smallest or most specific category is species.
3. All of these organisms except the dogwood tree are in the animal kingdom.
4. Which kingdom is the tree in?
Kingdom Plantae/Plant
5. Which kingdom is the lion in?
Kingdom Animalia/Animal
6. The second largest category is in the Phylum. Which phylum are we in?
Chordata
7. Which organisms are not in the same Phylum as humans?
Mosquito and dogwood tree
8. Which phylum is the tree in?
Magnoliophyta
9. Which class are turtles ?
Reptile
How about humans?
Mammalia.
10. After class, the next category is order. Are any of the organisms in the same order? If so, which ones?
They are the cat, lion, tiger and dog.
11. Humans are in the order primate, along with apes. It means being different from all other animals
because they are the only mammals that have the following combination of features; relatively large,
complex brain. Forward facing eyes with overlapping fields of view that allow depth perception.
12. The fifth category is family.
Are dogs and cats in the same family?
No
Are all cats in the same family?
Yes
Which one?
Felidae. ________.
13. The sixth category is genus. Animals in the same genus are very close related. Which animals share
the same genus?
Cat and lion.
14. The last and smallest category is called species. What is the species names for humans?
Sapiens
15. The scientific name consists of the genus and species. What is the scientific name of the following
organism? (write it correctly)
Humans homo sapiens
Mosquito Culicidae
Lion Panthera leo
Turtle testudines
