REPAIR PROCEDURE

PROJECT : Austenitic Manganese Steel Casting

MATERIAL GRADE : IS 276 Gr. 1, 2 and 3 or EQUIVALENT
SCOPE
This procedure address the Minor weld repair (permissible repair depth is the least of 25% of wall thickness or 25mm for
250 sq mm max. surface area ) or any surface weld builtup or attachment weld to Austenitic Managanese Steel Casting
after heat treatment with concurrence of QAC Engineer.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Welding consumable : ø3.15mm/4mm E307-16 for general repair and
Eutectrode400-EWAC, Duromangan-ESAB, LH7141-ADOR FONTECH for wear resistance
surface
Specific requirements : Low heat input, short arc length, stringer bead
Preheat Temperature : Not required
Interpass Temperature : 100 °C Maximum, Cool down welding before subsequent pass
PWHT : Not Required
Procedure :
1. First remove defects which revealed in VI or PT by grinding and ensure area is free from sharp edges, notches, oil,
grease, dust, sand and as cast surface or any impurities. Ensure no overheating during grinding.
2. Before start of welding, ensure proper baking of welding electrode as per manufacturer guidelines.
3. Welding should be done in stringer beads (weaving not allowed) with short arc length, use Low amperage 80-130
Amps with ø3.15mm/4mm Electrode
4. Use Skip or Back step welding to control interpass temperature limit of 100 °C Maximum
5. Check interpass temperature strickly by using thermal crayons or pyrometer
6. Surrounding area can be covered with moist gunny bag to contol interpass temperature during welding and after
welding to cool down final weld. The weld bead can be peened with ball pan hammer immediately final welding for
stress relieving.
7. Grind weld surface (without overheating of weld)enough to conduct PT to ensure material is sound.
8. Weld repairs shall be inspected to the same quality standards as are used in the inspection of the castings for final
acceptance.

Caution :
1. If remove risers, gates by flame or arc gouging then care shall be taken to cut at enough distance from the casting
body and to be cut before final heat treatment.
2. Manganese steel structure is succeptible to superficial fissure hair line cracks which revealed in PT, it is advise to
donot temper it and it is acceptable for ordinary service purpose unless severe impact, cyclic or tensile stresses are
involved in service. Any deep crack, hot tear visible to necked eye shall be repaired as per the procedure.
