Welcome
Welcome graduates, family members, friends and
honoured guests to the Imperial College London
Postgraduate Graduation. Today is a special day
for all of us, one that we will long cherish.
Congratulations to the recipients of the degrees, awards
and honours being conferred today. We are inspired by
your accomplishments and excited by your potential to do
even greater things in the future. You exemplify the talented
people who drive Imperial’s success.
I know how hard those of you receiving your postgraduate
degrees have worked and the sacrifices that you and your
families and friends have made to bring you to this day.
Your degree provides you with the opportunity to do
important work with interesting people, to expand your
intellectual horizons, to learn about different cultures
and to help make the world a better place.
Imperial’s work brings great value to society and this
impact is extended by our global network of partners.
I hope you take from this place a spirit of collaboration
and the ability to build and contribute to teams.
I also hope that you take a moment today to recognise the
contributions of your professors, your family and your friends
to your success. No matter how hard we work or how smart
we are, we all need guidance and support. As you move on in
your careers, you can pay back the support you received by
helping others and serving as their mentors and role models.
I wish you all the very best for the future. Whatever path you
choose, I hope you maintain your curiosity, continue to seek
out new challenges and apply your talents to improving the

SIR PHILIP DILLEY

Thank you for joining us today to celebrate the excellence

of our postgraduate students, to honour staff and students
who have made exceptional contributions to the College,
and to recognise colleagues from outside of Imperial through
honorary awards for contributions to their disciplines.

I have fond memories of when I crossed the stage of

the Royal Albert Hall as a graduand of Imperial, with my
friends and family watching. My degree in Civil Engineering
gave me the skills and confidence to embark on a career
that has taken me to countries across the globe. I am proud
to now serve as Chair of the College’s governing Council.

Imperial’s Royal Charter of 1907 gave our university

a distinct mandate focused on the application of education,
research and scholarship. For generations, those with
a degree from Imperial have made their mark in science,
technology, engineering, medicine, business and education.
Imperial graduates are an illustrious group.

To those graduating today, I would emphasise that

this is not the end of a journey, but the beginning of a
new chapter in your life. You have tackled advanced topics
in your fields, gained new knowledge through your projects
and research and furthered your ability to think critically.
You are poised to apply what you have learned and
make your mark in your chosen career.

You are also now part of the worldwide network of Imperial

alumni that is a source of guidance, support and friendship.
I encourage you to be an active part of this network over the
coming years. We alumni are proud of what you have achieved
and excited by the promise of your future achievements.

About the day
Graduations are a highlight of the College
year, a time when we welcome back our
graduating students, together with families
and friends, to celebrate outstanding
academic achievement.
Graduations for Imperial College London have taken
place in the Royal Albert Hall for over 60 years. The Hall,
which opened in 1871, was part of Prince Albert’s grand
vision for a cultural, scientific and artistic quarter in South
Kensington. Given that Imperial also has its origins in this
vision, it is fitting that the College should celebrate the
accomplishments of its graduates here.

The College coat of arms
The College coat of arms was assigned
by Royal Warrant on 6 June 1908. Coats
of arms date back to the twelfth century,
and continue to be used by well-established
and respected corporate bodies as a mark
of identification.
The shield incorporates the royal coat
of arms and a book, representing knowledge.
The motto, which reads Scientia imperii
decus et tutamen, can be translated as
‘Scientific knowledge, the crowning glory
and the safeguard of the empire’.
The Imperial Mace
The Imperial College London Mace was
presented to the College by the Goldsmiths’
Company in 2009 in recognition of Imperial’s
status as a university in its own right. The
generous gift reflects the livery company’s
longstanding relationship with Imperial
and its predecessor institutions.
The intricate design of the Mace incorporates
elements of the College’s coat of arms and
its motto. The helix-shaped stem represents
human DNA or a chain of atoms in a spiral,
providing a visual reference to the College’s
expertise in science and medicine.

The Mace is a focal point of the College’s
graduation ceremonies: it heralds the
arrival of the Provost, President and Chair The Imperial Mace

Academic dress has its origins in
medieval Europe, when it identified
the rank and profession of the wearer.
Today, academic dress denotes the
graduate’s institution and the level
of degree awarded.
The unifying theme of academic dress
at Imperial is the colour purple. This is an
homage to the work of Royal College of
Chemistry alumnus Sir William Henry Perkin,
who invented mauveine, the world’s first
synthetic purple dye, in 1856.
Master’s graduands wear black gowns
and black hoods with white and purple
lining. The coloured stripe on the collar
of the hood denotes Faculty affiliation.
MPhil graduands wear black gowns and
black hoods with purple lining. PhD, DEng,
MD and DSc graduands wear purple hoods
and purple gowns: the sleeves of PhD,
DEng and MD graduands are purple,
while those of DSc graduands are white.

 Past and future
Imperial’s past and future
For over 100 years, Imperial College London
has been at the forefront of scientific
discovery and innovation, a unique
institution dedicated to enduring excellence
in research and education.
Our history
Imperial was founded in 1907 with the merger of the Royal
School of Mines, the Royal College of Science and the City
and Guilds Central Technical College. During the latter half
of the nineteenth century, each institution had played a
crucial part in establishing science education and research in
Britain, employing some of the finest minds in their respective
areas of expertise. Each had also found a home in South
Kensington, an area which, under the patronage of Prince
Albert, had become a hub for science, culture and education.
The Royal Charter which formed the Imperial College of Science
and Technology described its remit as “giving the highest
specialised instruction, and providing the fullest equipment for
the most advanced training and research in various branches
of science, especially in its application to industry”. The College
swiftly began expanding its presence in South Kensington,
constructing an extension to the City and Guilds College, a new
building for the Royal School of Mines, and the Beit Buildings.
During the two world wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45,
thousands of Imperial students and staff volunteered for
service. On the home front, several of the College buildings
were commandeered by the government and military. Staff
and alumni undertook critical war-related scientific research
in fields including munitions, aeronautics and medicine.
The post-war period saw unprecedented growth at Imperial,
as science and technology were seen as increasingly critical
to facing the challenges of the twentieth century. New
disciplines were introduced, including nuclear science
and engineering, and computing and control.
After a series of mergers between the College and major
medical schools, the Imperial College School of Medicine
(now the Faculty of Medicine) was established in 1997. The
Business School was granted a status equivalent to a College
faculty in 2003, and a year later moved to its current location
with the opening of the College Main Entrance.
As the College approached its centenary, the decision was
made to withdraw from the University of London, a federation
of which Imperial had been a part since 1908. The College’s
independence was formalised in 2007, and the first students
to receive degrees of Imperial College London began their
degrees later that year.

Our future
Since 2007, Imperial College London has consolidated its
position as one of the world’s leading universities in the fields
of science, engineering, medicine and business. Imperial’s
strength in these core disciplines has allowed it to push the
boundaries of what a university can do, with the community
working together to solve major global challenges.
Academics and students at Imperial are at the forefront of
multidisciplinary research. They are supported by institutes
and initiatives that bring researchers from across the College
together. These include the Antimicrobial Research Collaborative,
the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment,
the Brevan Howard Centre for Financial Analysis, and the Energy
Futures Lab. Collaborations such as the Lee Kong Chian School
of Medicine in Singapore, which was established in 2010 with
Nanyang Technological University, have shown how partnerships
extend the impact of Imperial’s work. In the future, the College
will develop its partnerships with academic institutions,
industries, governments and schools across the globe.
As the world changes, so will Imperial’s education.
Building on recent initiatives such as the new curriculum
developed for the Dyson School of Design Engineering,
Imperial will embed its education in a research-led,
entrepreneurial environment and provide a broad range
of services and support for students beyond their studies.
Imperial’s newest campus at White City provides the College
with the opportunity to develop new partnerships, support
new areas of research, diversify revenue streams and give
students entrepreneurial experience. In 2016, the Translation
& Innovation Hub will open, providing facilities for close
collaboration with partner institutions and companies.
The Molecular Sciences Research Hub, with Chemistry
research facilities at its core, will open in 2018.

Here are just some of the figures
who shaped Imperial’s history
and changed the world during
their time at Imperial.
SIR WILLIAM HENRY PERKIN
In 1856, while studying at the Royal
College of Chemistry, Perkin discovered the
first coal tar dye, mauveine. His discovery
of the synthetic purple dye revolutionised
fabric colouring, bringing bright colours
to the masses for the first time, and
transformed the science of chemistry.
DR MARTHA ANNIE WHITELEY
Whiteley joined the Royal College
of Science as a teaching scholar in the
Department of Chemistry in 1904, and by
1920 had progressed to the role of Assistant
Professor. She was the first woman to hold
a position on the teaching staff at the
College, and was awarded the OBE in
1920 for the contribution of her research
in the First World War.
SIR ALEXANDER FLEMING
In the course of his research at St Mary’s
Hospital, Fleming discovered the fungal
mould penicillium notarum. His 1928
breakthrough, and the subsequent work
of Sir Ernst Chain and Sir Hugh Florey to
isolate and concentrate penicillin, was
recognised in 1945 with a Nobel Prize
for Physiology and Medicine.
SIR DEREK BARTON
Barton’s work on the spatial arrangements of
organic molecules and reactions mechanisms,
was undertaken while he was Professor of
Organic Chemistry between 1957 and 1972.
His research transformed how chemists think
about molecules in three-dimensional space,
and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for
Chemistry (with Odd Hassel) in 1969.
PROFESSOR JOAN WOODWARD
As a lecturer and subsequently professor
in Industrial Sociology, Woodward undertook
pioneering research into organisational
structures in technology and production
systems. Woodward Hall, a College Hall
of Residence which opened in 2015,
was named in her honour.
PROFESSOR DENIS GABOR
During the 1940s, Gabor began to experiment
with holography, a process which allows the
storage of propagating optical wavefronts for
later reconstruction. For this research, he was
awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1971,
the first engineer to receive the accolade.
PROFESSOR RODNEY ROBERT PORTER
Porter was Pfizer Professor of Immunology
at St Mary’s Hospital between 1960 and 1967,
during which time he conducted research
into the blood’s immunoglobin. In 1972,
he was awarded Nobel Prize for Medicine
of Physiology with G.M. Edelmen for their
work on determining the exact structure
of an antibody.

outstanding in their fields.
PROFESSOR JEAN TIROLE
Professor Jean Tirole is chairman of the Foundation
J.J. Laffont-Toulouse School of Economics and Scientific
Director of the Institute for Industrial Economics, University
of Toulouse Capitole. Previously, he was Professor of
Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
and he has served as President of the Econometric Society
and President of the European Economic Association.
Professor Tirole’s research covers industrial organisation,
regulation, finance, macroeconomics and psychology
and economics.
In 2014, Professor Tirole received The Sveriges Riksbank
Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for
his analysis of market power and regulation. He is also
a recipient of the European Economic Association’s Yrjö
Jahnsson Award; the National Center for Scientific Research’s
Gold Medal; the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge
Award in Economics, Finance and Management; the CME-
MSRI award; the Claude Levi-Strauss Prize; the Nemmers
Prize and the Stephen A. Ross Prize in Financial Economics.
Professor Tirole holds honorary doctorate degrees from
the Université Libre de Bruxelles, the University of London
(London Business School), the University of Montreal
(HEC), the University of Mannheim, the Athens University
of Economics and Business, the University of Rome Tor
Vergata, the Hitotsubashi University, the Université
de Lausanne, the University Luiss, Rome and the
European University Institute.

Awards and honours
DR PATRICK VALLANCE
Dr Patrick Vallance is President of R&D at GlaxoSmithKline
(GSK) and a member of the GSK Corporate Executive Team.
Prior to joining GSK, Dr Vallance was a clinical academic
and, as Professor of Medicine, led the Division of Medicine
at University College London.
Dr Vallance has worked in clinical medicine, general internal
medicine, cardiovascular medicine and clinical pharmacology
for over 20 years. He has an international reputation as a
vascular biologist and clinician scientist. His research has
spanned structural and molecular studies, in vitro and in vivo
experimental pharmacology and clinical studies including
the use of large-scale patient databases. At GSK, he has
transformed the discovery engine to focus on therapy areas
that are underpinned by the most promising and mature
science, and which offer fresh insights into diseases. He is
also responsible for driving the success of potential new
medicines by creating small, empowered research teams,
called Discovery Performance Units. This new approach has
led to a new wave of medicines for diseases from malaria
through to cancer treatments. He has championed open
innovation and transparency of clinical trial results.
Dr Vallance was elected to the Academy of Medical
Sciences in 1999 and subsequently became its Registrar
before leaving to join GSK. He has been on the Board of
the UK Office for Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research
since 2009 and is a member of the Board of the Agency for
Science, Technology & Research. He is also a director
of Genome Research Limited.

PROFESSOR DONALD HILL PERKINS

Professor Donald Hill Perkins CBE FRS is an Emeritus
Professor at the University of Oxford. He was educated at
Imperial College London, where he received a BSc and PhD.
He went on to work at Bristol University, and the Lawrence
Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley (now the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory). He later conducted research at CERN
and was Professor of Elementary Particle Physics at the
University of Oxford, where he founded the Department
of Nuclear Physics with Professor Kenneth Allen.

Professor Perkins is renowned for his work in the field

of particle physics. His earliest achievements include
the discovery of the negative pion in cosmic radiation.
At Berkeley, he worked with accelerators on K-mesons
and the annihilation of protons and antiprotons, and is
also recognised for implementing the use of neutrinos
as a tool to elucidate the quark structure on the nucleon.
In the applied field, he worked on the design of the HERA
storage ring at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in
Hamburg, and conducted research into cancer therapy
with pions. His book, Introduction to High Energy Physics,
is a global standard work on particle physics.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and has honorary

doctorates from Bristol University and Sheffield University.
He is a recipient of the Guthrie Medal and Prize of the
Institute of Physics; the Holweck Prize of the Institut Français
de Physique; the Royal Medal of the Royal Society; and the
High Energy and Particle Physics Prize of the European
Physical Society.

The Imperial College Medal is
awarded for meritorious or praiseworthy
service to the College or for having
otherwise enhanced its reputation,
mission and objectives.
PROFESSOR GEOFFREY HEWITT
Professor Geoffrey (Geoff) Hewitt is
Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering
in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
He founded the Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow
Service at Harwell Laboratory, now part of the
Harwell Science and Innovation Campus.
Professor Hewitt’s research explores
multiphase flow systems, such as the flow of
oil, water and natural gas mixtures in North Sea
pipelines, and has had a significant impact
on the design of pipelines in industry. He is
a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering,
the Royal Society and the US National Academy
of Engineering. He is the recipient of the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers’
Donald Q. Kern Award and the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Max Jacob
Memorial Award. He has honorary degrees from
the University of Louvain, Belgium, Heriot-Watt
University and the University of Manchester
Institute of Science and Technology.
His research and publication record have
helped to establish Imperial’s reputation in
multiphase flow systems. Professor Hewitt is
also a committed teacher of undergraduate and
postgraduate engineers. He has supervised
the PhD theses of over 50 students.

PROFESSOR DAVID MILES
Professor David Miles is Professor of Financial
Economics at Imperial College Business
School. He joined the College in 1996 as Chair
in Finance and led the growing Business
School Finance Department until 2004.
Professor Miles’ research focuses on
financial markets; financial stability and
banking; and the interactions between
markets and the wider economy. He has
served two terms as a member of the Bank
of England’s Monetary Policy Committee and
was a non-executive director of the Financial
Services Authority. Previous positions also
include President of the Economics Section
of the British Science Association, a member
of the Council of the Royal Economic Society
and a governor of the National Institute
for Economic and Social Research. He was
appointed Commander of the Order of
the British Empire in the 2016 New Year’s
Honours for services to monetary policy.
Among his numerous contributions to
Imperial, Professor Miles was a founder
member of the College Fund Board (now the
Endowment Board), and he developed the
internationally renowned MSc in Finance
offered by the Business School.
MR BOB PARISH
Mr Bob Parish was Services Coordinator
in the Faculty Services team at Imperial
College Business School until his retirement
in December 2015. He provided support to
colleagues and students throughout the
Business School for over 25 years.
Mr Parish began at Imperial as an electrician
and member of the maintenance staff.
Over the course of his career he took on
more responsibility, tackling an increasingly
broad range of work and becoming a key
figure within the Faculty Services team.
The diversity of Mr Parish’s role required
a flexible and pragmatic approach. He was
known for his ability to solve problems,
fix things and make things work well,
whether it was setting up an office for
a new professor or supporting teaching
through lecture theatre preparation
and audio visual support.
Mr Parish played a particularly major
role when the Business School moved to
its current location and again when the
Business School relocated its Finance
Department to 53 Princes Gate.
Awards and honours
DR LYNDA WHITE
Dr Lynda White is Principal Teaching
Fellow in Experimental Design in the
Department of Mathematics. She joined
the Department in 1971, and has since
served as Admissions Tutor in Mathematics
and as departmental Senior Tutor. In 2012,
she accepted an appointment as a College
Tutor, a role she continues to fulfil.
Dr White’s research interests are in
experimental design, statistics and
randomisation. She has won several awards
for her teaching, including being named
Lecturer of the Year at the Science Engineering
and Technology Student of the Year Awards
2006. She was also presented with a
Rector’s Award for Excellence in Pastoral
Care in 2010 and the Imperial College
Teaching Fellow award in 2008.
Beyond her teaching and pastoral
responsibilities, Dr White has made
many contributions to the wider College
community. She has used her statistical
research to design numerous experiments
for other departments across the College
and was also involved in the design and
analysis of the TOAST, Imperial’s online
surveys of academic staff time.

The President’s Medals are awarded to
recognise staff members who have made
outstanding contributions to research,
external engagement, innovation, and
research support or supervision.
Outstanding Early Career
Researcher
DR SORAIA PIMENTA
Dr Soraia Pimenta is a Lecturer in the
Department of Mechanical Engineering
and recipient of a Royal Academy of
Engineering postdoctoral fellowship.
Dr Pimenta’s research is focused on
understanding and modelling the mechanics
of discontinuous composites for large-volume
applications, such as the automobile industry.
She is a recipient of the Schliekelmann
Award from the Society for the Advancement
of Material and Process Engineering and
the Tsai Award for the best student paper at
the International Conference on Composite
Materials and the Hayashi Memorial
International Award from the Japan Society
for Composite Materials.
Dr Pimenta has secured a number of
high-profile research grants and established
an international network of academic and
industry collaborators. Alongside building
a successful research group and educating
undergraduate and research students,
Dr Pimenta also engages in public
engagement and outreach activities.

PROFESSOR
RICHARD JARDINE
Professor Richard Jardine took his Chair
in Geomechanics at Imperial College London
in 1998. He acted as Head of Geotechnics
until 2011 and was Consul for Engineering
and the Business School until 2015.
He is currently Deputy Head of Civil
and Environmental Engineering.
His research covers offshore geotechnics,
soil characterisation, field instrumentation,
soft ground engineering, geohazards and
the impact of climate change on permafrost.
His current collaboration with University
College Dublin, Grenoble Tech, Norwegian
Geotechnical Institute, Oxford and Zhejiang
Universities focuses on offshore foundations.
He sits on six international committees, has
published over 200 papers, has won multiple
international research prizes and delivered
the 2016 Rankine Lecture.
He is a Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow
and has been a visiting professor in Singapore,
Japan and now China as a Ministry of
Education Overseas Distinguished Professor.

PROFESSOR PETER BARNES
Professor Peter Barnes is Professor of
Thoracic Medicine and Head of Respiratory
Medicine at the National Heart and Lung
Institute, and Honorary Consultant Physician
at Royal Brompton Hospital, London.
Professor Barnes’ research has identified
novel therapeutic targets for chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD) and severe asthma.
He has published over 1,000 peer-reviewed
papers on asthma, COPD and related topics
and is amongst the top 20 most highly cited
researchers in the world. He served on the
Scientific Committee of the Global Initiative
for Asthma and the Global Initiative for Chronic
Obstructive Lung Disease. He was elected
a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2007.
Professor Barnes has been successful in
bringing innovations from his research into
the pharmaceutical industry. His spin-
out company Respivert, set up within the
Bioincubator at Imperial, successfully exploited
and translated his research to develop
promising new inhaled drugs for asthma
that are currently undergoing clinical trials.

PROFESSOR BEATE
KAMPMANN
Professor Beate Kampmann is Professor
of Paediatric Infection, Immunity and
International Child Health in the
Department of Medicine.
Professor Kampmann’s main area of research
is paediatric tuberculosis, including HIV-
co-infection and vaccinology. Her team also
conducts laboratory and clinical studies into
age-related immune responses to infection
and vaccination. She heads the Vaccinology
theme at the Medical Research Council Unit
in The Gambia, where she leads a team of
over 80 staff to conduct research and clinical
trials in tuberculosis, infant immunology
and molecular diagnostics. She also has
close involvement with the clinical services
for children with infectious diseases at the
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
Professor Kampmann is a strong advocate
for women in academic medicine and a
committed supervisor. Her ‘Open Lab’
approach has facilitated the exchange
of ideas between her research teams
at Imperial and in The Gambia.

THE IMPERIAL COLLEGE FINITE
ELEMENT PROGRAM TEAM
The Imperial College Finite Element Program (ICFEP) team
has played a pivotal role in the research area of advanced
geotechnical numerical analysis since its establishment
over 30 years ago. The team is led by Professor David Potts,
the Geotechnical Consulting Group (GCG) Professor of
Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering.
The ICFEP team has developed a range of innovative
numerical methods for solving practical problems in
civil engineering. ICFEP is widely recognised in the civil
engineering community as the most sophisticated software
for geotechnical analysis and has become an essential
element of Imperial’s research infrastructure, enabling
theoretical research to be translated into practice. The software
has been used to assist in the design of many landmark
projects, such as the Jubilee Line Extension, Crossrail
and the stabilisation of the leaning Tower of Pisa.
Alongside Professor Potts, the other four academic members
of the team are: Professor Lidija Zdravkovic, Professor of
Computational Geomechanics and Head of the Geotechnics
Section; Dr Stavroula Kontoe, Senior Lecturer in Geotechnics;
Dr David Taborda and Dr Aikaterini Tsiampousi, both Lecturers
in Geotechnics. The principal industrial supporter of the team
is GCG, which has been one of the main vehicles for practical
application of the research developed at Imperial.

Outstanding Research Team
RESPIRATORY GENE THERAPY TEAM
The Respiratory Gene Therapy Team conducts research into
gene therapy for cystic fibrosis (CF) and other respiratory
diseases. Led by Professor Eric Alton, the team also
includes Professor Jane Davies as Clinical Lead, Professor
Uta Griesenbach as Scientific Lead, Tracy Higgins as Project
Manager and 27 other academic and support staff.
Among its many achievements, the team has brought together
and led the UK Cystic Fibrosis Gene Therapy Consortium, which
coordinates the work of CF translational gene therapy scientists
and clinicians across the UK. The Consortium raised around
£40 million in a translational programme designed to determine
whether repeated administration of gene therapy can improve
symptoms of the disease. The Consortium includes Imperial
College London, Oxford University and Edinburgh University,
the NHS Trusts of Royal Brompton and Harefield and NHS
Lothian, Imperial Innovations and two industrial partners.
Significant achievements by the team include the world’s
first trials of non-viral CF gene therapy in the nose and lungs
of patients, and the first Phase 2b clinical trial demonstrating
that repeated application of gene therapy can stabilise
lung disease in CF.
The team also pioneered a simple diagnostic test for CF in
worldwide use and led the field in developing novel biomarkers
for CF. The team have delivered plenary talks at major CF
conferences across the USA, Europe and Australia.

Research Support Excellence
DR SARAH BUTCHER
Dr Sarah Butcher is Head of the Bioinformatics
Support Service within the Department of
Surgery and Cancer. She previously worked
at and then managed the Oxford University
Bioinformatics Centre.
Dr Butcher’s main research interests include
the practical application of e-science
methodologies in bioinformatics, genome
annotation and large-scale data management
and integration for bioinformatics and
systems biology. She leads a team of six
bioinformaticians and software developers,
providing the bioinformatics core facility for
Imperial College London and its collaborators.
Dr Butcher supports and collaborates with
researchers across all of Imperial’s faculties.
She has been instrumental to the successful
awarding of numerous grant applications
including the MRC-funded UK Med-Bio
project. Other initiatives she has contributed
to include the EU initiative ‘Infrastructure
for Systems Biology Europe’, which was
at the forefront of the decision-making
processes for systems biology infrastructure
requirements across Europe.

Research Support Excellence
MS ANUSHA
SRI-PATHMANATHAN
Ms Anusha Sri-Pathmanathan is
Operations Manager in the Department
of Chemical Engineering.
Ms Sri-Pathmanathan has worked within the
Department for over a decade. During this
time she has helped to facilitate the five-fold
expansion in the Department’s research
volume and the associated growth in financial,
operational and personnel work. She has
pioneered the use of a research database and
associated tools for planning and reporting
to support Principal Investigators in tracking
the management of projects. She has also
developed a research projector tool to improve
the forecasting of research expenditure.
She took a leading role in the preparation
of the Department’s submission to the
Research Excellence Framework.
Alongside her internally focused work,
Ms Sri-Pathmanathan has taken the initiative
in developing external relationships –
for example, she has organised an annual
Departmental Sponsors’ Dinner for the
last five years.
Research Support Excellence
DR ANDREW WHITE
Dr Andrew White is the Crystallography Service
Manager in the Department of Chemistry.
He has worked in the Crystallography Service
for over 20 years.
Dr White’s role is focused on collecting
and analysing X-ray diffraction data from
a wide range of samples. However, he
often goes above and beyond the remit
of his job, providing advice and training to
students, and explaining the techniques
used in analysing their samples in depth.
As well as his innovative approach to
analysis, he contributes to the writing of
scientific publications and reports, and has
co-authored around 750 publications with
members of the Department of Chemistry
and many groups around the world.
Dr White takes a proactive approach to
ensuring that any data collected is properly
processed and published, and his attention
to detail has ensured the efficient running
of the Crystallography Service.

Medal
The Julia Higgins Medal recognises
individuals and departments that
have made a significant contribution
to the support of academic women
at the College.
PROFESSOR DOROTHY GRIFFITHS
Professor Dorothy (Dot) Griffiths is the Provost’s
Envoy for Gender Equality at Imperial and Chair
of Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust.
She was formerly Deputy Dean and then Dean of the
Imperial College Business School. She was a founding
editor of Feminist Review and is now Chair of the
Feminist Review Trust.
Professor Griffiths has consulted widely in the area
of human resource management for major international
organisations. Her current interests are in the area of
talent acquisition and talent development. She has
also worked on quality measures for human resources
performance. She is a member of the Higher Education
Academy. In 2004 she was elected a Fellow of the
City and Guilds of London Institute. In 2010 she was
awarded an OBE for Services to Higher Education
and made a Fellow of the RSA.
Professor Griffiths has championed the role of women
in management, science and technology throughout her
career, and has led a number of activities in this area
on behalf of Imperial, including her present role.
This award is named in honour of Professor Dame
Julia Higgins, Senior Investigator in the Department of
Chemical Engineering and former Dean of the City and
Guilds College and Principal of the Faculty of Engineering.

MS ANGELA DE
MANZANOS
Ms Angela de Manzanos (facing page, left)
is a final-year PhD student in the Department
of Chemistry. Along with fellow student Dr
Kerry O’Donnelly Weaver, she is co-founder
of FungiAlert, which offers a simple and
inexpensive early detection device for soil-
borne plant pathogens and can alert farmers
about the risk of crop infection remotely via
a wireless chip. The device has won multiple
awards, including the CDT Den 2015 prize
and the Imperial Showcase Venture Catalyst
Challenge, and the team were also runners
up in the Althea-Imperial prize. FungiAlert
has received significant press coverage,
including from BBC Radio 4, The Times
of India and Thomson Reuters.
Ms de Manzanos is committed to outreach,
and in particular encouraging girls to study
science. She helps to run a science club
in Brixton, and she has also mentored at
outreach events and given talks to groups
of female students.

DR KERRY O’DONNELLY
WEAVER
Dr Kerry O’Donnelly Weaver (facing page,
right) completed her PhD from the
Department of Chemistry in 2015. Alongside
Ms Angela de Manzanos, she is a co-founder
of FungiAlert. The success of FungiAlert
has provided the team with opportunities
to interact many customers and potential
industrial collaborators, including Syngenta,
Sainsbury’s, Bayer and BASF, as well being
invited to speak at conferences, including
Sainsbury’s Farming Scholars Programme
Workshop and the International Conference
on Plant Chemical Biology at Syngenta.
Dr O’Donnelly Weaver was selected as
one of the 175 faces of Chemistry by the
Royal Society of Chemistry in 2015 due
to her expertise in food production and
crop security. During her time at Imperial,
she competed and won several high-profile
entrepreneurship competitions for early-
stage career researchers, including as a
member of a team in the 2011 Syngenta
‘Thought For Food Challenge’.

resistance research.
Postgraduate study at Imperial is unique – and uniquely
demanding. It requires dedication, hard work and a sustained
intellectual effort, over many months or years. You have risen
to that challenge and you have excelled. I am honoured to
have this opportunity to celebrate with you today, and
to offer my sincere congratulations.

In the Faculty of Natural Sciences, one of our great

strengths is our people. Our academic staff are among the
world’s very best. Our students and researchers are talented,
driven and exceptionally bright. As a community we come
together to transcend departmental boundaries, pooling
our talents to find the best solutions to some of the
greatest challenges of our time.

It is this collaborative spirit that underpins our great

achievements. For example, during your time here, we saw
researchers from the multi-disciplinary Institute of Chemical
Biology develop a new artificial cell that replicates the way
nature stores cell contents in separate compartments, with
potential to improve the way drugs are delivered. We build
on this collaborative approach through initiatives like the
Antimicrobial Research Collaborative, where researchers
from the Faculty of Natural Sciences are working with
colleagues across the College to tackle antibiotic resistance,
one of the world’s major health threats.

As postgraduate students, you were a vital part of this

extraordinary community. As alumni, your connection
endures. I encourage you to keep in touch. Explore our
programme of lectures. Make use of our alumni networks.

as a volunteer or donate to support those who follow in

Dr Aderin-Pocock is a space
NICOLA POGSON, DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI RELATIONS scientist, science communicator
and presenter of the BBC’s The
Sky at Night. She is Managing
Director of Science Innovation
Ltd, through which she organises
public engagement activities
for children and adults.

When I was graduating, I thought careers were

to Imperial’s alumni community. As you cross the stage
of the Royal Albert Hall, you will join a powerful and lifelong
global network of more than 180,000 leaders and innovators –
this connection will endure far beyond the years you have
spent on campus.
Wherever your path takes you after today, your life will

I am fully convinced of the potential that a vibrant and
connected community holds for both the College and its
alumni. This is reflected in Imperial’s five-year strategy,
which recognises the importance of our staff, students,
alumni and friends in helping humanity address the
changes and challenges ahead.
Whilst recognising the many achievements of our community
to date, we want to build a more globally connected network.
Over the last six months, working closely with our international
groups, our President has attended alumni receptions in
China, Malaysia, Singapore, USA and India. Closer to home,
alumni have attended events around the UK, and hundreds
will join us for the Alumni Weekend at the Imperial Festival.
One of the key themes that emerged from these events
was the need to build stronger links between different
generations, ensuring that recent alumni benefit from the
expertise, career insights, knowledge and connections of
alumni well established in their careers. In response to this
feedback, we are developing a recent graduates programme,
which will feature workshops and networking events tailored
to your needs. Do keep an eye out for more information
on this programme later in the year.
As you embark on the next step of your journey, I hope
you will remember your Imperial connections. By keeping in

frontiers in bridge engineering.

(PhD Clinical Medicine Research, 1998)
Dr Jacobs is clinical lead in
infectious diseases at the Royal
Free London NHS Foundation
Trust. He treated UK patients who
contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone.
Research is such an
important part of medicine and
there’s an expectation that we should all be at the
cutting edge. The process of research, evolution and
interpretation is crucial in my job and my PhD taught
me that as well as patience, diligence and resilience.”

Mr Okeke is Chief Operating
Officer at Azura Power, which
aims to provide electricity to
millions of people across Africa.
The part of my work I
enjoy the most is knowing that
I am helping governments and
utilities solve their infrastructural problems. I get a
real sense of joy when a part of a country that until
now didn’t have electricity suddenly gets connected.”
