 INTRODUCTION
THE JARDINE FOUNDATION WAS SET UP IN 1982 TO MARK
THE 150 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JARDINE MATHESON
GROUP. THE EDUCATIONAL TRUST PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS
TO OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITIES FOR STUDENTS
FROM THE COUNTRIES WHERE THE JARDINE MATHESON
GROUP HAS OPERATIONS.

The Jardine Foundation’s goal is to develop future leaders who aspire to

give back to the communities where we operate. Scholarships are available
for courses at Oxford and Cambridge, with preference being given to
undergraduate courses at the following Colleges:

In addition to scholarships for undergraduate courses, the Foundation also

offers scholarships for postgraduate studies. Potential candidates will
generally be recommended through the preferred colleges at Oxford and
Cambridge from those students who have already been accepted by the
Universities to carry out postgraduate studies.

Since the launch of the Foundation, scholarships have been awarded to

and Vietnam.

The Jardine Foundation provides excellent opportunities for outstanding
young persons to benefit from the unique qualities of an Oxbridge
education. The Scholarship Committee is delighted to note that over
370 Jardine Scholarships have now been awarded to extraordinary
individuals from 11 countries.

Within the Oxbridge collegiate system, students of all disciplines benefit

from the free exchange of ideas and experiences at their college, within

TO ACHIEVE OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC STANDARDS. THE
FOUNDATION ALSO VALUES INDIVIDUALS WHO DEMONSTRATE
LEADERSHIP, COMPASSION AND A SOLID CONNECTION TO THE

KHOI LE NGUYEN NGUYEN

COURSE OF STUDY: NATURAL SCIENCES (PHYSICAL)

Always passionate about physics, I had
dreamed of becoming a physicist coming
from a lower middle-class family. I realised
my dream when the Jardine Foundation
awarded me the prestigious Scholarship. I am
grateful for the Foundation’s support through
organising workshops aimed at improving
leadership qualities.
Looking back, I am beyond humbled with the
Foundation having helped with my path to
becoming a physicist. I enjoyed every moment
of my first two years at Cambridge, and hope
to contribute to the betterment of lives of those
around me, through inventions or discoveries,
or as simple as providing education to less
privileged communities.

DOMINIC LI
COURSE OF STUDY: HISTORY

The Jardine Foundation Scholarship has
enriched my formative experience at university
in so many ways. Through networking events, I
met scholars across colleges and universities,
many of whom have become lifelong friends.
Internship opportunities for undergraduates
were offered, and allowed me to explore
career options while bonding with scholars
from around the world. I remember fondly the
time spent with fellow scholars at the ramp
services at the Hong Kong airport, unloading
luggage from airplanes under the summer
heat!
Coming from a high school in Hong Kong that
sends few graduates to Oxbridge, I had not
expected to be awarded the Scholarship. The
application process may seem daunting, not
least because it coincides with the Oxbridge
application; but in hindsight it was a brilliant
learning opportunity, and provided good practice
for the (many) interviews one inevitably goes
through in their career. A passion for your subject
and plan for making an impact in the future
should put you in good stead as an applicant.
 CHARLES HE
COURSE OF STUDY:
Having migrated with my parents from
Northwestern China to Shanghai at the age
of 7, I worked hard at local schools, aiming
to go to a good university through Gaokao.
Studying abroad would put a significant strain
on the family’s finances, not without help of a
scholarship.
The Foundation was extremely accommodating.
Through its partnership with the Shuping
Scholarships, and affiliated Colleges in
Cambridge, I was able to apply with my Gaokao
results alone.
ALICE WANG
COURSE OF STUDY:
I come from a middle-class family in Shanghai
and attended both local public schools.
Little had I thought of studying abroad, and
universities as Cambridge and Oxford. My
journey as a Jardine Scholar enabled me to
pursue my interest at Cambridge, and allowed
me to meet a new world and better version of
myself.
I am grateful to Jardine for its financial support,
and the sense of belonging to the Jardine family
through its amazing network of scholars and
alumni across East and South-East Asia, and the

Cambridge was a life-changing experience.
Formal Halls, May Balls, Tripos, boat races, few
universities have such a rich and immersive
tradition. Moreover, I made friends with not only
classmates, but professors, who became great
companions and mentors in my career.
Education has a transformative power on
people’s lives. I’m truly grateful for the
Foundation’s generosity, and look forward to
seeing more Scholars joining this prestigious
family.
ENGINEERING

team. I was offered to intern at various
companies within the Group, and invited to
networking events where I met scholars, alumni
and senior leadership from the Group. I remained
in contact with some good friends I met.
The Scholarship has inspired me to give back
with the knowledge and skills I gained, and
volunteered in various outreach activities such as
the Cambridge Science Fair, Robot Club at local
schools, and the Introduction to Manufacturing
day-course for primary school students.
 GABRIELLE LAU
COURSE OF STUDY:
I was deeply honored to become a Jardine
Scholar after a well-organised application
and selection process. I applied to the
Postgraduate Scholarship through Magdalene
College. The final stage was a video
conference interview with a panel of Oxbridge
professors and Scholarship committee
members.
The Scholarship made it possible for me
to pursue a postgraduate education at
Cambridge, and conduct machine learning
research to develop machine-intelligent
solutions and improve social equity. With
IRENE LI
COURSE OF STUDY:
I grew up in mainland China before moving
to the UK to continue my education. I took
the Natural Sciences Tripos at Cambridge,
followed by the well-known Part III Master
of Mathematics course. During this time I
became interested in the statistical physics
of soft matter, particularly its applications to
biological systems.
As an international student, often
opportunities for funding were rare and highly
competitive. At this time I became aware of
the Jardine Foundation as a source of funding
to specifically aid students with similar

AND MACHINE INTELLIGENCE
Jardine’s support, I had the chance to learn
from leaders in the field of machine learning
through a holistic curriculum, and conduct
research on mitigating gender bias in natural
language generation systems for my dissertation.
Intellectual discussions with course mates,
fellow scholars and alumni also played a role in
opening doors to my dream career.
I am really grateful for the Jardine Scholarship
and this life-changing learning experience. With
the increased knowledge the course has granted
me, I will help people in need with machine
learning software in the near future.
PHD IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS
AND THEORETICAL PHYSICS

support, I am able to pursue a PhD in the area
of my interests and gain a strong foundation
for an academic career. The Jardine Foundation
has been especially supportively throughout my
PhD, particularly in my short-term participation
in the Royal Society’s response to the ongoing
coronavirus pandemic. The regular networking
events organised by the Jardine Foundation
have allowed me to keep in touch with my
fellow scholars, and make new contacts. I am
very grateful for the privilege of being a Jardine
scholar, and all the opportunities it has provided.
 LHURI DWIANTI RAHMARTANI
COURSE OF STUDY:
Pursuing a PhD at Oxbridge is not an affordable
dream for most people, even for someone who
comes from a rather privileged background like
myself. I’m lucky to become a Jardine Scholar
and a chance to study at the University of Oxford.
My experience with the Jardine Scholarship has
been fantastic. The application and selection
process were straightforward and efficient. The
board members are very supportive, and the

scholarship expects you to give back to the
society, it is bond-free and gives you the full
academic freedom to conduct research and
advance your career.
I hope more individuals can benefit from this
