Early Life and Career
▪ Admitted to the university of Wisconsin madison in 1886
▪ Joined phe delta theta fraternity took part time classes for
2 sem
▪ Worked with Allan D. Conover
▪ Worked as a draftsman with the architectural firm of
Joseph Lyman Silsbee
▪ After that worked in an architectural firm of Dankmar
Adler and Louis Sullivan
▪ Worked under Sullivan until 1893
▪ He opened his own architectural practice

▪ Interiors are vibrant because of Triadic colours for furniture

Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-French architect,


designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of
October 6, 1887- August 27, 1965 the pioneers. Born in switzwerland and became

French citizen in 1930
Philosopy
o The Pilotis – a grid of columns to replace
load-bearing walls, allowing architects to
make more use of floorspace.
o Free floor plans – flexible living spaces that
could adapt to changing lifestyles, thanks to
the absence of load-bearing walls.
o Roof gardens – a flat roof covered in
vegetation, which keeps moisture consistent

o Horizontal windows – cut through non load-


bearing walls, these strips provide even light
and panoramic views.
o Free facades – open and closed sections that
allow the facade to actively connect or
separate interior and exterior design
elements.

and laid foundation to what is known as bhauhas
movement or international style
o Known for innovation in urban planning
o Known for low income housing solutions.
o Had projects in Russia, India, Europe and Usa too.
o Formed five points of architecture.

o 1907- worked under Auguste Perette at Paris
o 1908- studied architecture in Vienna
o During world war he came up with Domino House
o 1918-1922 developed purist painting with ozenfants.
o Made a series of villas
o Deleved into city planning and designed chandigarh

Palace of Assembly
▪ Assembly was conceived as a rectilinear structure.
▪ Square in plan with a monumental portico facing the main
plaza
▪ On the lateral facades both the portico and the office block
would be defined by solid end walls
▪ The large chamber is in hyperbolic form of the cooling
tower with an average thickness of 15 cms
