I. Title
Computer Hardware
II. Objectives
At the end of this module, the learners should be able to,
a. Identify the different functional part of the computer; and
b. Enumerate the different parts of peripheral computer.
III. Lesson Content
Computer hardware is the physical part of the computer that can be seen and touched. It refers to the
external (monitor, mouse, keyboard, and so on) and internal part (hard disk, graphic cards, motherboard and
chips) that constitutes the computer system. Each of this hardware has its own function and importance in the
machine as a whole.
Computer Parts and Peripherals
A computer has four main parts and different peripherals that can be attached to it to make it more
functional. Each of this hardware has its own function and operation in the computer system. It is classified into
different types according to size, design, and usability.
Computer Parts Functions
Monitor Display (output device) Monitor- is a screen that makes information visual in electronic form. It
comes in different types and sizes.
Keyboard Type-writer-style Keyboards- keys and buttons are arrange just like the type-writer. Each
Device (input device) press corresponds to a single character.
Mouse Pointing Device (input Computer Mouse- is a pointing device. It is placed on a flat surface and
device) can move the on-screen cursor to the icons and folders on the screen. You
can move the mouse applying the following actions:
a. drag
b. point
c. click (left button)
d. point-click-drag-drop
e. scroll(roller)
System Unit (Processing device) System Unit-is the house of the motherboard, CPU, memory chips, and
devices that performs operation and produce output for complex
calculations.
The rear part contains the plug and ports used to connect the peripheral
devices.

Computer Peripherals
A peripheral device is supplementary device. Computer can work and run even without these devices.
They are not part of the computer. Peripherals can be connected and removed when not in used.

It produces a hard copy (permanent human-readable Copy) from a stored
data in a computer Connected to it.
Scanner (input/output Device) Scanner is a device that turns images and text into data that you can save,
edit, enhance, and print from your computer. Scanners use optical character
recognition or OCR on text documents.
Internal/External Hard Disk Drive (HDD)- is a storage device used for saving and
Hard Disk retrieving data. It is internal if it is inside the CPU casing. It is external if it

(storage device) Flash drive- is a small-sized storage device. It has the same function as the
HDD and they only differ in size and storage capacity.
Memory Card (storage device) Memory card- is a device used to store digital information. It is used in
mobile phones, MP3 players, game consoles, video cameras, and digital
cameras as a storage device. A card reader is used to read the data on this
device. There are also some computers (laptop) who has a built-in memory
card reader.

is used to record sounds and convert it into a file that can be used to attach
in a presentation or in a video.
Web Camera (input/output Web camera- is a device that feeds or streams its image in real time
device) through a Computer.
Digital Camera (input/output Digital camera is a handheld camera that can be attached on the computer.

Modem (communication device) Modem- is used to Convert digital data to analogue in order to transmit
over telephone network. It can be internal and external.
Wi-Fi Card (communication Wi-Fi Card- is used to connect the Computer in the wireless network. This
device) card will enable communication from the server and other Computers.
