ASSESSMENT:
1. What do you mean by identification and evaluation process in Special Education?
Identification and Evaluation (Placement) process are methods that are instituted in Special
Education to be able to locate and establish identity of each individual with special needs.
Identification and evaluation process were created to be able to give teachers, parents, school
administrators, related services, personnel and students opportunities to further develop and
improve educational systems by working together to come up with a better result as Special
Education is implemented.
Additionally, the process includes; Referral/Child Find, Evaluation, Identification, IEP and
Placement. The process provides documentation of efforts and various strategies tried in the
said program. Furthermore, it allows for consistent and thorough process for the staff to follow in
which the evaluation team reviews existing records, accumulated information and additional
screenings that may need to be completed in order to provide appropriate direction for the
students to be successful in the educational curriculum.

2. Explain how these processes are important to special education.

Given the fact that identification and evaluation process is a systematize procedure which
aimed to establish identity of every unique individual, its character or role being portrayed upon
the implementation of special education is beyond measure. Indeed, it is an played an important
in special education for it helps understand how students is identifies as having disability and
needing special education and other related services.
Evaluation and identification process is/are to assure that students who are experiencing
difficulties in school academically, functionally, or behaviorally are properly identified and
provided with the appropriate support services. In fact, as stated in the first process where, two
ways to identify if a Child Needs Special Education; Child Find and Referral or Request for
Evaluation--the first step is important for it allows to locate and evaluate all the children with
disabilities to identify who needs special education and related services. And also, (Referral or
Request for Evaluation) school professional are tasked to evaluate a child if he/she has
disability, this may request writing and verbal request. Next is, the child is evaluated. Here, it
played huge importance for it evaluates the child’s suspected disability and results are used to
deicide about an appropriate service to be given of course with the help of evaluation team.
Third, “Eligibility is decided.” Professionals decide if the child is a child with disability and
parents are informed with the decision and are heard for their thought regarding the matter.
Fourth, “The Child is found eligible for Service” here the child is being evaluated as “child with
disability” and is identified of what specific service is be given. Fifth, “An IEP meeting is
scheduled” this process aims to contact the participants including the parents. Made sure that
everything is up for the meeting. Sixth, “The IEP meeting is held is written” related services are
discussed and parents are asked about their concerns regarding the given service. The said
meeting is important to both teacher and students to be able to settle all things about he said
matter. Seventh, “Services are provided” teachers, parents are able to know their
responsibilities given with the IEP copies. Children with disabilities are experiencing the
implementation of the said curriculum. Eighth, “Progress is measured and reported o parents”
child’s progress is identified and measured as a particular goa is being set annually, and is
reported to the parents for them to be aware. Ninth, “The EIP is reviewed” EIP (Individualized
Education Program) is reviewed, teacher and students are invited for possible inteventions or
placement decisions. Lastly, “The child is re-evaluated” child is re-evaluated every at least every
3 years if the child is still considered as child with disability.
Indeed, evaluation and identification process are important for it helps the children in
their academic learning, know what are the classifications of disabilities for eligibility. And helps
identify what related service is to be given to the child with disability as they went through this
process.

3. Why does assessment and identification process must be done as early as possible?
Identification and assessment are important part of the procedure. As we delve through a
deeper understanding about the definition itself, we could therefore say that both forename
words should be done early as possible. In assessment, it focuses on the identification of child’s
specific learning strength and needs to determine whether the child is eligible for special
education services. Collecting information about a child for the purpose of making decisions are
a part of assessment process in special education. It could also be known as a solving-problem
process. Meanwhile, identification also do the same thing as assessment in the aspect of
purpose and role being portrayed upon. Identification, from the word itself, as stated in the first
step of the process in which it allows to locate and evaluate all the children with disabilities to
identify who needs special education and related services. And also, (Referral or Request for
Evaluation) school professional are tasked to evaluate a child if he/she has disability, this may
request writing and verbal request.
National Association of naset have concluded primary purposes of assessment in special
education process; screening and identification in which all children undergo to screening if they
are able experience delays or learning problem. Eligibility and diagnostic that determines
whether the child has disability and is eligible for special education. IEP development and
placement which provides detailed information so that Individualized Education Program (IEP)
may developed an appropriate decision making. Instructional planning; to develop a plan
instruction to child’s special needs. And also, evaluation; to evaluate students progress.
Thus, it is already evident that assessment and identification must done early to determine,
locate, identify, collect and evaluate child’s eligibility for special education service. These are
part of the systematize collection, interpretation and intervention to appropriate classification
and placement decisions.

4. Who are the members of the evaluation team in the special education? Choose at
least one (1) member and explain the role in the identification and evaluation
In the process of Evaluation and identification it was clearly stated in step number two, “The
child is evaluated” in which, as the sentence suggest, it aims to evaluate the child’s all areas of
suspected disability. Additionally, as stated in the module, “The result is will be used to decide
the child’s eligibility for special education and related services and to make decisions about
appropriate educational program for the child.” In this part evaluation team came to its
existence and they played a vital role in this particular aspect. They are as follows: Teacher,
Psychologist, Therapist, Doctor or Nurse, Counselor, Social Work and parents. That concludes
the evaluation team in the special education with corresponding functions as evaluation takes
place.

To answer your question upon choosing at least one (1) member and explaining its role in
the identification and evaluation. Well, in this given situation, I would choose teacher and
parents as we all know, parents are part of the basic unit in the society. They helped and guide
as at all aspect, gives us wings to fly and hone us we became the person whom we wished
ourselves to be, same as through with the teacher’s role in the child’s maturity or development
as they are considered as second parents. In the aspect of evaluation and identification I have
noticed that almost all of the steps in the process, parents are always present. The staff made
sure that parents should always know everything they have agreed. Parents would always work
with the staff; part of decision making, they joined EIP meetings and as progress is monitored it
would always be them to know it first. In short, they are part of the process starting from the very
first procedure down to the last.

Furthermore, teachers have also brought huge contribution on the identification and
evaluation placement process. They instruct students in the development of skills and
knowledge that enables them to participate independent to the highest degree possible. Provide
consultation and support services including in-service training and adopt methods for the
students/pupils as they undergo into the process of evaluation. Most importantly, Works with
members of the IEP team (i.e. parents, speech providers, occupational & physical therapists,
orientation & mobility and vision specialists) to provide a functional and meaningful program and
closely monitor the child’s behavior as she/he went through the process of evaluation and
identification process.

Thus, both teacher and parents take part in
the implementation of special education. Most importantly, they are the one who guides and a
part of the process as they contribute meaningfully to building child’s innermost ability.

PLEASE DO THE TASK

This activity will guide you to conceptualize the main objective of this module. Here, you
are tasked to unlock the hidden phrase, which supports the goal of special and inclusive
education by answering the questions and following the instruction. Good Luck!

At this point, after you answered the questions and followed the instruction you may
now arrange the remaining letters in the puzzle to unlock the hidden phrase and explain
the hidden phrase that you have unlocked from the puzzle.

Explain the hidden phrase that you have unlocked from the puzzle.

Explain the hidden phrase that you have unlocked from the puzzle.

“If a child can’t learn the way we teach maybe we can teach them the way they
learn.” This was the statement or should I say a quote formed from the puzzle I have
unlocked from the activity. Simple words were used to give emphasis on the importance
of knowing individuality and disparity among learners. The said statement says it all but
as we delve through it, we could able contextualized and understand deeply what does
those words really mean.
We are in a diverse world, where anyone has played a unique form and
portrayal. We distinguished ourselves from others for we are simply different from them
and so they are from us. I believe even though such differences occur we could able to
analyze and interpret every actions and words that somebody has to utter. We may not
have seen their thoughts, but their eyes give us the vision to see what’s inside their
soul. We may not have heared them talking but their actions speak louder than words.
We may not have feel what’s inside their heart but their silence says it all. It’s like a
strong volt of emotion that runs in our veins as we make connections to individual who
has that strong feeling of thirst and hunger as they ask for our needs. They are hungry
for knowledge and know the things they haven’t heard, seen nor touched. They are
these people who still wants to enjoy and explore meaningfully the worth of education
despite of their disabilities. And I believe they can’t do it by themselves. Thus, they
needed someone to let them understand the worth of education even though they are
unique from others.
As a future Educator it is a huge challenge on how we can able to handle such
individuality and differences among our learners. It is indeed our responsibility to know
unique characteristics of the students. Knowing their strength and weakness. Evaluate
them to which aspect or part they are good and bad at. We must therefore have some
necessary adjustments if they can’t able to digest the learning we shared or sharing
unto them. If a child can’t learn the way we teach, necessary strategies should be
applied. Identify how they learn and teach them in a such way that they could be able
understand fully locate things accordingly. When we notice that they could no longer
learn somethings from us then we should consider their way of learning and taught the
way they learn considering the fact that they suffer from disabilities. We must not be
conscious of their condition, either deaf, blind, handicapped, gifted or has
exceptionalities but with the person themselves and what are possible ways to cope
with the learning style and the way they learn. Children with special needs seeks for
attention as an Educator we must fed them well with the necessary knowledge and
skills they deserve despite of this various circumstances. Indeed, “If a child can’t learn
the way we teach maybe we can teach them the way they learn.”
