Blog #5: With two weeks until your Final Capstone Proposal is due, which Core

Competencies do you think you will achieve / accomplish in your Capstone Project?
Choose 2 competencies from each section and explain how you achieved / accomplished
them in the course of completing your project.
Core Competency: How you demonstrate it in your Capstone Project:
Personal Awareness & - I am personally responsible, self-motivated, and can advocate
Responsibility for myself.

I’ve kept up with my project so far. There have been times where I felt
unmotivated because of how tired and busy I was but I was always
able to get myself out of that slump.
- I understand learning takes patience and time.

It’s my first-time coaching and it’s very important for me to

understand that it’s going to take time to learn and that there will be
bumps in the road. I’ve not only had to be patient with myself but
with the players because they are learning/developing new skills.

Social Responsibility - I am aware of my community and environment and work

independently and collaboratively for the benefit of others.

I’ve had to reach out/talk to a lot of people for this project to work.
Whether that’d be me talking to players, coaches, mentors, peers, etc.
At the same time, I’ve taken time to evaluate my work so that it’s the
best for the players.
- I have positive peer and intergenerational relationships.

I’ve made lots of new connections so far that I never would have if it
weren’t for this capstone project. I’m very fortunate to be able to have
mentors and have many people on my side to help me if needed. Also
with the players, I’ve connected with them a lot more and I think it’s
been beneficial for both of us.

Critical Thinking - I can assess my progress.

There were times where I barely made any progress, and I was able to
see that and adjust my work habits accordingly. As of right now, I’m all
caught up with everything and everything is going to plan.
- I understand the purpose of my work and consider my
audience.

The reason why I’m doing this is because of my love for basketball; I
also want the best for the girls’ basketball program at Mountain. My
passion for this is what keeps me going.
Creative Thinking - I can persevere and understand that failure can be productive.

The best way to grow and progress is to make mistakes and I

understand that. I’m new to coaching so when things don’t go to plan,
I just have to e-evaluate what I could’ve done better. Also, I’ve been
knocked down a couple times so far, but I never let that discourage
me.
- I can use the environment around me, including others, and
my unconscious mind to generate new ideas.

I’ve talked to the coaches at the JR Girl’s practice about how we could
do as a team, but I’ve also asked what I could have done better at the
practice. Everything we’ve talked about was for the benefit of the
team.

Communication - I can reflect on the processes of learning and share what I

have learned.

Honestly, I've done a lot of my reflecting through the blog posts but
it’s still helpful. My website has also helped a lot with keeping me on
track with my progress. It’s also where I post all my progress.
- I can listen, learn to contribute meaningfully to discussion and
debate, consider different perspectives, and build consensus.

I’m always open to criticism/ways I could do better because this whole

project is a learning process. I don’t take it to heart, I just take the
advice and incorporate it in the next session/practice.

Personal & Cultural - I understand how to use my strengths and abilities to my

Identity advantage, and I can explain how I use them to contribute to
my community.

Basketball is something I'm skilled at and have a passion for, I have

experience that will be very helpful for the younger girl at the school.
So, I’ve used all my basketball knowledge for the better of all the
players on the team.
- I understand how what I value has and will shape my choices.

If I wasn’t interested in basketball, I would have ZERO motivation to do

this project, but I chose something I’m passionate about so that this
project doesn’t bore me out of my mind. I want to see the JR Girls' team
to succeed so I’m doing everything that I can to help them.
