REPORT OF SITE INVESTIGATION CONDUCTED FOR PROPOSED
BYPASS AT PERAMBRA IN KOZHIKODE

1.GENERAL

There is a proposal to construct a bypass under Ms RBDCK at Perambra in Kozhikode. M/s

Uralungal Labour Contract Co-Operative Society Ltd. Got to wrk on the new bypass being
built to bypass the block in Perambra town. As part of this, decided to carry out a detailed sub
soil investigation to find out safe bearing capacity and selection of appropriate foundations
for the proposed structures in the road stretch. Soil investigation was carried out at the site
during the period of 17th August to 27th August 2020. A total of Three boreholes were drill
using rotary method, two of which were on the proposed culvert location and one on the
proposed retaining wall location.Standard penetration tests were conducted at regular
intervals and soil samples were taken from these depths for identification and soil
classification.

2. SCOPE OF WORK

The scope of work at this site, entrusted with us comprised of

 Mobilization of boring rigs with all necessary equipments and skilled/unskilled

personals for the field work.
 Boring three bore holes of diameter 150mm using drilling equipments.
 Conduction of standard penetration tests in bore hole at every 1m depth or change of
strata and preparing bore log showing details.
 Collection of disturbed samples in air tight polythene bags with proper labelling and
transportation to laboratory.
 Conducting the laboratory tests on the disturbed samples as per Indian standards and
furnishing the results.
 Preparation and submission of the detailed report with field and laboratory results.

3. PROGRAMME OF INVESTIGATION

One boring unit with all necessary equipment along with a team of technical personal with
skilled labourers where mobilised at the work site. Three 150 mm diameter boreholes were
taken at the site. The borehole was extended by rotary drilling as per IS:1892-1972. In the
hard/ soft rock stratum consisting of intact or jointed rock mass or boulders, the borehole was
advanced by rotary drilling with NX size diamond coring bit. Standard Penetration Tests
(SPT) was carried out in the boreholes as per provisions contained in Indian Standard Code
IS 2131-1981. Representative samples were collected at every 1.50 m interval depth or
change of strata, whichever is earlier. The samples obtained from split spoon sampler were
used for visual description, identification, relevant laboratory tests and classification.
Maximum depths achieved in the boreholes and the depths of water table are given in the
Table 1.

FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATION FOR STRUCTURES IN THE BYPASS AT PERAMBRA IN

KOZHIKODE

Three Bore holes were taken at the proposed retaining wall at Chainage 2/390 (BH1), Culvert at
Chainage 1/558.05 (BH2) and Culvert at Chainage 1/962.20 (BH3). Ground water table was met
with at very shallow depth of 0.70 m, 0.5 m and 0.2 m respectively in BH1, 2 and 3.

BH1 at Ch: 2/390: Retaining wall 6 m height:

Clayey sand having about 40% of silt and clay exists upto 4.20 m from ground surface. Soil is very
loose at 1.50 m and medium dense at 3.00 m depth having an N value of 11. Clayey sand is
followed by silty sandy clay upto 5.40 m. It is followed by Sandy clay upto 7.40 m depth. The
average N value from 4.50 to 7.50 m is 12. Percentage silt and clay is about 38%. Considering the
N value and silt and clay content, a safe bearing capacity of 10 t/m2 can be adopted at a depth of
3.00 m. If the bearing pressure at the base of the retaining wall is higher than 10 t/m2, sand piles
of 20 cm diameter at a spacing of 0.75 m centre to centre may be driven to densify the silty sandy
clay layer upto a depth of 5.00 m. The sand pile treatment can be done for the whole base width
of the retaining wall. Additional two more layers of sand pile may be driven on either side of the
retaining wall base width. A safe bearing capacity of 20 t/m2 can be taken over the sand pile
treated ground. It will be ideal to conduct a standard penetration test to ascertain the N value on
the sand pile treated soil and thereby the above safe bearing capacity can be physically
ascertained.

BH2 at Ch: 1/558.05: Culvert 3 x 3 size:

Filled soil is available at this location upto 0.75 m. It is followed by very soft or loose sandy clay/
clayey sand upto 3.70 m with an average N value of 6. From 3.70 m to 5.60 m sandy clay with an
N value of 25 is available. Sandy clay with gravel exists from 5.60 m 7.30 m with an N value of 4.
Since the soil is very loose, it is recommended to drive coconut pile having a length of 4.00 m, at
1.20 m centre to centre beneath the culvert area. One additional layer of coconut pile may be
driven outside the culvert base area on all sides. A safe bearing capacity of 12 t/m2 can be adopted
above the coconut pile treated soil. Foundation may be placed at a depth of 0.75 m below the
ground level. The above safe bearing capacity can be assessed through a plate load test above the
coconut pile treated soil.

BH3 at Ch: 1/962.20; Culvert 4 x 4 m:

Culvert can be placed at a depth of 3.00 m from original ground level. A safe bearing capacity of
10 t/m2 can be taken at this location. Since water table at this location is at 0.20 m, driving of
sand pile having 20 cm diameter upto a depth of 6.00 m is recommended. Sand pile should be
driven at a distance of 1.00 m centre to centre below the base of the culvert. One layer of sand pile
should be driven outside the base area all along the sides. Foundation should be placed at a depth
of 0.80 m below the existing ground level. A safe bearing capacity of 16 t/m2 can be taken for
foundation design. It will be ideal to conduct a standard penetration test to ascertain the N value
on the sand pile treated soil and thereby the above safe bearing capacity can be physically
ascertained.
