MODULE 5.3: REAL LIFE PRBLEM APPLICATIONS

ASSESSMENT NO.3
Instructions: Solve the following as required.

a. After picking up a friend who lives 10 miles away and leaving on a trip, Anna records her distance
from home over time. Find her average speed for over the first 6 hours.

Table 1. Distance traveled at one-hour interval

Suppose we need to find the average speed for over the first 6 hours,
Let ∆𝑦 be the change in distance (in miles) for the first 6 hours on a trip
Let ∆𝑥 be the change in time (hours) for the first 6 hours on a trip
Use this equation to find the average speed of Anna for over the first 6 hours.
∆𝑦 𝑓(𝑥 2 ) − 𝑓(𝑥1 ) (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )
= =
∆𝑥 𝑥 2 − 𝑥1 𝑥 2 − 𝑥1
∆𝑦 282𝑚𝑖 − 10𝑚𝑖
=
∆𝑥 6ℎ𝑟𝑠 − 0ℎ𝑟𝑠
∆𝑦 272𝑚𝑖
=
∆𝑥 6ℎ𝑟
∆𝑦
= 45.33 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟

2. Find the year where the number of men’s and women’s team were nearly equal.
On year 1994, the number of men’s team and women’s team were nearly equal
with a difference of 1.

c. A soccer player passes the ball from a point that is 18 yards from the end line and 50 yards from
the same sideline. The pass is received by a teammate who is 42 yards from the same end line and
50 yards from the same sideline, as shown in the figure. How long is the pass?

Figure 1. Points indicated in a soccer field

Suppose we need to find the distance of the pass,

Let (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) be the pass that is recorded where a soccer player passes the
ball from a point that is 18 yards from the end line and 50 yards from the same
sideline. (12,18)
Let (𝑥 2 ,𝑦2 ) be received by a teammate who is 42 yards from the same
end line and 50 yards from the same sideline. (50,42)
Use this equation to find the distance of the pass;
𝑑 = √(𝑥 2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 ) 2
𝑑 = √(50 − 12) 2 + (42 − 18) 2
𝑑 = √(38) 2 + (24) 2
𝑑 = √1444 + 576
𝑑 = √2020 = 2√505 𝑜𝑟 44.94 𝑦𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑠

d. Considering the two points is a linear pattern for the years 2001 to 2003, find the sales in million
dollars for the year 2002. (Source: Big Lts Inc.; Larson and Hostetler, 2007)

Table 3. Sales for 2001 and 2003

Suppose we need to find the sales in million dollars for the year 2002,
Let 𝑥 be the year for the sales
Let 𝑦 be the sales (millions)
Use this equation to find the sales in million dollars for the year 2002,
(𝑥 + 𝑥2 ) (𝑦1 + 𝑦2 )
(𝑥 𝑚, 𝑦𝑚 ) = ( 1 , )
2 2
(2003 + 2001) (3433 + 4174)
(𝑥𝑚 , 𝑦𝑚 ) = ( , )
2 2
(4004) (7607)
(𝑥 𝑚 ,𝑦𝑚 ) = ( , )
2 2
(𝑥 𝑚 ,𝑦𝑚 ) = (2002, 3803.5)
3803.5 million dollars is the sales for the year 2002.
