PILLARS OF
CIANJUR

CIANJUR
Cianjur is a small regency in West Java
located between Bogor and Bandung.
The territory consists of highlands and
lowlands. The highlands are Mount Gede,
meanwhile, the lowlands are in the
south dominated by rice and vegetable
fields. This regency is known as a
religious town which rich in culture,
both physical culture and non-physical
culture.
PHYSICAL CULTURE
Tauco, a food seasoning paste made
of fermented soy.
Manisan, fermented fruit and
vegetables so it could last longer and
still tastes fresh.
Kecapi, a musical instrument similar to
guitar where we have to pick the
strings to make sounds.
Suling, a musical instrument where we
have to blow one of the hole and
close the other certain holes to make
certain sounds.
NON-PHYSICAL CULTURE
The language used in Cianjur is pure
Sundanese where it is now rarely used in
the other regency or cities in West Java.
Tembang Cianjuran basically means Cianjur's
song, it is a music genre where the
instrumental is from kecapi and suling, the
lyrics are certainly Sundanese.
Kuda kosong festival is an annual event, held
in order to reminisce the history in Cianjur.

OF CIANJUR
In order to protect and conserve the cultures
that were slowly forgotten due to modernism
and globalism, the regent of Cianjur came up
with an idea of 3 culture pillars of Cianjur. As
time goes by, the other regent decided to add
four more, so there are 7 of them.
1. MAOS
Maos in English means
reciting the holy book of
the religions, especially the
Qur'an. Cianjur people
believe that religion is the
important foundation for
building Cianjur and keeping
the people in harmony. So
with reciting the holy
book of the religions,
Cianjur people hoped to
always live in harmony.
2. MAMAOS
Mamaos in English generally means
singing. But in this context, mamaos
specifically means singing Tembang
Cianjuran or Cianjur's songs, the
singer usually women called Sinden.
Mamaos is used to express feelings
or telling story through songs.
3. MAENPO
Maenpo is the traditional martial art
from Cianjur which is people known
better as Pencak Silat. This sport is
specifically comes from Cikalong.. This
culture seems to be already forgotten
because when a maenpo teacher did
research about this, only the elderly
knows the term maenpo.
4. TATANEN
Tatanen means planting rice in English.
Cianjur is also known for the Pandan
Wangi rice which has a nice smell
when it's cooked and it tastes
softer and fluffier than the usual
rice. Rice fields can be easily found
in Cianjur because a lot of Cianjur
people's livelihood is from farming.
5. TANGINAS
Tanginas means Cianjur people must
be agile and diligent. They usually
wake up early in the morning and
start their work early, because they
believe the proverb saying that
chicken will peg on our earnings if
we wake up and start the work late.
6. SOMEAH
Someah means friendly. Cianjur people
tend to welcome and greet people with
their best smiles. Cianjur people have a
habit to greet people they know when
they meet anywhere, even though they
know nothing more than just their
name. They are always hospitable.
7. SAUYUNAN
In English, sauyunan means
Cianjur people live
together in peace and
harmony. They always help
each other and make the
neighborhood a nice place
to gather together so
everyone could live
comfortably with each
other.
