What Is It

MUSIC OF THE CLASSICAL PERIOD

The period from 1750-1820 was an era of classical music. It falls

between the Baroque and Romantic periods. The music created during this
period is called Classical music from the word classic meaning with high
quality of its kind. The music of this period is characterized as having a lighter,
clearer texture, clearer melody and is less complex than Baroque music. It is
mainly homophonic which is created when two instruments are playing the
same line of melody in the same rhythm.

The harpsichord that was prominent during the Baroque period was
replaced as the main keyboard instrument by the piano. Instrumental music
was considered important by classical period composers. Composers and
listeners liked music produced by the instruments alone. The vocal music that
was loved by the people during the medieval period is now replaced by the
instrumental music. The main kinds of instrumental music produced during
this period were the sonata, trio, string quartet, symphony and solo concerto.
Choral works and opera (a staged dramatic work for singers and orchestra)
were also important during this period.

Classical music is still played until this time. It is used by many to calm
and to meditate. It is even played to relax a patient’s mind. That is the benefit
that the music can give to the people. But music has different characteristics
as of its tempo, rhythm, texture, melody, dynamics and the like making it
unique from the other. Just listen to the music that suits you and pleasing to
your ears.

Listening to classical music might not be your choice because most of

you would rather sing songs or listen to music on your kind of interest which
for you would give enjoyment and would make you feel good but unknowingly
listening and viewing videos to Classical Instrumental Music you will be
amazed how it’s done. I am sure you will learn to love Classical Music.

Summary

11
At the end of the lesson the learners must have knowledge on following
concept.

Classical music refers to the period from 1750 – 1820. It is also known as the
“Age of Reason” or Age of Enlightenment” because reason and individualism
rather than tradition were emphasized in this period.
During this period, different instrumental forms of music were developed.
These were sonata, concerto, and symphony. The three greatest and most
popular composers of the period were: Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven.

The main characteristics of Classical Music:
