Course Title: Care of the Older Adult (RLE) Clinical Instructor: Prof. Jonaid M. Sadang

General Objective:
At the end of the 7 days Geriatric ward virtual simulation duty, the student nurse will be able to
utilize the nursing process in the care of older patients with various medical conditions, acquire
comprehensive knowledge and skills in assessing, planning, administering care and managing
general health of their respective geriatric patient, perform the basic nursing skills and procedures
with ease and competence and manifest positive and desirable attitudes necessary in the
promotion of optimal health and alleviation of illness.

DAY 1 Specific Objectives:


➢ Cognitive:
✓ Familiarize the physical make up, patient, population of geriatric ward.
✓ Understand mental status assessment of the elderly patient, and how and
when to apply a standardized assessment tool.
✓ Learn how a multi-disciplinary team works in the care of older adults.

➢ Affective:
✓ To be able to work well or establish a good atmosphere with my co-student
nurse, and CI during the orientation.
✓ To be able to understand the importance of care in older adults.

➢ Psychomotor:
✓ To be able to give an appropriate care to my patient.
✓ To be able to do my job well as a student nurse.

DAY 2 Specific Objectives:


➢ Cognitive:
✓ Identify the role of community resources/organizations in preserving functional
independence of older adults.
✓ Describe the nurse-patient relationship regarding geriatric nurse.
✓ Recognize common diseases which present differently in elders.

➢ Affective:
✓ Incorporate evidence-based nursing into geriatric care.
✓ Develop appropriate attitude and behavior necessary in geriatric care.
✓ Develop a systematic approach in conducting geriatric assessment.
➢ Psychomotor:
✓ Perform comprehensive geriatric assessment.
✓ Formulate priority nursing care plans for older adults.
✓ Demonstrate compassion, empathy, and respect in geriatric care.

DAY 3 Specific Objectives:


➢ Cognitive:
✓ Recognize the importance of collaboration in the care of older adults with
health needs.
✓ Identify issues and challenges in the care of older persons.
✓ Recognize the importance of safe nursing practice by adhering to standards
and principle in the care of older adults.

➢ Affective:
✓ Propose a health productive activity for geriatric patient.
✓ Value the importance of sensible routine activities for older adults.
✓ Conform to the 6 dimension of wellness model in generating daily activities
(Physical, Emotional, Social, Intellectual, Environmental, and Spiritual needs).

➢ Psychomotor:
✓ Utilize the SMART (Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-
bounded) method in setting goals of proposed activities.
✓ Devise a daily routine timetable for our older adult.
✓ Present the established the health productive activities to improve the health
of geriatric client.

DAY 4 Specific Objectives:


➢ Cognitive:
✓ Recognize the importance of collaboration in the care of older adults with
health needs.
✓ Identify issues and challenges in the care of older persons.

✓ Develop appropriate attitude and behavior necessary in geriatric care.
✓ Develop a systematic approach in conducting geriatric assessment.

➢ Psychomotor:
✓ To be able to give an appropriate care to my patient.
✓ To be able to do my job well as a student nurse.

DAY 6 Specific Objectives:


➢ Cognitive:
✓ To be able to expand my knowledge regarding my patient health condition.
✓ To be able to understand the case of my patient.
➢ Affective:
✓ To be able to work well or establish a good atmosphere with my co-student
nurse, and CI during the case presentation.
✓ To be able to understand the importance of care in older adults.

➢ Psychomotor:
✓ Present my case to the class.
✓ Participate and listen to the presentation of cases as basis for assessment.
