Differentiate a Schultze and Duncan Placenta

The placenta is in the uterus. One side is attached to the uterus and the other faces
the baby. These are sometimes referred to as “Dirty Duncan” and Shiny Schultz.
Schultz Placenta

● The separation of the placenta from the uterine wall during labor; begins at the placental center
and leads to an expulsion of the placenta after delivery of the baby.

● The expulsion of the placenta with the presentation of the maternal rough side first, rather than

Is a brief surgical procedure referring to the dilations (opening of the cervix and

Purpose
● Remove tissue in the uterus during or after a miscarriage or abortion or remove
small pieces of placenta after childbirth. This helps prevent infection or heavy
bleeding.
● Diagnose or treat abnormal uterine bleeding. Diagnosing or treating growths
such as fibroids, polyps or endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, or uterine cancer.
A sample of uterine tissue is viewed under a microscope to check for abnormal
cells.
