SCENARIO:
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 and died on April 4, 1968). He was an
American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesman and leader in the
American civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King advanced civil
rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the
nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. He was the son of early civil rights activist and
minister Martin Luther King Sr.
King participated in and led marches for blacks' right to vote, desegregation, labor rights, and
other basic civil rights.
On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial
inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize two of the three Selma to
Montgomery marches. In his final years, he expanded his focus to include opposition
towards poverty, capitalism, and the Vietnam War. (Source: Wikipedia)
Sir Muhammad Iqbal ;محمد اقبالwas born on 9 November 1877 and died on 21 April 1938), was
a South Asian Muslim poet, philosopher, and politician, whose poetry in the Urdu language is
among the greatest of the twentieth century, and whose vision of a cultural and political ideal for
the Muslims of British-ruled India was to animate the impulse for Pakistan. He is commonly
referred to by the honorific Allama (from Persian: عالمہ------/ 'very knowing, most learned').
During this time, he wrote prolifically. Among the Urdu poems from this time that remain
popular are Parinde ki faryad (A bird's prayer), an early meditation on animal rights, and Tarana-
e-Hindi (The Song of India) a patriotic poem—both poems composed for children. After
returning to Lahore in 1908, he established a law practice but concentrated on writing scholarly
works on politics, economics, history, philosophy, and religion. He is best known for his poetic
works, including Asrar-e-Khudi – after whose publication he was awarded
a knighthood, Rumuz-e-Bekhudi, and the Bang-e-Dara. In Iran, where he is known as Iqbāl-e
Lāhorī (Iqbal of Lahore), he is highly regarded for his Persian works.
Iqbal was a strong proponent of the political and spiritual revival of Islamic civilization across
the world, but in particular in South Asia; a series of lectures he delivered to this effect were
published as The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam. Iqbal was elected to the Punjab
Legislative Council in 1927 and held a number of positions in the All India Muslim League. In
his 1930 presidential address at the League's annual meeting in Allahabad, he formulated a
political framework for Muslims in British-ruled India. Iqbal died in 1938. After the creation
of Pakistan in 1947, he was named the national poet there. He is also known as the "Hakeem-ul-
Ummat" (“The Sage of the Ummah”) and the "Mufakkir-e-Pakistan" (“The Thinker of
Pakistan”). The anniversary of his birth (Yom-e Welādat-e Muḥammad Iqbāl), 9 November,
used to be a public holiday in Pakistan until 2018. (Source: Wikipedia)
REQUIRED: In the light of above available information, you are required to identify the above two
leaders with respect to their type and causes that they championed or struggled for! As per
your opinion try to categorize Martin Luther King Jr. and Allama Muhammad Iqbal among the
following categories of leaders:
1. Leaders who challenged the process to bring a major change in the society.
2. Leaders who modelled the way by setting an example or an organization.
3. Leaders who proved to be change agent for bringing a radical change or revolution in
society by influencing the thinking of their nation.
Answer:
Martin Luther King Jr. is a leader who challenged the process to bring major change in the
society. He was inspired by his Christian beliefs and the non-violent activism of Mahatma
Gandhi. He through his marches, speeches, & non-violent movements against poverty,
Capitalism, Vietnam war, racial discrimination, was able to successfully combat and acquire the
rights for the Black’s right to vote, Labor rights, and other basic civil rights. For his efforts he
won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through non-violent resistance.
In my opinion, Allama Iqbal was the person who gave the idea of creation of separate state
within or without the British Crown in his famous presidential address in 30 December 1930. He,
in order to convince the Muslims of India, wrote poems and verses to initiate change in the
antiquated thinking. He gave the ultimate destiny of the Muslims and tried to convince Jinnah,
the founder of Pakistan, that the separate state was the only solution to the Hindu-Muslim
problem. His popularity and followers increased after Allahabad’s address. After, some political
events that took place in India, the Musalmans of India began endeavoring for the separate
homeland. Indeed, he proved that he was a leader who tried to revolutionize the thinking of the
society through his writings that ultimately led us to the creation of Pakistan.
After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, he was named as the national poet and was known as
“"Hakeem-ul-Ummat" (“The Sage of the Ummah”) and the "Mufakkir-e-Pakistan" (“The
Thinker of Pakistan”).
