Site audit
A site audit is important in that it helps avoid technical and commercial problems in
subsequent phases.

The major points dealt with:

● Identification of needs (remember, not all problems are related to harmonics).
● Definition of goals with the customer.
● Measurement of harmonics in the installation (if possible).
● Preparation of a single-line diagram (sources, protection, loads, cable lengths, etc.).
● Selection of SineWave installation points.
● Floor space and volume available for installation.
● Installation of protection circuit breakers, taking into account discrimination with
upstream circuit breakers.
● Installation of sensors in the switchboards, taking into account the need to de-
energize.
● Evacuation of heat losses
● Zones sensitive to noise and vibrations

APC by Schneider Electric – Sinewave Installations Recommendations – Date: June 8th 2010
Installation constraints

Ö Provide at least 300 mm for evacuation of hot air

Ö No adjacent heat sources

sinewave

Ö Temperature of incoming air must be < 40°C

25°C advised because service life decrease as
temperature increase

Ö No heat sources under the unit

Heat (windings, transformers, power resistors, etc.)
source
Ö Provide a clearance of at least 300 mm for air input
Ö Provide sufficient space for maintenance

APC by Schneider Electric – Sinewave Installations Recommendations – Date: June 8th 2010
Installation constraints

Ö Do not install two SineWave units one above the other

on a wall (the top unit will draw hot air produced by
sinewave

the bottom unit)

sinewave

APC by Schneider Electric – Sinewave Installations Recommendations – Date: June 8th 2010
Installation constraints in a cabinet
Ö Do not use a cabinet rated IPx1x or IPx2x (plain roof)
Ö Allow for the free flow of hot air (vented roof)

Ö Install a deflector between the two units (standard option)

Ö Provide sufficient air input for cooling (> 2000 m3 / hr)

Ö Provide sufficient space for maintenance

APC by Schneider Electric – Sinewave Installations Recommendations – Date: June 8th 2010
Environmental constraints

sinewave

Ö Do not install SineWave in a closed space

(unventilated technical duct, false ceilings, etc.)

sinewave

APC by Schneider Electric – Sinewave Installations Recommendations – Date: June 8th 2010
Environmental constraints (cont.)

Ö Do not install SineWave in areas with conducting or

aggressive dust (e.g. containing hydrocarbons) such as
parking lots, road tunnels, etc.)

sinewave
Ö Do not install SineWave in rooms with high levels of dust
(SineWave degree of protection is IP205, protected
against particles > 5 mm)

Ö Periodically clean the ventilation grates (depending on

the level of dust)

Sensor selection
Ö! System performance is guaranteed on the condition that
the sensors are approved and supplied with the SineWave
CB1

CB2
used

P1
Ö SineWave is normally supplied with open CT (or APC
P2 TERMINAL BLOCK
sinewave
split toroids) 600/1 rating.

Ö Open CT (or APC split toroids) rated 2000/1 are also

available as an option.

Ö The other recommended ratings are available in closed

CT (or APC closed toroids)

Ö The sensor rating depends on the RMS value and the

peak value of the load currents requiring processing !
Always use the rating indicated in the selection table or
the next highest rating (see Appendix in the CDST)

APC by Schneider Electric – Sinewave Installations Recommendations – Date: June 8th 2010
Short-circuit protection

CB1
Ö Selection of protection devices depends on local
standards (breaking capacity, system earthling
CB2
arrangement, neutral protection and interruption, etc.)

Ö ! Computer loads, I_neutral <= 3 x I_phase (IH3)

sinewave

ÖA discrimination study is required

(CB2 must open before CB1)

Ö If discrimination is not ensured, select a lower SineWave

rating (parallel connection) or install a faster protection
system (ultra fast fuses)

Ö! 90 A and 120 A SineWave units must be protected by

two circuit-breakers (one per 45 A or 60 A power module)

APC by Schneider Electric – Sinewave Installations Recommendations – Date: June 8th 2010
Installation of the sensors 1/2

CB1

Ö The sensors must always be installed downstream of the

CB2 SineWave connection point

P1
Ö The sensors must be correctly installed (see the manual)

Ö The wires of each sensor must be twisted and marked

P2 TERMINAL BLOCK
sinewave

Ö Do not connect the secondary windings to the exposed

conductive parts ( S2 connected to 0V and the neutral)

Ö Sensor wires must not run close to power conductors

Ö Sensors can be supplied and installed before the SineWave

units (short-circuitable terminal block is indispensable)

Ö The CT twist wire have to be well twisted , especially if

there is one conncetion terminal between CT twist wire.
If the connection is not good, the condition will affect CT
sampling precision

Sinewave + passive-filter combination

H5 AHF

sinewave

Ö Install the current sensors downstream of the passive filter tuned to H5

ÖDo not condition H5

Remark:
IF AHF is design for another harmonic (for instance:H7) do not condition
this other harmonic (for instance:H7)

ÖPower-factor correction capacitors must always be connected

upstream of the SineWave connection point.
ÖIf it’s not possible to move capacitors upstream the Sinewave or if
the capacitors are included into the load, the type 6 setup must be
selected

Setup

Ö Except in special cases, the band width should be reduced to a strict minimum.
For most applications, it can be limited to H13 and even H9

ÖType 2 must never be used (risk of serious malfunctions),

Type 2 only for tests in the factory

Ö Except in special cases, filtering should not be used (+32, +64, +96)

ÖIn the case of several SW are installed in the same place (same building),
a start up delay must be added with setup menu in order to delay start up
SW by SW
Î step about 10s.
This is to avoid auto instability between SW when Network Power is coming back.

Neutral connection

3Ph + N
Loads Ö Connect the neutral to SineWave
3Ph + N
and set SineWave to "neutral
distributed" if this is the case,
whatever the type of load
conditioned (computers, variable-
sinewave
speed drives, etc.)

Remark: Current reading done on the 3 sensors installed

Ls
Ö Set to "neutral not distributed" if the
neutral is not distributed.

! An inductor must be installed in the unit

(option) to recreate an artificial neutral.
! Following setup is mandatory:
To remove all H3 and multiple odd harmonic
sinewave

(to remove H3, H9, H15 & 21)

Remark: Current reading done only on the 2 sensors installed phase 1&2,
current phase 3 created by the software.

The 2 CT are placed:

● IF is not sinusoidal wave ● The inject point is moved to the front of all A + B + C
● IH is a very big harmonic current for filler A+B+C
● some risk to cause resonance in path C ● low risk to cause resonance
