School History
Great Neck Middle is a school rich in history, tradition, and accomplishment. Housed in the former Cox
High School, Great Neck opened as a junior high in 1983, serving students in grades 7 and 8. In 1993,
Great Neck became a comprehensive middle school with the addition of grade 6. Today, with
approximately 1100 students, Great Neck is housed in a new facility that opened its doors to staff and
students in January 2012. This facility provides a highly stimulating and functional learning environment,
making Great Neck one of the most modern schools within the division and region. Innovative spaces,
anchored by a centralized media center with nearby computer labs and a production studio, include on
opposing ends a two-story mall of exploratory classrooms and an impressive three-story academic wing.
From the rooms designed with natural day lighting to rainwater harvesting and bio gardens, Great Neck
Middle is notable for its high standards of sustainability.

Great Neck Middle students excel on Virginia's State Standards of Learning (SOLs), by earning 100%
pass rates on all high school credit courses offered and by earning the number two rank in SOL
achievement among the division's 13 traditional middle schools. Finally, Great Neck Middle staff and
students have further distinguished themselves by earning AVID certification.
