Instruction manual Rev H page 1 / 7
The use of Extreme Pressure (EP) lubricants is mandatory. The lubricant supplier should always be consulted,
especially in heavy duty operating conditions such as a low or high ambient temperature and a very
humid or hostile environment. In the case of use on a wide range of temperatures or start-up at a low
temperature, synthetic oils are advised.
Indeed, these oils have a higher viscosity index as well as a lower pour point. However, its compatibility
with our equipment must be checked prior to use with regard to the internal painting of the housing and
auxiliary equipment in contact with the oil (case of polyglycol oils - PG). In this respect, only
polyalphaolephin (PAO) synthetic hydrocarbon oils are harmless.
- Nitrile / Perbunan joints are compatible with PAO and PG oils (temperatures < 100ºC).
The order-specific documents mention the type of recommended oil, viscosity, ambient temperature
ranges, quantity and, possibly, the frequency of oil changes.
It is always advisable to foresee in the preventive maintenance program, among other things, in-service
monitoring of the lubricant by analysing its physical-chemical properties (check with our technical
departments or the lubricant's supplier).
Kinematic viscosity levels are expressed in centistokes (1 cSt = 1mm²/s) at 40°C (around 100°F). As a
reminder, we have included the corresponding Degree Engler (°E) and the Saybolt Second Universal
(S.S.U) units.

Generally, CMD recommends for gearboxes to use oil of CKC range according to ISO 6743-61, and
following the specifications of ISO 12925-12.
In addition, the oil must fulfil the performance requirements of DIN 51517-33, and must have achieved at
least a result ≥10 to the micro-pitting test FZG, FVA 54 I-IV.
If any, an oil following the requirements of AGMA 90054, and obtaining a minimum result ≤30 (mg) to the
strength test for bearings FE8 DIN 5189-3, in addition with a minimum result ≥10 to the micro-pitting test FZG,
FVA 54 I-IV, will be acceptable.

2 : ISO 12925-1 Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) -- Family C (Gears) -- Part 1: Specifications for lubricants for
enclosed gear systems
3 : DIN 51517-3 Lubricants – Lubricating oils - Part 3: Lubricating oils CLP, Minimum requirements
4 : AGMA 9005- American national standard – Industrial gear lubrication
It is mandatory to select an oil consistent with the indications and instructions provided respectively on the
nameplate and on the gearbox documentation. To select the lubricant that best fits these
recommendations, please contact your oil supplier.
In the case of using oil filters, oil properties must be checked and compatible with the filtration level.
Using an oil satisfying the minimum requirements listed in the previous paragraphs cannot engage CMD
responsibility in terms of performances and results obtained.
In addition, CMD is not responsible for damages caused by lubricants. The lubricant manufacturer is solely
responsible for the conformity of his product in regards with the specifications presented in this document.
Implementation conditions changed after order require obtaining the written approval of CMD for the
choice of the lubricant selected.
These tables do not content special specifications for difficult or particular lubricating conditions.

When a sampling is made while the gearbox is running, new oil extra-fillings mustn’t distort the analysis
results. Extra filling must be equal to taken volume and as reduced as possible.
When a sampling is made after the gearbox stop, it must be executed right-away after the stop (within15
mn after the stop), in order to prevent as much as possible the suspended particles decantation
phenomenon in the lubricant. Sample collection must be executed with a reusable pump (subject to
careful cleaning after each use) and single use hoses and flasks.
For reliability and traceability reasons, it’s highly recommended to submit each analysis for a single device
to the same lab.
