use of mercury in Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining
(ASGM) sector through education, introduction of better technology,
strengthened equipment supply chains and demonstrating business
incentives for mercury-free gold production.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Pro-MFM is working with legally registered ASGM groups in the Western, Western North, and Ashanti Regions
as well as a range of stakeholders including government agencies, gold traders, and communities to achieve two
objectives:

1. Demonstrate effective and scalable ASGM production of mercury-free gold

Pro-MFM is supporting partner ASGM groups (miners and traders) to develop business plans focused
on mercury-free gold production that will attract financing to purchase and install mercury-free processing
equipment. Pro-MFM is also undertaking mineral processing analysis to identify appropriate mercury-
free equipment as well as training on equipment use and maintenance, capacity building, business skills,
and responsible ASGM production.

2. Stakeholder engagement to help achieve obligations of the Minamata Convention on

Mercury
Pro-MFM aims to engage ASGM stakeholders in Ghana to help achieve the Minamata Convention by
reducing the use, emission, and release of mercury in ASGM, raising public awareness, and building
institutional capacity, as well as demonstrate the business case for mercury-free ASGM. Tools and
training will focus on progressive responsible gold production using the CRAFT Code, outreach to
improve access to finance for responsible ASGM production, and a media campaign sensitizing the
dangers of mercury use and benefits of mercury-free ASGM.
