Ultramarine
Ultramarine is a deep blue color. The name
comes from the Latin ultramarinus, literally
"beyond the sea", Ultramarine was the finest and
most expensive blue used by Renaissance. It was
often used for the robes of the Virgin Mary, and
symbolized holiness and humility. It remained an
extremely expensive color until 1826.

WATER – THE ENABLER OF LIFE AND GROWTH

Water is the most fundamental and

important enabler of life and progress. Its
unique properties have made it essential to
life. It is a universal solvent that enables the
transport of nutrients across cell walls.
Water has a high heat capacity which helps
provide the earth with its relatively
moderate climate. Many astrobiologists
believe that to find extraterrestrial life, the
presence of liquid water is essential.
There’s no way to understate the
importance of water for life.

At first glance, it might seem that water is

abundant on Planet Earth. A review of the
globe will reveal vast swaths of oceans and
giant lakes. A closer examination reveals a
precious resource in limited supply. Figure

WATER DEMAND DYNAMICS

When designing water treatment

plants be they for potable or sewage
treatment, it is essential to account
for the typical diurnal demand curve.
Simply put, water consumption is not
linear and it follows a typical pattern
as illustrated in the curve in Figure 3.
Demand tends to peak in the morning
trailing off until a second lesser peak
occurs in the early evening. During
the night, demand plummets. It is
incumbent on designers to take this into
account in their calculations to ensure
these dynamics are accommodated.

GETTING THE LEAD OUT (AMONG THE OTHERS)

The presence of soluble salts in water can contribute to severe operating difficulties in
industrial applications. This can include simple hardness (Calcium and Magnesium), total

YOUR TASTE PROVIDER FOR
PURIFIED DRINKING WATER
Water is vital for life. One of the forms of drinking water is
purified drinking water, which is produced by purifying and
filtering spring by reverse osmosis which remove the present
minerals. Inorganic minerals are then added back to the water
before sterilization to provide nutrients and for taste.
These multiple purification steps enable the production of
drinking water with standardized taste and quality anywhere
in the world. When ozone is used to sterilize water, the
bromide impurities present in minerals are oxidized into
bromates.
The EU council, as well as the US Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) and the Standardization Organization
for GCC (GSO), have fixed the bromate limit in bottled
drinking water to a maximum of 10 parts-per-billion. We offer
a range of ultra-low bromide, food grade minerals to meet
those regulatory requirements.

fit to polish UMT UF-XE and UF Tech Series and UF packaged plants effluents. These skid-
mounted systems are available in various models capable of delivering permeate at 100–450
gpm. Pre-programmed to monitor and control other unit operations, they are meant to be part
of a larger flow schematic that would typically include pre-treatment, transfer pumps,
permeate storage tanks, and chemical feed pumps. Further, they are flexible, as we can modify
them to meet requirements for specific sites and situations.

WASTE TO VALUED TECHNOLOGIES TO MAXIMIZE
Aerobic treatment is a biological process VALUE
that uses oxygen to break down organic Aerobic treatment is used to achieve
matter and remove other pollutants like maximum degradation while meeting the
nitrogen and phosphorus. It converts strict regulations set by environmental
organic matter into carbon dioxide and agencies regarding what is released into
new biomass. During aerobic treatment, the air, ground, or water. Aerobic

environmental requirements
• The stabilized resulting sludge is odor
free and makes an excellent fertilizer
• The operation is relatively simple.

INLET SCREEN
In the preliminary treatment the
wastewater is screened (usually 3mm)
removing inorganic solids that would
otherwise buildup over time and need
removal and cause issues with downstream
processes. The collected screenings can be
removed to the garbage disposal or
incineration. The screened influent then
enters the Aerobic Sludge Digester tank(s).

AEROBIC SLUDGE DIGESTER

The Aerobic Sludge Digester employs an
aerated activated sludge process employing
long Sludge Retention Times (SRT). The long
SRT’s under extended aeration conditions
allow for a highly stable process. The result
is a stabilized and thickened waste activated
sludge product that is not offensive and easy
to handle. The sludge levels will be

ACTIVATED SLUDGE

Conventional activated sludge systems continue to be an effective treatment

process for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. Aqua-Aerobic provides
both batch treatment and flow-through systems with inherent characteristics and
capabilities that meet or exceed even the most stringent treatment objectives.

UMT Portfolio, pg. 39

BIOREACTORS
The Wastewater component (mostly free
of sludge) will be fed at an hourly rate to
the Bioreactors for further treatment.
The Bioreactors will remove remaining
nutrients, organics, and nitrogen from the
wastewater. Any sludge and suspended
solids will then be settled from the
wastewater via the final clarifier. After
clarification, the wastewater will undergo
sanitization in a chlorine contact tank.
The final effluent will be fit for discharge
to the Environment.
The Bioreactors tank are fitted with a
specialized Fixed- Film Media. The fixed film media provides an ideal surface area for the
bacteria, responsible for removing contaminants from the wastewater, to live upon. Fine
bubble aeration is installed under the media and provides the needed oxygen for the bacteria
(as well as circulation of the tanks).

CLARIFICATION & DISCHARGE

After the Bioreactors, the activated sludge and other suspended solids are separated from the
clear water under still conditions within a final clarifier. The settled sludge is sent back to the
Sludge Digester.
The clarifier, in turn, feeds the treated water to a contact storage tank where chlorine is added
to sanitize the treated wastewater (for public health & safety).

SLUDGE DRYING BED

Here the excess stabilizes sludge is
wasted to the drying bed where the
sludge is dried. Once dried the sludge is a
fraction of its former mass. A sludge
drying bed provides a low-tech and
economic solution for sludge dewatering.
The excess sludge is periodically drained
from the aerobic sludge digester and
spread over the drying bed. The water
passes through the sand bed leaving
behind the sludge. The sludge left behind
is then left to dry and then raked from the
sand surface. The water that passes
through the sand is directed back to the
aerobic sludge digester inlet. The dried
sludge is odorless and can be disposed of
by landfill, incineration, and even for
reuse application such as soil conditioner.

BOILER FEED WATER

The most common cause of overheating and failure of
boiler tubes is deposition on boiler surfaces. This
occurs due to precipitating impurities when water is
rapidly evaporated through a boiler. Even a very thin
layer of material can have significant impacts on boiler
efficiency. When deposition coats boiler pipes, it
becomes an insulator resisting heat transfer and
decreases the internal pipe diameter. This means more
fuel consumption is required to generate steam. This
may lead to overheating which may lead to distortion
and the eventual failure of the boiler tube – a
potentially dangerous outcome.
Boiler feed water must be demineralized to remove minerals such as silica and sodium.
Condensate coming from the compressor should be polished to remove any contamination and
can be recycled back into the boiler feed. Utilize UMT’s suite of demineralization products to
drive enhanced operational efficiency, safety and reliability for your steam generating system
so that you can focus on your core business – delivering more power to the grid.

COOLING WATER BLOWDOWN

Once the steam has passed through a turbine to
generate electricity, it must be cooled through a
condenser back to water before it can be reused to
produce more electricity. Cooling water is used to
remove heat from the steam circuit and is circulated
through a cooling tower where heat is dissipated via
evaporation to ambient air.

When water evaporates from the tower, dissolved

solids remain in the recirculating cooling water. As more water evaporates, the concentration
of dissolved solids increases. Eventually, the solids form scale, reducing thermal efficiency.
Cooling tower blowdown is used to control the concentration of dissolved solids, where highly
concentrated water is removed and replaced with fresh water.

Manage your cooling water with UMT’s offered membrane technology and zero liquid
discharge approach, to ensure the thermal efficiency and longevity of your cooling tower and
equipment. UMT’s complete offering of chemicals to prevent corrosion, deposition, fouling and
biological growth from derailing your operations.
