Gabriela: Good Day! Being prepared for the upcoming ‘The Big One’ will let us know what to
do without panicking. Each time there is a major disaster, lives are lost. Preparation can cut
down on the loss of lives, which is why you should have a plan in place in case there is an
earthquake. If an earthquake hits, you could lose power. You, and your family should prepare
and talk of where to go or a meeting place in case an emergency happens.

Dianah: earthquake, any sudden shaking of the ground caused by the passage of seismic waves
through Earth’s rocks. Seismic waves are produced when some form of energy stored in Earth’s
crust is suddenly released, usually when masses of rock straining against one another suddenly
fracture and “slip.” Earthquakes occur most often along geologic faults, narrow zones where
rock masses move in relation to one another. The major fault lines of the world are located at the
fringes of the huge tectonic plates that make up Earth’s crust.

Gabriela: Although the Earth looks like a pretty solid place from the surface, it’s actually
extremely active just below the surface. The Earth is made of four basic layers: a solid crust, a
hot, nearly solid mantle, a liquid outer core and a solid inner core. The solid crust and top, stiff
layer of the mantle make up a region called the lithosphere. The lithosphere isn’t a continuous
piece that wraps around the whole Earth like an eggshell. It’s actually made up of giant puzzle
pieces called tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are constantly shifting as they drift around on the
viscous, or slowly flowing, mantle layer below.

Dianah: How should we be prepared when an earthquake is hitting?

Here are 5 Things to do Before an Earthquake
1. Prepare as much as you can for every scenario if possible.
2. You should check whether you house is near a fault line or not.
3. If so, make a very understandable ang not confusing plan. The plan must contain the places
you and your family should go if ever an earthquake occurs. Another thing that must contain
your plan are the safest routes to take to go in the evacuation center that you’ve picked.
4. After you’ve planned, you can do some slight modification in your house to avoid injuries.
Such as avoiding placing heavy object in tall shelf. Because heavy object might fall and injure
you when an earthquake occurs. You can also secure heavy things such as refrigerator, tall and
big shelf, tv, monitor, furniture, appliances, and other things by strapping them to the wall to
avoid it from falling.
5. You must have a bag that you can survive on. This bag must contain essential things that can
help you to survive, things are Food, Water, Clothes, First Aid Kit, Flashlight, Extra Battery,
Cellphone,Whistle, and maybe Cash. These things can help you whenever an earthquake happen.

Gabriela:
During earthquake, you should:
1. Stay Calm, Cool, and Collected at most of the time.
2. If you are indoors stay there. Get under a desk or table and hang on to it (Drop, Cover,
and Hold on!) or move into a hallway or against an inside wall. Stay clear of windows,
fireplaces, and heavy furniture or appliances. Get out of the kitchen, which is a dangerous
place (things can fall on you). Don’t run downstairs or rush outside while the building is
shaking or while there is danger of falling and hurting yourself or being hit by falling
glass or debris. Wait until the shaking has stopped then proceed on evacuating.
3. If you are inside a building don’t use elevator it might fall and can cause you injuries
worst case, you can die from the impact of the elevator hitting the ground.
The best places to stay when an earthquake is hitting are Diliman, San Juan, Paranaque, and
Alabang West Village.

Diliman is more than 10 km far from the West Walley Fault line. There are lots of open land
and the architecture is solid. Diliman might be the safest location.

San Juan is fairly far from the fault line, it is about 10 km from the fault line. It has a
balanced/decent elevation.

Paranaque (Coastal Luxury Residences) is more than 12 km away from the fault line. The
elevation is good steady. A fair bit of open land too and the place is not too crowded and
compressed. It is prone to earthquakes that start near the coast from the sea.

Last is Alabang West Village, it is around 21 or 22 km away from the fault line. It has good
elevation and solid ground. The architecture is great, too. Just like Paranaque’s, the land is
open and the buildings are not close to each other.
Dianah:
4. If you are outside, get into the open, away from buildings, power lines, chimneys, and
anything else that might fall on you.
5. If you are Driving, stop, but carefully, move your car as far out of traffic as possible.
Don’t stop on or under a bridge, overpass, under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs.
Stay Inside your car until the shaking stops. When you resume driving, watch for breaks
in the pavement, fallen rocks, and bumps in the road at bridge approaches.
According to our knowledge (assuming that a year is 365.25 days), the Pacific plate has a
momentum of around 6.986 * 10^13 kilogram-meters/second, the North American plate has
a momentum of around 1.011 * 10^13 kilogram-meters/second, and the Eurasian plate has a
momentum of about 2.709 * 10^13 kilogram-meters/second.

Gabriela:
After an earthquake, just stay still because there might be aftershocks, you should:
1. Stay Calm, Cool, and Collected at most of the time.
2. Follow the things that the person in charge in your evacuation center said to avoid
problems.
3. Conduct a safety check. Once you are in a safe place, check yourself and others for
injuries, and call for help if needed. Look around to make sure you are not in danger from
other hazards caused by the quake, such as gas leaks or fire. Wear boots or sturdy shoes
to protect your feet from broken glass and debris.
4. Get help, if needed. If you are trapped, cover your mouth, nose, and eyes against dust.
Send a text and make noise to alert rescuers to your location.
5. Be prepared for aftershocks. Aftershocks can be as strong as the original quake

Dianah: With this video, we hope you had an idea of what to do when an earthquake happened.
Remember not to panic as it will make things worse. Always have a plan in every disaster to be
prepared. You can't prepare to win once and then just let success flow. Great performers possess
the will to prepare to win over and over again. If you are unprepared to meet a challenge, you
have little chance of succeeding. Or as Benjamin Franklin said, "By failing to prepare, you are
preparing to fail."
