CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Problem

English is an international language that everyone must be master.

English is very important to master and has been taught in several

countries. In Indonesia, English is taught at the primary, secondary, and

high school levels. English is very important for students because it will be

the foundation for students to learn English at a higher level. In learning

English, there are four abilities that must be mastered by students, namely

speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Besides, language also has

important elements such as grammar and vocabulary.

One of important element in English is vocabulary. In English

lessons, students must master the vocabulary well. Vocabulary is a core

component in language in language skills. Based on Richards, et al,

vocabulary is a core component of language proficiency and the basis for

how well the students speak, listen, read, and write1. It means that

vocabulary is a core component that must be mastered by students and it

becomes the basis for how good students are in speaking, listening,

reading, writing. In teaching and learning vocabulary, methods, techniques

and media are needed. Teaching vocabulary is not easy, it needs and

technique to make the students easier to learn easy to understand.

There are many techniques that can be taught to improve students

vocabulary, one of which is an Anagram technique. Anagram technique is

a word or phrase prepared random so that it is a new word. Collin in

ahdian said that anagram is a type of word play that made by arranging

and different order the later of another word phrase. It is a good technique

in teaching vocabulary and helpful for the students”.2

Furthermore, by using this technique, the students will not be bored

because this technique is appropriate to students characteristics which is

students incline more interested to play anagram. Many words will be got

through this technique. Automatically, this will increase students’

vocabulary. Applying this technique means to help students to raise their

curiosity to master more vocabulary. In more advance, students are forced

to memorize more words, so the students can create more words. It is also

to help students to monitor their vocabulary in short time.

Based on interview and observation with the English teacher and

some students in SMPN 4 Padang Panjang, the researcher found some

problems. First the students are still low motivation in learning English

because the student feel English is difficult. Second, the students are

difficult to remember vocabulary because the students low memorization

in learning vocabulary. It seen when the student don not know the

vocabulary, the student say to the teacher what the mean of vocabulary and

then the teacher told the student to open and dictionary. Third, the

technique in teaching vocabulary is monotonous, the students just

memorize

In addition, this technique provides many benefits namely students

can increase the vocabulary of several words through this technique.

Anagram techniques is not only improve the students memorize to remind

new vocabulary but also improve students’ motivation to find the answer

from this technique. So, in this research, the researcher interested to using

anagram technique in learning vocabulary.

Based on explanation above, finally the researcher conducted of

research by tittle The Effect of Anagram Technique to Improve

Vocabulary Mastery in 8th grade SMPN 4 Padang Panjang.

B. Identification of the problem

Based on the background of the problem above, several problems

that occur in teaching vocabulary at SMPN 4 Padang Panjang can be

summarized as follow:

1. The students are still low motivation

2. The students are difficult to remember vocabulary and forget easily of

vocabulary

3. The way the teacher teaches vocabulary makes the students bore

because of monotonous teaching.

C. Limitation of the Problem

Based on identification of the problem above, this research limits

on students’ vocabulary mastery using anagram technique at eight grade of

SMPN 4 Padang Panjang .

D. Formulation of the problem

Based on the limitation of the problem, the problem in this research

is formulated by following question :

1. Is there any significant effect on the use of Anagram Technique to

improve students’ vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students in

SMPN 4 Padang Panjang?

2. Is there any significant difference between students’ who are using

Anagram Technique and students’ who are using conventional

technique?

3. Is the students’ vocabulary mastery using Anagram Technique better

than students’ who are using conventional technique?

E. Purpose of the research

Based on the formulation of the problem above, the objectives of

this study are as follows:

1. To find out whether there is a significant effect of Anagram

Technique to improve the vocabulary students’ at the eighth grade

students at SMPN 04 Padang Panjang.

2. To find out whether there are significant difference between

students’ who are using Anagram Technique and verses students’

who are using conventional technique.

3. To find out whether students’ vocabulary mastery using Anagram

Technique is better than students’ who are using conventional

technique.

F. Significance of the research

This research is very useful because it can contribute to students,

teachers and of course also to researchers:

1. For teacher, this research will provide new knowledge for teachers

regarding the use of technique for teaching vocabulary.

2. For students, this research give contribution to students which is

students will be interested in learning English and improve the students

vocabulary in English in a relaxed and fun way.

3. For researcher, this research give more experience and knowledge to

the researcher using Anagram as a technique and also this research is

as a fulfillment of requirements for researcher to be able to graduate in

a one-degree study program.

4. For the next researcher, it can be used as references for their research

in the feature

G. Definition of Key Terms

To avoid mistakes from the title of this research, the researcher

will explain the terms which are in the title of this study:

1. Effect is a change that occurs in students vocabulary mastery with the use of

technique in vocabulary teaching techniques.

2. Vocabulary mastery is the complete knowledge of a list or a set of words that

make up the language.

3. Anagram is play of word, it can be arranged of word, fill and blank of word

until it make a new word.
