HIERARCHY OF ROADS>
For the purpose of geometric design, urban roads are classified into following
categories:
Expressway
Arterial

b-Arterial
iv. Collector road Street/local road
vi. pathway

Through Truffle
and 9peed
Freeway

Dietclbutoc

EXPRESSWAY
• The purpose of expressway is to cater for mo ty of large volume of traffic at
high speed.
ded highway with high standards of geometrics.
• Full or partial control of access
• Vehicle parking, loading and unloading of products and passengers and pedestrian
traffic are not
allowed on these kind of highways.
ARTERIAL ROAD
• The road that connects the town to a state highway or a national highway is
termed as arterial
road.
• It passes within the city limits and carries great masses of traffic between
different parts of
the. town.
• This include ring rDad, by pass rDads etc. as they allow free movement of fast
traffic at
higher speed.
• These road kept clean of all obstruction such as frontageof building,
parking places,
loading and unloading.

SUB ARTERIAL ROADS

• These roads are also known as the major roads or secondary roads.
• They are contained within city limits and they connected important town centres.
• These roads serve slow moving traffic over short distances.
• The intersection of these roads are provided with suitable traffic signals.

COLLECTOR ROAD
• These are also known as minor roads. They collect traffic from various arts of
the town and
leads it to another minor or major road.
• These may be located in residential nei ds, business areas and
industrial
areas. Normally, full access is allowed on these rDads from abutting properties.
• There are few parking restrictions excepted during the peak hours.

LCCAL RIAD/ STREET

• These are intended primarily to provide access to abutting property and
normally do
not carry large volume of traffic. Majority of trips in urban areas either
originated from or
terminated on these streets.
• Local streets may be residential, commercial industrial, depending on
the predominant
use of the adjoining land. They allow unrestricted parking and pedestrian
movements.
PATHV?
• ThesR are also known as the pedestrian ways and they are in the form of accesses
leading to
individual shops or premises.
• The vehicular traffic is not allowed to move on the pathway.

• Indian cities are expanding and therefore urban transport has gained
regional importance.

’Fhc design speed and carriageway width for different types of raad, as recommended
recently’ by
MoUD may be seen in Table 8.2 & 8.3:

Schematic sketch of traffic in lndla on the 4 categories of roads.

According to IRC: 86-1983 (Geometric Design Standards for urban Roads in

Plains, Indian Road
Congress 1983) the urban roads other than express way are classified in four main
categories.

• Right of way: right of way is the area of land acquire and reserved for
construction and
development of road, along its alignment.
• Formation width: formation width is the sum of carriage way or
pavement, shoulders
and separators (if any). It is the top width of highway embankment or
bottom width of the
highway cutting.
• Road margins: road margins are the portions of land on both side of road ways of
road.
• Width of pavement (carriage way): carriage way is the width of the road way
constructed for
movement of vehicular trafiic carriage way width depends on the width of
trafiic lane and
number of lanes required.

• Shoulder: shoulder are the portion of the outer edges of the carriage way and
edges of the top
surface of embankment or inner edge of the side drawn in cubing.
• Side slope: it is the slope provided to the sides of ea%hwork of a road in
embankment or for
its stability side slopes in a road are so designed to keep the earth work
stable in
embankment or in cutting.
• kerj¿: kerb are the boundaries between the pavement and shoulder or footpath
ke¿l¿ are
also provided between pavements and road separator or dividing island.
• Camber: camber is the transverse slope provided to the road surface to drain ofi
the water from
the road the road surface. It is called cross- slope.
• Gmdient: Gradient is the rate of rise and fall of road surface along its Ien@h
with respect to
the horizontal.

GEOMETRIC OF ROAD
• Appropriate geometric design standards on urban road is essential to endure the
safety to all
roads users. !
• A design of the entire road cross-section holds considerable importance as,
• It governs the design speed of vehicles
• RefleCs prioritization in space allocation
• Introduces concept of universal design

• Geometric design of highways/Road deals with the dimension & layout of visible
features such as
horizontal and vertical alignments, sight distance and intersections.
• Elements of geometric design as follow:
1. Cross section element
2. Sight distance considerations
3. Horizontal alignment details
4. Vertical alignment details
+ 5. Intersection details

• Medians and dividers are raised barriers that separate the street in
two halves and direct traFic flows.
• Medians helps to streamlines trafiic and avoid conflict between traffic
moving in opposite directions.
• Wider medians are preferred wherever possible (depending on ROW of road and
specified footpath
width) so that refuge islands of adequate width can be provided for pedestrian
crossing at
interseuions and mid block location.
