Physics

Name: Trish Anand Date: 13-9-2021

STATEMENT OF INQUIRY
Developments in our understanding of basic science, e.g. of changes of state, have led to technological breakthroughs
that have resulted in major changes in society.

Key concept: Systems

Related Concept: Energy, development, transformation
Global Context: Orientation in time and space – an exploration into how the invention of the steam engine contributed to
the Industrial Revolution.

Starter TASK:
What is the difference between heat and temperature?
Heat Temperature
Temperature is the average kinetic
energy of a molecule
Heat is a type f energy S.I unit is Kelvin
S.I unit is joule

TASK 1:
Explain evaporation on the basis of molecular theory by completing the following
sentences.

• 1. Evaporation is a change of phase from liquid to gas State

• 2. When particles in the liquid phase are heated, they gain thermal energy and move
faster

• 3. The inter molecular bonds between the particles are broken and the distance
between the particles increase

• 4. The force of attraction between these high energy liquid particles now decrease

• 5. These free particles now move faster and turn into gas. This is evaporation.

TASK 2:
Research and explain why…

When a liquid is evaporating, why does the process of evaporation cause the
liquid to cool down.

Use kinetic particle theory to explain what is happening at a molecular level.

A process were particles with highest energy which are on the surface as heat rises,
spread so far apart that it changes its matter to gas from liquid. Since the hottest
particles of the substance is leaving, there would be a greater absence in hotter or high
in energy particles
TASK 3:
What factors effect the rate of evaporation?
1
Humidity
2
Wind speed
3
Surface area
4
Outside temperature emperature
5
volume
