Functionalist:

In the movie Mean Girls within the school there are cliques that are made up of people with
similar interests. Without these groups the school would go to wack. An example of this is when
Regina released the burn book and the girls were going crazy on each other and even on their
own friends. This would be an extreme example of if there were no groups and how without
them then it would be wild because people would take differences and think of them as a
negative.
Conflict:
In the movie Mean Girls when Kady got invited to be friends with the plastis, the dress code of
the plastics would be an example of the conflict theory. Within the time that the plastics have
been friends, Regina decided sometime what they were allowed and not allowed to wear
throughout the school week. An example of this is on Wednesday they wear pink, they can only
wear their hair up once a week, and they can only wear sweatpants on fridays. Because of all
these rules everyone within their group has to abide by these rules or they can't sit together.
With deviance, when Regina showed up to school on a monday wearing sweatpants and
Gretchen reminded her of the rules then yelled at her to leave. This is deviance with the conflict
theory because she didn’t follow the group's dress code and therefore had to leave.
Control theory:
In the movie Mean Girls the way in which Janice acts towards others and in general is an
example of control theory with deviance. Janice dresses sort of goth and acts kind of hard and
rude towards some. One of the times she acted this way was when she was introducing herself
to Kady and the guy walked by her and asked what her wig was made of. Janice is very blunt
and doesn’t care about the way others perceive her. In comparison, everyone else in the movie
was searching for approval and validation from others.
Cultural Transmission theory:
In the movie Mean Girls when the girls went to Regina’s house after going to the mall, the way
Regina’s mom acts is an example of the cultural transmission theory. The whole environment in
Regina’s house is different from Kady’s house. For instance, when they first walked in the door
Regina’s sister was dancing inappropriately to a music video and when Regina’s mom offered to
put alcohol in the drinks. This explains this theory because it shows the difference in how each
girl was raised and how it affects them as they grow up. Regina got treated as a brat growing up
so now she acts like a brat while Kady was raised with manners so she's respectful.
Labeling theory:
In the movie Mean Girls where people sit at lunch and they're table group names are the prime
example of labeling theory. Where each person at this school sits and who they hang out with
gives them a label in which they are stuck with. Some of these groups are the plastics, jocks,
nerds, burnouts, and wannabes. Each person in these groups accept that they are in this group
and act more like it. Like when Kady started hanging out with the plastics as a joke but ending
up acting like them.
