Man has nurtured the earth and transformed it for as long as he has existed on this planet. In order
to exist, the fauna and flora must be in good shape. In addition to these, Man not only marked his
position in the world through his efforts, but he also marked his place in the world through his
necessities. Man built infrastructures that cared to his needs with his bare hands. Requirements, such
as his home. Swords and spears were honed by him. He used fire to his advantage.in order to melt the
gold The original definition of the term "art" has to do with creativity.

• ART is derived from the Latin word ars, which meaning "craft."or a highly specialized skill such as carpentry,
smithy, or surgery"(1938) (Collingwood)
• ARS came to mean something different in Medieval Latin. It signified "anything."a specific type of book-
learning, such as grammar or logic, magic, or astronomy"astrology" is a term used to describe the study of
the (Collingwood, 1938). It was only during the Renaissance that it became popular.that the word needed to
HUMANITY have a meaning that was present in its original formcraft.

Cave of Altamira is a cave complex in Cantabria, Spain, near the
medieval town of Santillana del Mar. It's known for its
prehistoric parietal cave art, which includes charcoal drawings
and polychrome paintings of current wildlife and human hands.
The first paintings were created roughly 36,000 years ago, during
the Upper Paleolithic period.[1] The site was found in 1868 by
Modesto Cubillas and later investigated by Marcelino Sanz de
Sautuola.

ART is UNIVERSAL

• There is always art in every country and in every generation. People frequently believe
that only certain types of art are deemed artistic. Which were created a long time
ago This is a misunderstanding.
AGE DOESN'T MATTER IN THE DETERMINATION OF ART

“An art is not good because it is old, but old because it is good”
ART is not NATURE

One important characteristic of art is that it is not nature. Art is
man’s expression of his reception of nature. Art is man’s way of
interpreting nature. ART IS NOT NATURE. ART IS MADE BY
MAN, whereas nature is a given around us. What we find in nature
should not be expected to be present in art too. Movies are not meant
to be direct representation of reality. They may, according to the
moviemaker’s perception of reality, be a reinterpretation or even
distortion of nature.
ART involves EXPERIENCE

Art is just experience. By experience, we mean the “the actual doing of
something” (Dudley et al., 1960).
When one says that he has an
experience of something, he often means that he knows what that
something is about. When one claims that he has experienced falling in
love, getting hurt and bouncing back, he in effect claims that he knows
the (sometimes) endless cycle of loving. Knowing a thing is different from
hearing from others what the said thing is.
“All art depends on experience, and if one is to know art, he
must know if not as fact or information but as experience”

1. Individual Function - The artist perform art because it’s their passion and somehow they wanted
to share their purpose in creating such craft and artwork.
2. Social Function - Man associates with clothes through his art that arouses social consciousness
3. Economic Function - Arts are emerging as a potent force in the economic life of people assumes
an essential role as a direct and indirect contributor to state economies.
4. Political Function - Arts provide a forum forbidders that will lead to employment, prestige, status
and power.
5. Historical Function - Art is an essential technique for information to be recorded and preserved.

6. Cultural Functions - Art is the expression and dissemination of new ideas and values.
7. Physical Functions - Buildings are created and built in an artistic manner to protect their residents
and make their lives more meaningful.
8. Aesthetic Functions - Any work of art is beautiful. It serves as a visual spice for elegantly
decorated spaces, bringing out the most exquisite qualities of various décor pieces.

PURPOSE OF ARTS

A. Create Beauty - Art is a means of expressing our feelings, emotions, and intuitions. It is the
conveyance of ideas that cannot be accurately conveyed through words alone.
B. Provide Decoration - Artworks are used to create a pleasing environment.
C. Reveal the Truth - Artwork aided in the search for truth and aimed to reveal how the world
functions. It is a type of language that allows artists to communicate with the recipients' souls
in order to modify their attitudes, sensibilities, and ethics.
D. Express Values - Arts may reveal our inner life and enrich our emotional environment, therefore
they can help us express our values. Artists will be encouraged to enhance their creativity,
challenge, and communication skills through the arts. It also boosts one's self-esteem and well-
being.

E. Commemorate Experience – arts serve to convey the personal experience of an artist and record
his impression in his work.
F. Create Harmony – An artist make use of the composition to put an order in the diverse content of
his work.

1. Visual Arts – these are those forms that create works which are primarily visual.

1.1 Painting – this form of visual art aims to evoke an emotion from the viewers.
1.2 Sculpture – this forms of visual arts characterized as the art of representing an imagined or
observed objects in hard materials such us glass, metals, or wood in three dimensions.
1.3 Architecture – this forms of art provides us the physical structure we lived.
1.4 Drawing – this form of art enhances the way wee the world around and conditions us to capture
its details in a two dimensional medium.
1.5 Photography – this form of arts is a process of creating portraits by recording radiation on a
radiation-sensitive medium.

2. Performing Arts – these arts are those in which the artist used his/her own body, face, and
presence as a medium.

2.1 Theatre (Drama) – this form of art uses performers to present experience of a real or imagined
event before a live audience in a specific place and time.
2.3 Music – this form of art helps us to express our mood and feel the way through our emotions and
ideas.
2.4 Dance – this form of art is expressed through body movement which entails social interaction or
presented in a spiritual or performing setting.
2. 5 Film – this form of art allows us to explore the complexities of the human situation.

2.6 Installation Art – the fundamental nature of this form of art is the participation og
the spectators.
2.7 Opera - This form of art helps to tell stories through music.
2.7 Stagecraft - This form of art is a technical aspect of theatrical production.

3. Literary arts - These arts centered on creative writing and other composition processes
which intended to read.

ART AS AN IMITATION

In Plato’s The Republic, “paints a picture of artists as imitators and art as mere imitation.”
In his description of the ideal republic, Plato advises against the inclusion of art as a subject in the
curriculum and the banning of artists in the Republic.
In Plato’s metaphysics or view of reality, the things in this world are only “copies of the original,
the eternal, and the true entities that can only be found in the World of Forms.”

Plato was deeply suspicious of arts and artists for two reasons:
1. They appeal to the emotion rather to the rational faculty of men
2. They imitate rather than lead one to reality.

Poetry rouses emotions and feelings and thus, clouds rationality of people.

“Art is just an imitation of imitation. A painting is just an imitation of nature, which is also
just an imitation of reality in the World of Forms.”

Art then is to be banished, alongside the practitioners, so that the attitudes and actions
of the members of the Republic will not be corrupted by the influence of the arts.

• For Plato, art is dangerous because it provides


a petty replacement for the real entities than can
only be attained through reason.

ART AS A REPRESENTATION

Aristotle, agreed with Plato that art is a form of imitation.


• However, Aristotle considered art as an aid to philosophy in revealing the truth.
• The kind of imitation that art does is not antithetical to the reaching of fundamental truths in
the world.
Unlike Plato who thought that art is an imitation of another imitation, Aristotle conceived of art
as representing possible versions of reality.

For Aristotle, all kinds of art do not aim to represent reality as it is, it endeavors to
provide a version of what might be or the myriad possibilities of reality.

ART AS A REPRESENTATION

•In Aristotelian worldview, art serves two particular purposes:


• Art allows for the experience of pleasure (horrible experience can be
made an object of
humor)
• Art also has an ability to be instructive and teach its audience things
about life
(cognitive).

ART AS A DISINTERESTED JUDGMENT

Immanuel Kant, in his Critique of Judgment, considered the judgment of beauty, the
cornerstone of art, as something that can be universal despite its subjectivity.
• Kant recognized that judgment of beauty is subjective.
• However, even subjective judgments are based on some universal criterion for the said
judgment.

ART AS A COMMUNICATION OF EMOTION

• According to Leo Tolstoy, art plays a huge role in communication to its audience’s emotions that
the artist previously experienced.
• In the same that language communicates information to other people, art communicates
• As a purveyor of man’s innermost feelings and thoughts, art is given a unique opportunity to serve
as a mechanism for social unity.
• Art is central to man’s existence because it makes accessible feelings and emotions of people from
the past and present emotions.
