WHAT IS HAZING?

Hazing is any reckless or intentional act that produces physical, mental, or

emotional pain, discomfort, humiliation, embarrassment, or ridicule,
regardless of a person’s willingness to participate, that is required or
expected of a member or a provisional member and that is not related to
the Fraternity’s mission.
PHI MU’S DEFINITION
Our definition of hazing includes any activity, whether it is
presented as option or required, that places a member or
provisional member in a position of servitude as a
condition of membership.
ELEMENTS OF HEALTH THAT CAN BE AFFECTED BY HAZING
● PHYSICAL
● EMOTIONAL
● MENTAL

NOT CONSIDERED ACCORDING TO CONTRACT:

● SPIRITUAL
● SOCIAL
SUBTLE HAZING
Behaviors that emphasize a power imbalance between members. Termed
“subtle hazing” because these types of hazing are often taken-for-granted or
accepted as “harmless” or meaningless. Subtle hazing typically involves
activities or attitudes that breach reasonable standards of mutual respect and
places members on the receiving end of ridicule, embarrassment and/or
humiliation tactics. New members often feel the need to endure subtle hazing
to feel like part of the group or team.
HARASSMENT HAZING
Behaviors that cause emotional anguish or physical discomfort in
order to feel like part of the group. Harassment hazing confuses,
frustrates and causes undue stress for new members.
VIOLENT HAZING
Behaviors that have the potential to cause physical and/or
emotional, or psychological harm.
PHI MU HAZING POLICY
The term “hazing” means any intentional, knowing, or reckless act
committed by a person, whether individually or in concert with other
persons, against any individual or group of individuals, regardless of
affiliation, whether or not committed on chapter property, for the
purpose of recruiting, joining, pledging, initiating, admitting,
affiliating, or for the purpose of continued membership or enhanced
status in an organization that causes an individual or group of
individuals to do any of the following, regardless of a person’s
willingness to participate.
HOW DO PHI MU’S VALUES ALIGN WITH HAZING?
The ideals of Phi Mu, as expressed in our Creed, are Love, Honor, and Truth. In

addition, Phi Mu remains committed to helping members reach their potential

through the building of character, leadership, sisterhood and community

service. Membership in Phi Mu helps women become better versions of

themselves and hazing contradicts this purpose. These principles remind us

that hazing has no place in our Fraternity.
