Sober Monitor

Purpose of Sober Monitors
You have the responsibility of helping to monitor social events in order to provide a safe
social environment. You are charged with monitoring social events and following risk
management policy, as well as the policies of WCU.
Expectations
- Monitors are not to consume alcohol or any other substance for a reasonable amount
of time prior to and during the social event
- Keep our sisters safe! You need to look out for your sisters and make sure that
everyone stays safe at this event
Expectations
- You should be walking around the event making sure all sisters and guests are acting
maturely
- Make sisters aware that you are a sober monitor so they know they can come to you
if they need you
- There should be at least two sober monitors in every building there is and two outside
of the buildings for those sisters who are outside
Responsibilities
- You should have your cell phone on you to be able to call 911 in case of an
emergency (if this happens please notify Graham about it immediately)
- You have the right to deny access to the event to anyone (sisters or dates) who you
think are impaired by alcohol or drugs
- Be prepared to ask sisters/dates to leave if they become too intoxicated or behave
inappropriately (if this happens find Martha or Graham)
Responsibilities

- You should respond to any disruptions that take place at the event
- Do NOT allow sisters/dates to leave the event with alcohol
- Be prepared to transport sisters/dates home if they are too impaired
Conflict Management
To calm potentially disruptive sisters/dates:
- Gauge the level of your response to the person's behavior
- Make clear statements, speak directly and to the point
- Use the first person “I” (I am sorry I cannot let you…)
- Be non-judgemental and non-threatening
- Give a reason for your actions
Conflict Management
Things that complicate or escalate conflict:
- Antagonizing, humiliating, and embarrassing a guest in front of others
- Threatening a guest
- Physically restraining a guest
Recognizing the Signs
If any of these signs are being shown by a sister...find Martha or Graham.
- Unconsciousness
- Slow-breathing
- Cold,clammy to the touch
- Skin discoloration
- Does not respond
- Cannot stand up
- Will not wake up
- Rapid pulse rate
Dealing with the police
If the police arrive at the event
- Be polite and courteous
- Be sober
- Have Graham or Martha talk to them if one of us are sober and present
The police understand and respect our policies
- But are still required to enforce the law and noise complaints
Don’t start off on the wrong foot
- Officers are typically assigned to the same neighborhoods throughout the year
