120 word assignment-Sports

Week 1. Rally racing

1. Bonnet= The hinged cover over the motor of a car. „You have got to
open the bonnet so I can fill your windshield wiper fluid“.
2. Emission= Chemicals in exhaust gases that are harmful to the air.
Scientist all over the globe test their countries emissions and compare
them to other countries.

3. Alternator= Generator of electric power in a car. The alternator has


stopped working, it doesn´t convert the mechanical energy to my
battery.

4. Radiator= Helps with getting excess heat from the engine. I am going to
buy a bigger radiator for my sports car since it needs more cooling.

5. Rims= The steel wheel that your tires go on. The black 18 inch rims are
looking good on my white car. I got my self some bigger rims for my new
car for it´s looks.

6. Oil filter= Filters the junk out of your motoroil to keep it running smooth.
You will need to change your oil filter when you go change your motor
oil.

7. Hybrid= When cars use both petrol/diesel and electric motors to power
it. Many cars today use hybrid technoligy for financial benefits.

8. Gasket= Are sealings and cushioning material that is placed between


parts that are joined by bolts. Gaskets ensure maximum compression for
your engine parts.

9. Frunk= Front trunk. Many electric cars have frunks since they dont have
an engine in the front.
10. Mud flap= Protects the car from mud and dirt from the wheel. Every off
road car has mud flaps to prevent the dirt from splashing all over the
vehicle.
Week 2. Basketball

1. Sixth man= The first player that subsitutes to the court in a game. Many
players like being the sixth man instead of being in the starting lineup.

2. Alley-oop= When a passer throws the ball near the the rim and another
player comes and catches it and either slams or lays it in the hoop all in
mid air. What a great alley-oop from Lonzo ball to Zion who slams it
home.

3. Point guard= The guys who handles the ball on the court and calls the
plays. A true point guard is unselfish and smart and needs to know how
to control the offence..

4. Brick= A badly missed shot in basketball. This man could build a brickwall
he is shooting the ball so bad.

5. Backboard= A board behind the hoop that the ball will rebound off.
When I go in to a layup I will everytime aim at the corner of the small
box drawn on the backboard.
6. MVP= Most valuable player. Michael jordan has won many MVP´s over
his years of playing.

7. Overtime= A five minute extra period that is played if the game is tied
after 4 quarters. Overtime are often very intense and exciting.

8. Bounce pass= A pass that bounces off the floor before it reaches the
receiver. The fans made a good amount of noise when Lebron threw a
perfect bounce pass.

9. Drive= Making a fast and hard dribble heading to the basket to score.
Quick players are good at driving to the basket.

10. Travelling= To move the ball without dribbling. Players really need to
practice their footwork so they dont travel.
Week 3. Football

1. Cleats= The plastic or metallic bumps on the sole of football shoes. Also
used for the shoes themselves. I need new cleats, mine are very worn.

2. Cracker= A breathtaking football goal or match. He scored an absolute


cracker from great distance.

3. Dive= The exaggerated falling move of a player to deceive the referee in


order to win their team a foul call. He got a yellow card for a terrible
dive.

4. Howler= An inexplicable mistake by a player that generally proves costly.


His terrible howler cost his team a goal.

5. Corner= a free kick taken from the corner of the field after the defending
side has played the ball behind their own goal line. Its a great corner
pass from him that ended as a goal.

6. Full. A defender that is positioned in front of the goalkeeper. He has


went from a winger to a fullback.

7. Golden goal= The first goal scored in extra time, wich wins the match.
This the best golden goal in history.

8. Nutmeg= Putting the ball between someone´s legs. He got past his
player with a brilliant nutmeg.

9. Reserves= Players that come in for players in the main team if they get
injured or cant play. The guy is not good enough for the team, so he
plays a reserve.

10. Winger= A player positioned on the wing. He has alot of pace so he


plays as a winger.
Week 4. Drag racing

1. Launch= Extremely quick acceleration from a complete stop while in a


car. This car has the power for a very quick launch.
2. Burnout= Spinning the rear wheels to heat the tire up for better traction.
BMW car are known for burnouts since most of their cars are rear wheel
drived
3. Digger= Another word for dragster. They car and the driver make a great
dragster team.
4. Flopper= A funny car. His car is a total flopper, it has no doors.

5. Hides= Another word for tires. He was smokin the hides.

6. Slick= Racing tire that does not have thread. His slick tires are very
grippy.

7. Strip= Slang term for the finish line. He just passed the strip before him.

8. Straight piped= An exhaust system that has no mufflers for a louder


sound and more airflow. His straight piped car sounds amazing.

9. Groove= Path of traction laid down vehicles. Try to stay on the groove, it
has more traction.

10. Rail= Another word for a dragster. He has a great team of railers.

Week 5. Handball

1. Charging= An offensive player runs into or over a stationary player who


is in proper position. He was called for charging

2. Checking= Body contact between attacker and defender with the torso
and limb as permitted by the rules. He was booked in the referee´s book
for checking

3. Circle= The nickname for the goal area line. The players are not allowed
to shoot inside the circle
4. Court player= A team player other than the goalkeeper= The court
players run the most.

5. Dive shot= A means of scoring by launching the body into the air toward
the goal while making the throw. He got closer to the goal by doing a
dive shot.

6. Flagrant foul= Violations such as rough body contact and


unsportsmanlike foul. His anger made him do a flagrant foul.

7. Held ball= A ball held more than 3 seconds. The other team got the ball
because of an held ball.

8. Throw off= When the goalkepper throws the ball in to play. The keeper
throws a great throw off right in to the players lane.

9. Attack= when the team or a individual tries to score when they are in
possesion of the ball. The team are on a fast attack.

10. Harpastum= An ancient Roman event wich athletes threw a ball around.
It is believed to be one of the sports that is belived to be the root of
handball. When Hercules was young he loved Harpastum.

Week 6. Tennis

1. A winnig serve which the receiver fails to touch with his racket. Bryan
won it it with a briliant serve.

2. Backhand= When the ball is struck on the oppisite side of the body to
the racquet hand. His strenght is in his backahand, he can receive from
anywhere

3. Break= To beat an opponent in a game in wich the opponent is serving.


He got off to a good start by breaking his opponent´s serve in the first
game.

4. Deuce= A score of 40-40, after, the game must be played until someone
has won by 2 points. It was a really exciting game. They went through a
deuce before he won.
5. Drop shot= a fentle shot that just drops over the net. He fooled him with
a good drop shot.

6. Fault= a missed serve. Served into the net or outside the court. Mary
tried to be smart and serve it with a soft shot, but hit the net and was a
fault.

7. Love= zero(this meaning is use only in tennis). After five minutes of


gameplay the score is love-ten.

8. Let= A shot that must be replayed. The refferee heard the ball clip the
net so he called a let.

9. Rally= A long series of shots. The longest rally was 14 shots before a
winner was hit.

10. Umpire= the official who is in overall charge of a match. How can the
umpire sit so high from the ground in that huge chair?

Week 7. Athletics

1. Baton= A short stick or tube passed from runner to runner in a relay


race. He dropped the baton leading to a loss for his team.

2. Bell lap= The final lap in a distance race, signalled by the ringing of a bell.
Its getting very exciting, we are on to the bell lap.

3. Discus= A heavy disk that the atheltes throw as far as they can. The
discus throw is one of the oldest events in athletics.

4. Hammer= A heavy metal ball attached to a wire for throwing. If you


want to be succesful in the hammer throwing event, you need good
form and strength.

5. Javelin= A lightweight, spear-like object; the sport of throwing the


javelin. The javelin throwers need to have alot of room to be able to
compete.
6. Relay= Race between teams of runners in wich each team member in
turns covers a part of the total distance. If you cant run far, compete in
relay, there you need to run the whole track.

7. Steeplechase= A running race in wich competitors must clear hurdles


and water jumps. If you want to get creative compete in steeplechase.

8. Tripled jump= A competition where players run and take a hop, a step
and a jump. You need good sprinting technique combined with good
jumping technique.

9. Heptathlon= A women´s athletic competition combining 7 track and field


events. You need great endurance to compete in a heptathlon.

10. Decathlon= A men´s athletic competition combining 10 track and field


events. If you are planning to compete in a decathlon you need to be
good in many things.

Week 8. Computer terms

1. Avatar= A player character. What pokemon avatar would pick Ásrún?


Squirtle?

2. Buff= A beneficila effect planed on a character to make them stronger.


Angelo buffed his squad for better defense.

3. Bunny hop= The act of jumping in a first-person shooter. If you are good
at bunny hopping you can be faster then other running players.

4. Cutscene= A scene when the players in the game continue the story on
there own, often talkingto other players. A good game needs good
cutscenes to keep the plot exciting.

5. Fall damage= When a player falls/jumps of a tall drop and takes damage.
Dont go down there, you will receive fall damage.

6. Kill streak= When you get more then 1 kill without dying.

7. Lag= When your internet network is bad and the game freezes a multiple
times. That was so unfair, I laged.

9. Pog= Play of game. His incredible shot picked as the pog.

10. RPG= Role-playing game. A new version of fifa came out today, its a RPG

Week 9. Volley ball

1. Set= the second contact after the pass. His great set let him smash the
ball, ending in a point for them.

2. Dig= The first contact after a player on the other team sends the ball
over. He had to throw himself on the ground to get the dig, what a play!!

3. Stuff block= When a defensive player jumps and stops the ball that is
being sent over by the other team. His height let him stuff block the ball
well.

4. Tool= The ball is deflected by a blocker but falls to the floor either
outside the court or onto the court on the side as the blocker. His effort
ended in a tool, unlucky.

5. Platform= Refers ti the forearms when they are put together by holding
both hands together to create a bigger surface for the ball to bounce off.
His great pltaform technique let´s him pass the ball easily.

6. Pancake= When a pleyr lands on the floor with their body in an attempt
to save the with flat and open arms. His pancake saved his team from
losing.

7. Float serve= When the ball doesn´t spin in the air. Often changes
direction in mid air. That float serve changed direction and confused the
other team.

8. Rally= When the ball is in play= This rally is very exciting.

9. Let serve= When the serve hits the net and continues over to the
receiving team. They were to far from the net to get the let serve.
10. Match= A match is a predeterminde number of games, often best or 3
or 5 games.

Week 10. Rugby

1. Ankle tap= A form of tackel where the defender is behind the attacker=
His ankle tap prevented them from a touch down.

2. Centre= The players wearing shirts number 12 and 13, they are divided
into inside and outside centre. They have a great quality centre.

3. Drop kick= A drop kick is when a player kicks the ball from hand and the
ball touches the ground between being dropped and kicked. If a drop
kick goes through a goal then it results in a drop goal. His drop kicks was
stunning.

4. Fourth official= A fourth official is one who controls replacements and


substitutes. The fourth official calls for a substitutes.

5. Garryown= Is a high short punt onto or behind the defending team. That
was a great Garryown by John Snow.

6. Hospital pass. A paas that puts the passers teammate in danger. That
was a scary hospital pass.

7. Sin bin= The place where players who receive a yellow card are sent to
sit for 10 minutes. He was sent to the sin bin.

8. Knock on= Dropping the ball in a forward direction. I f this is done


intentionally it can reslult in a penalty. That knock on must end in a
penalty

9. Scrum= A contest for the ball invlolving eigth players who bind together
and push against the other team´s assembled eight for possession of the
ball. Tough players need to be in the scrum.

10. Ruck= One or more players from each team, who are on their their feet
and in contact, close around the ball on the ground. Once a ruck has
been formed, players can´t use their hands to get the ball, only their
feet. Good to have strong legs in a ruck right?

Week 11. Badminton

1. Alley= Extension of the court by 1 ½ feet on both sides for doubles play.
Its time for the alley.

2. Carry= When the shuttle is held on the racquet then slung over the net.
That was a carry, so no point.

3. Drive= A fast and low shot that makes a horizontal flight over the net. He
stood no chance against that drive.

4. Drop= A shot hit sohly and with finesse to fall rapidly and close to the
net and the opponent´s side. He almost defendid that drop shot.

5. Flick= A quick wrist and forearm rotation to suprise the opponent. He


did not see that flick coming.

6. Kill= Fast downward shot that cannot be returned. He ended the game
with a great kill.

7. Rally= Exchange of shot while the shuttle is in play. How long is this
going to be.

8. Wood shot= Shot that results when the base of the shuttle is hit by the
frame of the racquet. Good things it isn´t 1962, otherwise that wood
shot would have been illegal.

9. Forecourt= Front third of the court, between the net and the short
service line. You can serve on the forecourt.

10. Clear= A shot hit deep to the opponents´s back bounder. He hit a clear
in defense.

Week 12. Chess

1. Action chess= A game where each player only has 30 minutes to make all
his moves. If you are not good at waiting play action chess.
2. Back rank= The rank where a player sets up his major pieces. His queen
is at the back rank.

3. Blunder= Bad moves that turn into a loss or a draw. His blunder lost him
the game.

4. Blitz= Fast chess. You need to think fast when playing a blitz.

5. Castle when you king 2 squares to an unmoved rook and to move the
rook on the other side of the king. A castle is a great defensive move.

6. Fool‘s mate= A 2 move mate. He is clearly not good, he let him fool mate
him.

7. Fork= A double attack, when a piece is attacking 2 pieces at the same


time. His knight is forking the queen and king.

8. Grandmaster= Someone with the highest internation chess title. He is


the grandmaster of his country.

9. Knight= The piece that looks like a horse and moves in an L shape. His
knight is in the way of him mating him.

10. Patzer= A weak chess player. He is still a patzer.
