Homework 22

For all problems, begin with an Official Starting Equation or an appropriate modification
of an Official Starting Equation. [Remember to provide magnitude and direction if
instructed to determine a vector.]

1. An object is located 25cm from a lens with a focal length of 10cm.

a. Use a calculation to determine the location, type (real or virtual),
orientation (upright or inverted) and magnification of the image.
b. Use a ray diagram to determine the location, orientation and magnification
of the image. [Remember to show the image on the diagram.]

2. An object is located 25cm from a lens with a focal length of −10cm.

a. Use a calculation to determine the location, type (real or virtual),
orientation (upright or inverted) and magnification of the image.
b. Use a ray diagram to determine the location, orientation and magnification
of the image. [Remember to show the image on the diagram.]

3. A lens with a focal length of magnitude 3m is to be used to project an image on a

screen that is 15m from the object. The image is to be larger than the object.
a. Determine what kind of lens to use.
b. Determine where to locate the lens.
c. Determine the magnification.

4. A lens is to made using a “blank” that has a first surface with a radius of
curvature 20cm and an index of refraction of 1.40. Determine the radius of
curvature for the second surface if the needed focal length is 15cm.

5. A pair of lenses is used to project an image on a screen as illustrated.

The initial converging lens has a focal length of 1m.

Homework 22

a. Determine where the image would be located if the additional lens were
not included.
b. Determine the focal length for the additional lens in order to project the
image on the screen as illustrated.
